there was something well weird going on with that ref last night, he got an awful lot of things wrong. the penalty was a joke, the fact he didn’t VAR it was a bigger joke. there were a number of yellow cards for basically nothing that were followed up with obvious yellow card offences not even being given as fouls etc. properly strange.

I found it rather strange that Serbia pretty much stopped playing football as well as ceasing to attack after Xhaka‘s equalizer. Didn‘t see too much of them following the wrestling incident involving Mitrovic, Schär and Lichtsteiner. One or two headers going over, but shots on goal?

A draw would‘ve been the fairer result, but you don‘t leave Shaqiri the space and Tadic, albeit being quick on his feet, just isn‘t a defender.

That penalty decision has potentially cost Serbia their place in this tournament.

Yeah, but you can say that about quite a few of the (non-)decisions so far. Ultimately, their suicidal defending and poor second half will have meant even more should they exit.

They just didn't turn up, to the Swiss' credit. Xhaka got so much time and space for his goal and what on Earth were Serbia thinking pushing everyone up to the half way line in the last minute? How bloody daft is that? They would've been in the driving seat with a draw.

What's the sentiment amongst normal people in Switzerland, and how do you feel personally, about Xhaka and Shaqiri and their celebrations?

While I'm sympathetic to their cause and the cause of Kosovan independence, I think I'd be annoyed personally if I was Swiss.

Wales have a few players that we all know are English. King, Williams, etc, they're probably all sat at home watching England at the World Cup and they probably all grew up supporting England. We know that. But we still don't expect to see them publicly supporting England and considering themselves English, celebrating England wins etc.

To see Shaqiri using a Switzerland game to celebrate his Kosovan identity, especially given he refused to switch to Kosovo, felt really awkward. I don't think I'd like it if I was Swiss.

I'd like to think, if I was Swiss, I'd have been understanding and appreciative if Xhaka made, Shaqiri and all the others "switched" to Kosovo when they had the chance. I'd like to think I'd have wished them well and understood why.

But if you agree to stay, stay because you consider yourself Swiss not just because Switzerland have more chance of getting to the world Cup ffs. That's cheap.

I can only speak for myself. I find it annoying. It took a larger chunk out of the joy, celebrating an important last-minute group stage win.

It felt out of place. Unnecessary.

We've known for months that we'd play against Serbia. The players knew what to expect, they could foresee Russian support for the Serbian brothers. They could've prepared more professionally, just shrugging it all off. They could've celebrated in a more dignified manner. Did they fvck.

Xhaka and Shaqiri tend to show off, in the case of Shaqiri, it's more down to his simplistic personality, which is a bit more gullible, with Xhaka, it's arrogance and stupidity. Granit's brother Taulant was at the forefront during the highly controversial Albania - Serbia match (remember the drone?), it's in the family.

Kosovar nationalism is rooted in history and for me, has no place in the 21st century. Four years ago, there was a similar discussion surrounding the celebrations with the double eagle, with players promising not to do it again when playing for the national team. There's even a direct quote from Shaqiri...

Did they learn? Well, fvck me if they did.

A football pitch is no stage for politics, especially not nationalism. Needless to say, their actions haven't led to more endearment from my side.

My Serbian mate is extremely pissed off about it. I'm going to relay this post to him, think it might make him feel better

Xhaka and Shaqiri to face potential FIFA charges following yesterday's double eagle celebrations:

Could be banned for up to two matches.

Great stuff, you two dumbbells! :appl:

Sorry MC as I know you are Swiss but they would deserve it and its so stupid.

As mentioned earlier in the thread by you and Finnegan, it's ****ing disrespectful of those two against Switzerland, they are Swiss and play for Switzerland and they should remember this as opposed to what they are trying to celebrate.

On a lesser scale, its a bit like Danny Simpson scoring for us against Liverpool and displaying an Man U vest under his shirt after scoring in front of the Liverpool fans.

So, Xhaka and Shaqiri get off with a fine of 10'000 Swiss Francs (£7'500) each, Lichtsteiner must pay 5'000 Swiss Francs (£3'750) - all due to "unsportsmanlike conduct".

Meanwhile, the Serbian Football Association is handed a fine in the amount of 54'000 Swiss Francs (£40'000), this because of the tasteless banners held and Mladic tees worn by Serbian football fans. President Kokeza and team manager Krstajic will have to dish out 5'000 Swiss Francs also for their behaviour and comments post-match.

I assume you won't be contributing to this.

Didn't know Lichtsteiner also had Kosovo-Albanian blood

I've read about it this morning in a Swiss newspaper. The campaign was started by an Albanian living in NY - crazy, eh? No direct affiliation with Switzerland... but of course, he feels with his "brothers"...

Silly idea. Do these people think before they act?

The fines won't hurt the players at all, it's peanuts to them. Why trying to collect money for people who already have tons of it in the first place? lol

My hope is that they'll donate the money gathered to a good cause that helps people in Albania or Kosovo.
