Beware of Coronavirus-related scams, too.

DWP scam warning - Thursday, 4 June, 2020
Action Fraud are continuing to see examples of emails and texts sent by fraudsters purporting to be from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

The DWP will never text or email asking for your personal information or bank details.
Do not click on the links or attachments in suspicious emails and never respond to unsolicited messages and calls that ask for personal or financial details.

If you are expecting a call from the DWP on your online benefit application, DWP work coaches will leave you a message in your online journal to let you know.

NHS Test and Trace guidance - Monday, 1 June, 2020
Unfortunately, criminals will exploit every opportunity they can to defraud innocent people of their money, or steal their personal details.

It is important to remember that NHS Test and Trace will never ask you for any form of payment or any passwords or PINs. They will also never ask you to download anything, ask any details about your bank account or send someone to your home.

Whilst it is possible for criminals to spoof official phone numbers, they cannot fake official website addresses. We would encourage anyone with concerns about a phone call, text message or email they have received, in relation to Test and Trace, to check the website address being provided to you carefully. If possible, type the official address, which will be

https://contact-tracing.phe.gov.uk

followed by unique characters given to you, directly into your browser.

Test and Tracer callers will NEVER

  • ask you to dial a premium rate number to speak to us (for example, those starting 09 or 087)
  • ask you to make any form of payment or purchase a product or any kind
  • ask for any details about your bank account
  • ask for your social media identities or login details, or those of your contacts
  • ask you for any passwords or PINs, or ask you to set up any passwords or PINs over the phone
  • disclose any of your personal or medical information to your contacts
  • provide medical advice on the treatment of any potential coronavirus symptoms
  • ask you to download any software to your PC or ask you to hand over control of your PC, smartphone or tablet to anyone else

Also, if you get an email saying “ congratulations! you have won two free season tickets to watch Nottingham Forest!” DO NOT open the email. It contains two free season tickets to watch Nottingham Forest.

I had a London number call me up the other day reckoning they were HMRC and if I didn’t comply and give them all the details needed a warrant would be issued for my arrest.

I asked how they would arrest me when they were ringing me and were requesting my name, address, national insurance number and of course requesting a payment...

Had something similar on monday or tuesday. HMRC requesting payment as I havent been paying enough tax and wanted a payment for £750.

For a start my tax is paid from my employee as im not self employed. Then they asked for my address so i said if your HMRC then you would have my address. The line went silent i laughed and put the phone down.

tbh I enjoy those kind of phone calls.  Sometimes I get them from people saying that my computer has a virus and wanting to get remote access.  As if there is some kind of worldwide virus police force working to cleanse people's computers out of the goodness of their hearts.  lol

I tend to start off by playing dumb and going along with it.  I'll ask them to hold while I start up the computer and leave them hanging for a while.  Then I will start asking them questions like how do you know? what OS do I use? who do you work for? what's in it for you? etc, I might pretend the computer has crashed and needs restarting to delay them more, there might also be a pretend knock on the door that I have to attend to.

In the end, when it becomes apparent that we both know that the guy is a scammer and his cover is blown I will ask him how he sleeps and possibly chuck in some of the most creative abuse I can muster.

These people really are the scum of the earth.  The way I look at it, the more of their time I can waste, the less time it leaves for them to scam others and hopefully pisses them off as much as possible.

I too go along with the charade and play dumb, the best ones where i can keep them on the phone for ages is, when they ask for bank details, account number etc and i give them fake details. At that point they get someone more qualified to handle my call and i can really string it out.

Apparently they started with a recorded message but then turned to direct calls... what surprised me is that it wasn’t an unknown number it was an actual London based land line. Brazen!
