JWST launch put back again.

Not sure that launching it when there will be an elderly Scandinavian riding around the sky on a magic sleigh is safe, but I'm sure they know what they are doing.

Does anyone have sufficient understanding of the Alcubierre drive to be able to explain it to me in layman's terms?

I'll give it a go.

So basically you are trying to warp space. So imagine the space you are you are travelling along is a vast rubber sheet. When the Alcubierre drive kicks in, the sheet directly behind you gets stretched at crazy speeds away from you , so anything that was directly behind you flies away from you with it.

The same happens in front of you but this time the sheet shrinks really quickly. Meaning something that was far in front of you is now very close to you.

So the things behind you get stretched away from you, and the things in front of you shrink towards you, letting you travel between two points at incredible speeds.

The rubber sheet is the imaginary fabric of space-time that you travel through. You can't travel along the sheet faster than the speed of light, but if the sheet stretches then you can almost stand still and go at speeds faster than the speed of light relative to the things around you

Unfortunately I think it requires too much energy to make work. Maybe a few thousand years in the future when we've figured out how to harness dark energy we'll be able to do it.

Thanks for that, Bear.

Is this what Star Trek's warp drive is based on, or is that something different?

Yep that's pretty much the same deal. He based it on the warp drive in the show.

More on that merry mess. You know, this would all go a lot easier if both governments and private entities alike actually started communicating with each other in an open and honest fashion and treated space as the global commons that it is.

"Space is just extremely enormous, and satellites are very tiny," Mr Musk said in the interview

Can’t stand this narcissistic cvnt

Well, tbh it's like Brendan telling us that we score lots of goals: it's *technically* true but tells barely a fraction of the whole story.

Regarding Musk in general, my opinion remains that I can tolerate the personal flaws so long as the company he commands continues to do work vital to our survival as a species. "Tolerate" being the operative word there.

I notice he didn't actually deny the Chinese claim of them having to shift theirs out of the way to avoid a collision.

To be honest, I'm thinking that's because it has to be true.

Criminally irresponsible, but then governments have a rep some similar acts of irresponsibility in such matters too - ASAT launches resulting in debris where we really don't want it etc.

While humanity is busy duking it out with Josh Warrington (Covid), prime Mike Tyson has stepped into the ring, and it won't be long before he's finished his warm up.

You just know that when this catstrophic issue doies finally get the attention it requires, plenty will still claim ignorance and lack of warning!

... or claim that either it isn't happening at all or isn't happening much because it isn't affecting them personally.

Up until the point where it *does* and it's way too late.

Honestly, as I mentioned in the Covid thread, the response to that has really shook me on terms of confidence regarding humanity actually being able to deal with such future crises.

Or probably blame the media for being too 'sanctimonious' and making them not want to care or something similarly vacant.
