I describe myself as better than ‘get by’ in French…. I have Swiss French family and my Mum lives there.  I also went to University in Limoges for 6 months in my early twenties

I even managed to interview French customers in Paris using my French last March and got COVID for my troubles!

Language needs to be kept alive…. Practice whenever you can and don’t be afraid to make mistakes…. Just get yourself understood…. You get so much more out of your visit to a country if you make an effort

You sure about that?

Do they not use "ser" to describe roles in life?

"Yo no soy marinero, soy capitan" (in the song La Bamba).

:dunno:

I stand to be corrected.  My Spanish is fairly rusty.

You're probably more qualified to know than me but I was taught that Ser was for permenant conditions like nationality and Estar was for temporary conditions like jobs. Again I'm sure you know better than me, Im only got grade 2 GCSE.

Is French taught in school in Algeria? Obviously with its history I didn’t know if that’s something that was carried over with independence.

It’s interesting you bring up learning it a lot through TV (with some at school as well) I know that’s been brought up as a tool alongside actually learning the language through more dedicated resources, but I’ve known a lot of folks who English is a second language and a lot of them said they learnt through TV, but I’d have no idea where I’d start with that avenue! Do you just pick up words you recognise and begin to fit it’s function? Kind of trial and error?

People know, there isn't really something called "independence" today. 132 years of colonization will leave a mark. Most of the people who were born before the 60's were illiterate. A few went to other countries to study, some managed to learn in French-controlled schools, and the lucky few managed to pick-up some Arabic studying in the masques that survived.

French is taught in elementary schools (3rd year and above). In middle school and highschool. English starts in the first year of middle school.

There is a lot of quality shows in English so it helps lol. What I understood about learning English is, your mind registers voices and subtitles. If you have 10 different sentences, but they share 1 simple word in common (like the word "yes") your mind will make the connection and registers the word. You collect a sizeable amount of simple words, so when you have 5 sentences with all the simple words except 1 difficult word, your mind will use subtitles to fill the blank. And the more you learn words, the easier it gets to learn new words. It's like momentum, the more you learn, the faster you pick up on new words.

Start with basic shows with clear subtitles because slangs and dialects will make it harder. Try and learn a language that's similar to your native language. If you speak English, try French. If you learn French, try Spanish. And so on.

I was told 'soy' is permanent, so 'soy Ingles' I Am English

And 'estoy' was temporary, so 'estoy bien' I Am Fine

Then again my Spanish is very, very limited and I make it up as I go along !!!

Can sort of get by reading French, at least get the gist.

Currently learning Danish via Duolingo and a very enthusiastic other half. Actually getting on quite well with it, moving there in two weeks and hope to be fluent in a few years.

Can also sing the Spanish (Portuguese?) bit in ‘Sun King’ by The Beatles, that counts right?

My mum was a French teacher and she lived there for a while. Instead of using this valuable resource I shunned any opportunity to learn.

Now would love to learn another language but still have no interest in French.

Fuchsntf, whilst you are in helpful problem-solving mode, I would appreciate your input into one of the thorniest dilemmas of the age:

"die Nutella" oder "das Nutella"  ?

nutella ist ein im Markenregister eingetragenes Fantasiewort. Entscheide also selbst, welchen Artikel du vor nutella setzt.“
