We were talking to some Atletico fans

We were in the Plaza Mayor on Wednesday just before the trouble started. We could see that things were going to turn bad as the City fans were starting to throw beer and cans and knowing what the Police are like it was no shock what happened soon after. We were later talking some Atletico fans (who were all great by the way, very friendly) and they told us that the Police are all Real Madrid fans and have a history that dates back to Franco and the fascist regime. They hate Atletico and do anything to show them in a bad light.

Heh! Some of the worst ultra fascist fans in Spain are Atletico fans (plenty of decent fans too). Best not to start a feud with them, they have history of killing rival fans.

Real Madrid were regarded by some as Franco's team, so there is a facist association there, although the degree of any involvement is still debated.

In this country we mainly think of facism in Europe as being defeated in 1945, but countries like Spain and Greece have not been democratic fairly recently. I think Franco died in the mid-70's, and the Colonels military junta fell in Greece at about the same time.

Just as a by the way......

 

Article 50 (Brexit and all that nonsense) was drafted in case Spain/Greece/Portugal or any others had a coup and ended up with military government. Part of the reason Turkey will never be a member is that they are always a "are you looking at me, sunshine?" away from the military taking over (again)

Yep, Franco finally died in 1975. The Greek colonels fell in 1974, and the fascist regime in Portugal went the same way. (There were serious fascist plotsto restore some sort of dictatorship in Italy into  the early 190s)
