anyone else think commentators we not in newcastle yesterday, never heard them confirm that; but fairly sure they missed the offside and were convinced evans had given away a foul for 30 seconds because they were not at the game and watching the tv coverage

I've just remembered it's not FM and MW anymore, it's DAB and FM these days. As I only have DAB radio at work, when the rugby is on DAB and I have to work I'm screwed.

It happens maybe once a season (maybe even less), but it drives me nuts because I hate rugby, so I never think to look when it is on.

.. weirdly I love to listen to the rugby and find it annoying that it is on along with  the football at the same time!!!

They seem to be playing at the same time a lot nowadays even though LCFC matches are on Sundays this season.

This is an exciting time for both clubs, Tigers resurgence and LCFC attempt on Europe and the league, I really do not wish to miss out but football always takes precedence.

I said hate but that is a bit strong. I remember having John Duggan (one of our PE teachers) sniggering at me dropping the ball when all the big lads were coming for it, as an act of self protection.

I've been laughed at by proper talent... :revenge:

...now thats a blast from the past!!!

I had a teacher at Junior School called Mr. Wheeler,a thin and bespectacled chap who introduced us to a game called Rugby. I had no idea what it was about and we were told the idea is to get the ball from A to B.

Well everytime I received the ball I always forgot to pass it as I ran a zig zag pattern down the pitch stiff arming anyone who came near me. I always got a try as no one could catch me and at the time I felt it was a pointless game, nowhere near as good as playing football. It never took off at school, but I listened to the football on Radio Leicester and sometimes caught the Rugby and became drawn to the game some time after.

Basically British bulldog was my training cos no one had a rugby ball round our way. We had a lad at Stokes Wood who would do exactly that same style, leaving a trail of weedy types (like me) on the floor in his wake. He was massive for his age and his arms were about a foot longer than anyone else! It was like getting run over by a truck. lol

Then I moved to a more, erm, aspirational school (lancaster boys), with a team of rugby-playing giants. I found the ball very slippy from there on in.

The only kind of rugby I ever enjoyed watching was sevens, which is a crazy game.

....sevens looks like a great game, so much space, so much hard work to try and cover the spaces!!!

Played football in PE with lads who were playing for Leicester Boys team and playing at Right Back, they couldn't get past me and my teacher wanted me to play for the school Team. That was when schools had playing fields. I was quick and strong for my build but my father was not happy about it and it never happened,

As a past "Lancky Boy" did you ever see the program called The Choir, where Gareth Malone created a choir from the students, pretty good watch, just goes to show what a belief in yourself and supporting each other can produce.

I played with some quality young players too, but sadly they were all better than me.

I never did see The Choir, but my Mum was quite upset by some of it, funnily enough. She was educated by nuns back in Ireland, so it was a bit of an eye opener! I have mixed feelings about that school because I saw some grim stuff that was all a bit Lord of the Flies (I was there around 1980-ish), as well as the more decent bits. I have always liked Malone, communal singing is a wonderful thing, as we know.

I feel your pain over parental disapproval (although I wasn't particularly good). I think parent's are much more relaxed about letting kids follow their talents these days. Football wasn't seen as a decent thing for a young man (from a decent home, obvs) to be focused on, whereas these days most parents are delighted with anything that isn't the X-box, or other screen-based entertainment.

I know standards are different for parents these days,  but what do you think was behind the lack of support you got?

gosh, like Chariot's of Fire... :o that's quite tough to the modern eye, although I think it was quite common at the time. The past is a foreign country etc, etc.

I guess football was professional, but not respectable. My Dad was a rugby man, which at that point was amateur and respectable, but it wasn't a living.

....talking about amateur, I watched the Ben Marshall interview today and saw a player who throughout his career had an amateur approach to the game!!!

At 29 years old, he should be in his prime, but he looks mid thirties and constantly abused his body and had an approach to his profession which constantly got him into trouble and the people around him indulged him, and failed to give him the advice he needed instead of the lifestyle Marshall wanted.

Apparently got on great with Vardy and still keep in touch but Vardy does what is required to stay at the top of the game and Marshall is now playing Lancashire League football for Stoneclough. Makes you wonder how many players out there, who cling on to their boyhood friends and fail to take on any advice, contrary to their drinking buddies.

Elite sport will continue im sure but I wonder if they'll be stricter on media travelling and attending matches.

The media are classed as 'key workers' (yes yes I know we're not proper key workers) so I don't think much will change with the latest lockdown.

We've certainly not been told yet we can't travel to games.

Matt Piper was dreadful to begin with, but he is now superb IMO.

Great insight and tells it like it is - non of the fence sitting of Matt Elliott.

His Under the Cosh podcast is a great listen, he seems a genuinely decent bloke.

I love how 'Lestoh' he is and he doesn't hide it on the radio either.

On a few occasions I noticed the commentary seemed a second or two behind the action.

I'm not sure being there prevents commentators from being generally rubbish though...
