China smashes the stable fusion reaction record. Going from 403 seconds (6 mins 43 secs) up to 1066 seconds (17 min 46 secs).

Thanks for sharing. It's incredible the speed at which Chinese scientific research and projects are progressing.

Remarkable stuff!

The Chinese must think the current scientific policy situation in the US is manna from heaven for them.

I’ve witnessed this happening just in my lifetime. I keep banging on about flea sprays, pesticides and herbicides in gardens, creating small areas of suitable habitat and generally being more tolerant of small things, even if they scare you (grow up). I recognise that climate change is a major factor in their decline but helping things survive now might mean they’re not extinct by the time we address it (although there’s a big if in there).

Senior officials at the US Department of Veterans Affairs have ordered that VA physicians and scientists not publish in medical journals or speak with the public without first seeking clearance from political appointees of Donald Trump, the Guardian has learned.

The Chinese are having the role of world science research leader handed to them pretty much by default.

They must be absolutely pissing themselves laughing.

I’ve just watched a documentary, one of many I’ve viewed and there’s so many subtle  and not so subtle many instances that are so reminiscent of the rise of the Nazis.
Not suggesting we’re heading the same way but the methods are there.

Yep. Very sad to see my beloved nation become entranced by literal fascists.

Sorry if this has been referenced already

just incredible

London-based artificial intelligence company Builder.ai has gone bankrupt after revelations that its flagship AI tool, "Natasha," was powered not by cutting-edge machine learning, but by a human workforce of over 700 engineers based in India.

Once valued at USD1.5 billion and bolstered by a USD455 million investment from Microsoft, Builder.ai marketed Natasha as a revolutionary tool that could autonomously design and build mobile applications.

But internal reports and whistleblower accounts revealed that most of the labor was performed manually, with minimal automation involved.

The company filed for bankruptcy in May 2025, stating on LinkedIn that it was "entering into insolvency proceedings" after being unable to recover from "historic challenges and past decisions."

Investigations also uncovered financial irregularities involving another tech firm, VerSe Innovation, an Indian social media startup that collaborated with Builder.ai, between 2021 and 2024, to allegedly inflate their revenues by billing each other for unrendered services, a charge VerSe denies.

At this point I think a fusion reactor that can power homes is finally possible within the next 10 years.

Ultimate game changer

wonder if the energy companies and the fossil fuel countries are actively trying to stop this from coming to fruition.

(like the light bulb manufacturers were rumoured to have stopped development of long life bulbs for many years)

Builders will be required to fit solar panels to the "vast majority" of new build homes in England under changes to be published this year, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband has said.

The regulations will require developers to add panels unless the buildings fall under certain exemptions such as being covered by shade.

Speaking to the BBC, Miliband said the move was "just common sense" adding that solar panels would save the typical household £500 a year on their energy bills.

Sensible in principle, though I'm sure the building industry will squawk about it.

The row between Donald Trump and Elon Musk over a major spending bill has exacerbated uncertainty over the future of Nasa's budget, which is facing deep cuts.

The space agency has published its budget request to Congress, which would see funding for science projects cut by nearly a half.

Forty science missions, which are in development or in space already, are in line to be stood down.

... what was that I said about one of the rare positives of this administration being support for spaceflight programs? Now, there may not even be that.

Bit of a nonsense really, passing the buck. Government should take control and fit it to all possible civic buildings first.

I reckon doing both would be good.

We shouldn't be spending money on going into space when we need to sort out our own planet.

Having said that, the money saved by these cuts most certainly won't be spent on improving the environment.

At the very least, robotic Earth observation programs are a key part of helping sort out our own planet - they cover an area impossible to observe by other means.

Additionally, at some point space based tech, whether resource gathering, life support or otherwise, is going to be needed to help with problems on Earth anyway.

And yes, the last paragraph is sadly true here too - the money would go towards intimidating and sometimes flat out harming brown children anyway, it certainly wouldn't go where it's needed.

The UK making moves to begin building its first fission plant in over 30 years.

Should have been doing it a rather long time ago, but now will have to do. I'm hoping those against the idea have their own alternative that won't result in a much bigger cost in money and lives in the near future?

Can I be a pedant and say that honour goes to Hinckley Point C?

Glad it's being build, but also ridiculous they never built this at the same time as Sizewell B.
