Yeah agree with most of that. London is a hard one because it's SO much bigger than everywhere else. Whilst London has lots of great pub buildings, a lot of them are chain run and a bit rubbish. There's also lots of areas where there aren't many great pubs and it feels cask light compared to cities further north IMO.

Haven't done Bristol, Norwich and Hull properly.

Nottingham is annoyingly good. Even the suburbs are good, particularly Beeston and West Bridgford.

It would be interesting to delve into villages and see what the best pub villages are in the UK. How would the likes of Barrow and Mountsorrel compare to others...

Good point on the villages, not something I’ve ever really considered.

My initial thought is somewhere affluent and historical in the South East but then a trendy village not far from a big northern city might be more cutting edge.

Rehill’s in Jesmond is the best off license/bottle shop I’ve ever been to. So much breadth and depth.

Sheffield is great but the centre isn't that strong. Suburbs are cracking though.

Depends on what you like. My city pub rating is some combo of volume, beer selection, interior, atmosphere, price, pub proximity, city attractiveness, stumble-ability

Best in class per city size imo:

London

Sheffield, Bristol, Liverpool

Edinburgh, Nottingham, Norwich, Hull

York

Haven't been to Glasgow or Belfast so can't comment on those.

I'd rate Preston and Derby quite highly for places of their size and relative attractiveness (or lack of, I should say) to destination drinkers. Both underrated unless you're really ITK.

Cambridge suburbs are excellent for pubs - even the Greene King ones are good - but the centre lets it down.

Derby is surprisingly very good. I wanna do another trip and try the desi pubs @Chris_OGrady suggested

Bottle of Blue Fox by Charnwood Brewery absolutely hit the spot last night.

If you can ever get it on cask then do, many times over.

Not load of pubs in Edinburgh over the weekend.

Canny Man is well regarded but I thought it was good without being great. Similar vibe to say French House in London. Half of a pub, half of a restaurant.

The Blackbird - really good early evening type bar. Reminded me a lot of Orange Tree back in the day.

The Belfry - yeah good little modern pub this.

Good area though Tollcross and Brunsfield

Glasgow was an absolute treat at the weekend. A summary:

The Pot Still - Brilliant pub more famed for its whisky selection but had some nice ales on tap too. Didn't dig into it but their Bavarian beer selection was up there as well.

The Horse Shoe - As a local at the bar told me, an iconic Glasgow pub. More worth a visit for the architecture than beer but did a nice pint of West's St Mungo Lager.

Shilling Brewing Co - Big gaff in what I thought was a converted bank, but with a micropub feel. Was absolutely rammed on a Friday night just with normal folk on a night out, rather than beer hipsters or old men. Great to see.

Inn Deep - Cool pub in converted railway arches on the bank of the River Kelvin in the trendy West End. Assume it's run by Williams Brothers given the number of their beers available. Had a nice Czech Pilsner.

Bon Accord - Another cosy ale and whisky type boozer on the edge of the city centre. Could gladly have spent the whole afternoon in there if their card machine hadn't been broken. Had a Brass Castle Bad Kitty porter which was a very ideal cold, winter Sunday pint.

The Griffin - A corner pub near the Bon Accord with great architecture and loads of Skye ales. Tried some of their bottles during lockdown so was nice to finally have a pint of their stuff in a pub.

Will be back. Never been so gutted to leave a new city knowing how fvcking far away I live from it.

Does this still stand for Glasgow, and does anyone have any other tips pls?

Three Judges and State Bar are also good. I like Tennents on Byers Road just because I met Mark McGhee and Neil Lennon there.

The Fox (obviously)

Waggon and Horses

The Volunteer Arms

The Black Horse

The Slip Inn *
The Swan

The Snickleway Inn

The Golden Ball

The Hop

The Phoenix

* = Televised Football shown

Big fan of all of those. Best city for pubs in the UK IMO alongside Sheffield. If you like Ale anyway. If you’re a lager drinker then I guess anywhere is decent.

The Blue Bell is very popular although I don’t like the landlord or its cliquey/snooty vibe. It’s a tiny pub but very historic.

I don't think there's one absolutely "must go to" venue, there's just a proliferation of good pubs and it's hard to go wrong there! Very good cask and kegs options nearly everywhere. If I was with my Mrs, I'd deffo try and go to the House of Trembling Madness Stonegate- great view overlooking the cathedral, if you can find a spot!

If traveling by rail, give yourself time for York Tap, in the station. Must have had nearly 40 taps, half cask and half draught. Spent hours there on our last visit, and brought food with us.

My post was still accurate as of six months later. Wish I could say I've managed to go since!

Haven't been for a few years and I heard the cask selection is not quite as good as it used to be, but it's a beautiful old bar.
