Plans being drawn up for Leicester Eastern bypass

Recommended Posts

The major new road would loop from Syston to the M1 and relieve pressure on the clogged A46

Plans are being drawn up for an Eastern bypass for Leicester to ease pressure on the traffic-choked A46.

Although a fixed route is yet to be decided, it would run from the A46 at Syston, loop around the east and south of the city and join the M1 at a new junction at roughly the midway point between existing Junction 20, at Lutterworth, and the “very congested” Junction 21, at Fosse Park.

The road would potentially cross the A47 somewhere on one side or the other of Houghton on the Hill and the A6 to the south of Oadby.

The project is being drawn up by Leicestershire County Council, the city council and officers at Midlands Connect, a partnership of councils and Government bodies set up to deliver major transport improvements across the region.

Planners have set out an approximate direction for the Leicester's Eastern Bypass but not a detailed route

City council transport director Stuart Maxwell said the scheme would require significant funding from the government, and from developers, which would build housing around it.

He said: “It is a new proposal to go around the south and east of the city.

“One of the reasons for promoting that, apart from the development opportunities in terms of housing, is that it would actually offer relief to the northern part of the A46.

“We are faced with challenges around the north side of Leicester.

“The A46 is already congested at peak times and this opportunity offers relief in that area.

“It also links to the unlocking of housing opportunities and the potential that this can be brought forward with significant funding from developers and from central government.

“It’s in its very early stage, and links with a plan that stretches from the M5 in Gloucestershire all the way through to the East Coast. It’s on that sort of scale.”

Mr Maxwell added: “Compared to other cities, Leicester is in quite a difficult position because the M1 and roads like the A46 come so close to the city in comparison to Nottingham where you have a lot of road to travel before you get into major urban areas.

“It’s (the Eastern bypass) very high on our list of priorities.”

The cost of the Eastern Bypass scheme has not yet been calculated, but it is likely to be in the tens of millions of pounds. Great Glen’s bypass is 3.5 miles long and cost £12 million when it was built in 2002.

City mayor Sir Peter Soulsby, who is chairman of East Midlands Council Transport Group, said: “The Eastern Bypass is a very welcome proposal. It will be an important piece of national infrastructure.

“It will relieve pressure on the A46 to the north of the city but it will also provide a new junction on the M1 on what I am told is the longest stretch of the motorway without one. That will relieve the pressure on the on Junction 21 which is very congested.”

Sir Peter said detailed plans would be developed over the next 18 months.

Any final proposals would need both Government approval and funding.

Sir Peter added: “We are some way off but I would say this is a project for the next decade.”

Is it my imagination but wasnt the A46 intended to be a bypass back in the day?

Quite sure eventually we wont have cities, towns and villages and just all live in one morphed place with no identity or soul.

Looking at that plan it seems to follow, might be an upgrade of, the back roads from Syston to Houghton on the Hill and that area. They are pretty crap roads in the most part. The land surrounding the new roads will be redesignated as development land, so lots of new houses.

Yes it was called the Leicester Western Bypass when it was being developed and Built lol

That idea is mental, looks like it will take 3 times as long to get to the same point, even without traffic, and that's a lot of green being ruined.

This is good for me really as it means everything is an easy drive from where I live. The Western Bypass has improved things massively, now another new road in the opposite direction will help no end. By the time it's built though I probably won't be far off retired.

If the council had invested properly in the inner ring road (A453) and made it all, as was originally intended, dual carriageway, then there'd be no need for this bypass carving up the green belt.

If you travel the circuit of the A453 you'll see that there's a lot of spare space either side of the single carriageway stretches. This was land set aside to accommodate a dual carriageway but it never got built and look at it now, one of the worst roads for congestion in Leicester.

I'm willing to bet it won't be built in your working lifetime, Webbo.

There will be massive resistance to it.

As somebody who lives in Enderby and commutes to Glenfield every day, this is a very welcome idea. The M1 southbound approaching J21 is horrendous most days coming home.

Also, as a millennial property renter, more housing is always good news.

That being said I doubt I'd be too pleased if I lived in nearby villages...

I'll have to work until I'm 90 if the tories stay in power!

I believe this first got mentioned a few years back with the plans being that the start of the new bypass went through the school playing fields at Roundhill to join with the existing duel carriageway. I assume a new playing field would then be built around the back if there's room with the football pitches by Asda?

No idea if this is a continuation of those plans or something different though?

You're right but

The project is being drawn up by Leicestershire County Council, the city council and officers at Midlands Connect.

I would have thought there would be funds from central government for this too.
