I drive the missus to work in Thurmaston, and the route I take is via Gartree Rd, Shady Lane, Goodwood Rd, Colchester Rd, Hungarton Boulevard.

20 mins, tops.

Yes, you can go via Goodwood Road, that's true. I'd be surprised if it's much quicker.

So because a few motorists get held up for a bit near the hobby horse roundabout the landscape of a good chunk of east & south Leicestershire & it's villages will be ripped into.

Joni Mitchell got it right.

In 1995, there were 21 million cars on UK roads. In 2015, there were 31 million. It's only going to keep on increasing. Our road networks weren't designed for this volume of traffic and can't accommodate infinite increases in use.

It's easy to say 'a few getting held up at hobby horse' but when it's your daily commute and you're met with stationary traffic on the M1 near J21 coming home almost every bloody day, it gets a tad irritating.

It's not ideal to lose swathes of countryside, but what else would you seriously suggest?

For those that don't enjoy commuting in the motor.

Get the bus

Get the train

Get a job nearer home

Move nearer to your work

Adding another junction to the M1 sounds a great idea. Fosse Park is apparently one of the worst in the country at rush hour and the drive between j21 to 20 seems to go on forever.

Yeah it'll be great for the first few years, then it will just become another place of common congestion.

Many could do that, yes. Many could cycle too. However for the majority of people it just isn't practical to travel to work by any means other than car unfortunately.

I think it's refreshing to hear of a big government infrastructure project that would actually benefit the reason for once.. not just London or those commuting to London.

Leicester City Council would never have raised this unless they thought they were going to get a hearing from Westminster and that there might be some money for it. Is this the same government which recently canned Midland Main Line electrification, but is going ahead with Crossrail 2 and HS2?

The trains on the Midland Main Line are already nearly 40 years old, are they going to have to carry on until they reach heritage line status?

Come to think of it, Leicester is one of the biggest cities to have no light rail transport system. A tramway down the old Great Central past Fosse Park and on to Narborough would surely go a fair way to relieving congestion in that area.

Plus, much of that traffic coming off at 21 is heading to the east of the county and forms a large part of the logjams along the Soar Valley Way A453 toward Oadby A6 and the A47 Thurnby.

Or the Ivanhoe/National Forest line.

Good point, well populated area with an indifferent road network and no train service. If that goes ahead you'll be lucky to get a few old Pacers pensioned off from Yorkshire to run on it. Those horrible late 1970s efforts cobbled together from old Leyland National buses, which I thought must have disappeared decades ago, until I worked in South Yorkshire last year.

There's a plan to move Leicester Forest East Services miles down the M1

It's straddled the M1 in all its concrete glory since 1966 but LFE services could be on the move.

As part of plans to upgrade the M1 through Leicestershire the pit-stop for hungry and weary travellers could be shifted a few miles to the south to a new motorway junction - 20a.

Highways bosses have devised an £86 million plan to open the new junction where the M1 is crossed by the A426 south of Whetstone.

While the primary aim of the new junction would be to link the M1 with the planned Leicester Eastern by-pass and relieve congestion at the busy Junction 21 near Fosse Park, county council leader Nick Rushton says it has been earmarked as a new home for the re-located LFE complex.

That would remove the restriction currently preventing the M1 at Leicester Forest East being widened to create a 'Smart Motorway'.

Smart motorways schemes have been installed on busy parts of the M6 already, with the hard shoulder being converted into an active lane during busy periods.

Refuges will be built meaning cars that break down will be able to find safety, even when all four lanes are running.

LFE services was built to an Italian design when the motorway reached only as far as Markfield.

It was considered a fashionable destination for diners offering silver service dining.

Now however it a more hum-drum stop off point for motorists and convenient rendez-vous for away fans heading to King Power.

Yes but the best bit for all this new road malarkey is that it will help when the 150,000 new homes are built ...    WOW !   :o

We need to expand the stadium asap for all the new fans !!!
