thinking about it i’d probably rather just let the rats take over most the house than actively go out and get a cat. horrible creatures.

Yeah, get a Jack Russell. Great at catching rats and worth keeping after.

Years ago I used to keep chickens, we got rats interested the coop. I poured a Jerry can full of petrol down the hole I found and dropped a match down, no more rats. My little brother watched me do it and tried himself and near burnt his face off. Not how I would suggest doing it but it was very effective.

Go for the extra strong poison ...   can't remember what mine is called but they are blue bait blocks ...   soon zapped the little critters and safe for chickens and dogs ...

I am always concerned with the knock on effect of poison. Is this type safe for the animals that eat the

carrion?

If so I need some!

Rat trap from Wilkos. Don't put your finger in it because it'll take it right off - they are a lot more powerful than mouse traps.

Or, find the hole where they are getting in and wedge a window cleaner in it to stop them ...

There are some strong ones that are rat specific and I can vouch for them ...   I put mine in the chicken coop under a tyre propped up with 4 bits of wood, leaving a small gap for the rats to get under with a piece of wood on top weighed down with a brick.  Took care of the rats so I left it there ...   looked like a nice little feature actually ! ...  but eventually the chickens dug out a bigger hole and got their beaks in and eat the lot ...   all survived !    As for carrion..   as someone said they die underground so no problem.   I’m away at the moment but will check the name of it when I get back if you need some.

Run a short length of drainpipe through where they are getting in. Then charge local kids a pound to stand at one end of the drain pipe, every time a rat drops through they get three goes to try and splat them, if they succeed you can give them a free bag of sweets. I've seen this work somwhere but can't think where now.

Heard one in the roof the other month. Luckily I have traps up there and I thought one of them had caught him.

Popped in the roof, and there he was, trapped but still alive, sort of half a job.

It was a about 11pm so thought I would deal with it in the morning.

Next day about lunchtime popped up there, still moving, still trapped but still alive
