Price of Football 2017: Young adult fans are 'put off' by cost of football

Just over £1,100 a season it costs me ! Just season tickets alone! I am beginning to feel there is better money spent elsewhere! I hate to think this way but financially it’s becomming a burden!

Now there's just me and I take the interest free DD option and it's £33 a month, I can't complain as I get two home games a month for that, close season exempt obviously.

The PL clubs problem is that they are paying the best player wages in the world due to the FFP rules they have to get as much revenue as they can.

It's a rip off.

Fortunately I've been a STH for so long I don't ever need to buy single home tickets but I look at prices and it's ridiculous. I think Palace home tickets are £40 for a seat in SK2 which is where I sit. Wtf.

Clubs at this level make so much money, I imagine ticket sales contribute very little to their profit. It'll not change because we get strong attendances but anything more than £30 isn't right.

I'm glad I only have to pay £30 for away tickets but they should be brought down to £20 now.

Ticket prices should be cheaper and I'm not defending the clubs or the PL but I find it a little odd when people (Not singling you out, I mean generally) who have season tickets and go to loads of away games complain about the price as if they don't have a choice.

By paying the club hundreds of pounds for season tickets year on year on year and going to 10-15 games a season, you are telling them that you accept their prices.

If it's really that expensive and you disagree with the pricing that much then don't go. Be active in trying to reduce prices, not complicit in their increase.

I know it's not ideal, but it isn't like you need to go to the game to live. I'm not understating the importance of football in peoples lives, but it is a choice to go and it is a choice to pay.

If enough people stopped going to games and started make enough noise, prices would come down (£30 away game cap.)

Why are prices supposed to be fair?

Football is a business. If anything full grounds show that the tickets are too cheap.

If they are too expensive don't buy them and supply and demand will reduce the prices in a capitalist market.

My only concern is for the future of live football. If youngsters don't go to matches then there is more liklihood they won't go later in life. Hopefully they'll have developed a less expensive hobby. Maybe we'll see a move away from live football in the future and it'll become a TV sport with people paid to go and watch.

I think season tickets are reasonably priced.

Food and drink prices are irrelevant.

The young are being priced out not because ticket prices are high, but because the "economically competent" Tory government have presided over the longest and deepest spell of falling wages in modern British history, people are having to make sacrifices and entertainment is the first thing that they cut back on.

I would support a move towards a model of more televised (or more likely online streamed) games and lower ticket prices.

Three are two snags....  young adults are not prepared to commit to 19 home games per season and so don't want to commit to the payment;  the waiting list for STs means that they will be retried before they get an ST!

ON a pay [per game basis I am sure  tickets are value for money and compare well with say theatre tickets...  this research is too simplistic... I don't believe it's just a money thing.

But... this is a big problem for the club.  I bet the majority of STs are over 60 (no evidence of this other than looking the folk I sit with - any figures from the club??).  My son (14) has an ST coz I sorted it when we were in the championship... but his mates at school have no chance of getting a ticket to see city in the prem... so how is the club going to nurture the adult fan base of paying customer in 10 years time (when the current STs are shuffling off)?

Our match day prices in my opinion are a joke. Season tickets although not cheap do represent much better value. Personally stuck in a trap of financially going to have to cut back on the games I do in the future but the match day prices the club charge is for me at an unjustifiable amount.

I really don't think that £35 per ticket for working class people is acceptable

And here's the nub of it - they'd like to squeeze the working class out of it. In much the same way that politicians want the working class vote, but guess who they will shaft first of all?

Hmm. Boycotts only work if others are on board with you. As someone else pointed out, demand in this country is high and if you stay away someone else will just snap up your ticket.

The FSF getting away tickets capped at £30 shows fans can get results with good, pressurised and organised campaigning. There needs to be more of that.

Know the feeling, that’s what I pay, and every season I think it’s my last, but then the  summer break is so boring without football, don’t think I could give it up, as I love the feeling of the going.

Ticket prices should be lower. As said the example of a ticket in the kop at home to likes of Palace and Wba being best part of forty quid is just obscene.

What does really bother me is the amount of people who buy all the food and other over priced shite at games. Every home game you see people leaving seats from 35 mins onwards to rush to the kiosks to get their burgers and other food stuff for whatever rip off price it is.

Just absolutely stupid. People either have more money than sense or just like wasting money.

Programmes aren't needed either. I haven't bothered with programmes for years except the odd real special game.

Absolutely agree regarding food. I'll never understand people missing 20+ mins of a game in ques for food. Bonkers.

But I always buy a programme, I read them on my train journey home and then put them away as a little momento. Not bad for £3.50 imo.

I think the prices are unbelievably out of hand, and clearly something needs to be done. TV money accounts for the vast majority of PL profits, they could let us all in for free if they wanted and still make extravagant profits! To compare the football to theatre/gigs etc is not really fair. The vast majority of the revenue from these activities comes from ticket sales. Not the case with PL football.

I don't quite understand the 'football is a business so charge what you want whilst grounds are full' point. Yeh, sure, they're full now, but what about when all the 40/50s aged folk in the crowd are no longer around? You've disenfranchised the youth who will be too busy playing esports to go to the game. Any self-respecting and sustainable business has a long-term vision, and would realise that the sky money will not last forever. When that all ends, the profits needs to come from somewhere, i.e people going to games.

Secondly, if it is all about business, why do we get scarves at Stoke, bacon rolls at Newcastle, beers at Xmas? You have our custom, no need to chip into profits to make small gestures like this.

Thirdly, if you're buying factory food at grounds and then complaining about price, you deserve all you get

What difference does lowering the price now make if grounds are full? It won't change the fact that young people can't get in will it? The only way to do that is to build bigger and bigger stadiums (which is a problem on its own).

Beside, the youth of today are getting used to a streaming world where they can watch any sport and any event online, live. They chose football before because there wasn't much in the way of other sports to watch and the TV coverage was a match a week (only highlights and not live). The days of young people queuing up to watch football every week (other than possibly "Glamour" ties) is an idea of the past. If the TV money stops (which it won't though it may reduce) then a new Euroleague will be created and the national leagues will become paupers and feeder clubs.

We get scarves and beer because the owners want us to like them.

That's not the point though is it, the study says kids are put off from going because of price and have stopped going because of price. Nowhere does it say they can't go because grounds are full. It's literally all about price. How do they know grounds are full if they look at ticket prices and immediately give up the thought of going.

Grounds aren't gonna be full and TV money won't keep flowing forever, to think otherwise would be similar to thinking buying a house in rural America in 2007 is a sure thing. When it all goes pop you'll need younger people back.

And as I already said why would young people want to go and watch football when they can watch any sport they want or any event they want for free from their own bedroom? And if they wanted to watch something live why choose football over the plethora of other sports now available locally without even talking of the other possibilities like the cinema or theatre?

Price could be a reason but if the TV money stops  - which it won't, it'll reduce at worst as companies will pay to stream games to Asia, Africa, the US and Europe etc... - it's quality of entertainment that'll get young people into football grounds and I'm afraid the western world has moved on. Most young people don't want to spend every saturday (sunday or monday) afternoon ( or evening) going to a football ground to watch 22 guys play out a 0-0 draw anymore. That's why the football public is getting older not because a 21 year old would rather buy a few shots at a nightclub than spend £30 on a match ticket.
