Three new central defenders

If we sign Kabak then I feel we need at least one more central defender and it could be argued we're going to need two (so three in total) especially if JJ is still crocked and takes time for him to get up to speed.

 

It might make sense if the third player is a loan perhaps? 

 

With Morgan and Fuchs both going we're left with our first choice of

 

Evans

Soyuncu 

Fofana 

 

Back up:

 

Amartay

Kabak

 

We could end up playing about 55 games next season so we're going to need a lot of rotation and cover. An injury or suspension could quite easily see a horror show of

 

Kabak

Amartay 

Soyuncu

 

We'd be then back in the realms of having Ndidi as potential cover and I never want to go back to those days, even with Somare coming in. 

 

A third signing would really be upgrading Amartay. Although it could be argued Daniel offers a degree of experience and ability in the position  without being bothered about playing a small bit part, which has value in itself I suppose. 

 

It also comes down to whether Rodgers is willing to change to a back 4 at times, but I get the feeling he's hell bent on playing the 5.

 

I certainly don't think Kabak is enough on his own.

How many premier league teams have more than 5 centre backs?

isnt Justin back running? If so he will be back by September ish. 

 

We dont need 5 CB's if we end up with 2 injured we will revert to 4 at the back or put Wilf in there.

Depends what formation you intend on playing, if we are still going to play 4 at the back, then Kabak and the other three is more than enough. I'm sure we'll mix up the tactics, so we'll just make do with Justin, Amartey, Castagne as the third centre back, should we lose a player or two.

If Rodgers seemed more open to changing to a back 4 I'd agree, but he had perfect opportunities to do it last season with the players availabe but moved heaven and earth to stay with 5, even if that meant taking Ndidi out of midfield.

We didn't have any credible wingers, that's why he changed it. We'll sign bertrand (hopefully), a centre back and a winger. We won't have that much money left after soumare and daka.

Pretty sure it was the lack of wingers which forced the 5 at the back, and then the form of Iheanacho

 

If he wanted 5 at the back as our main formation I think we would have seen it a lot more than until we were forced into it

Just look at the pattern over the past four season’s. 
 

17/18 we signed Maguire because we needed a starting quality CB, we also signed Dragovic who was well equipped at club & international level. The key thing though, despite being injured, Rob Huth was still on our books.

 

18/19, Huth ended up retiring, we replaced him with an experienced figure in Jonny Evans, leaving us with Evans & Big Wes as the experienced duo.

 

Since then, Wes has taken a back seat, yet we still had him on our books and were able to call upon him a few times. 
 

He’s now retired and we find ourselves in the same situation as 18/19. 
 

When this kind of thing happens, fans tend to throw out numerous ridiculous assumptions. Kabak will do, Ndidi can cover there, Bertrand can cover there, we have Amartey & Benkovic.

 

None of those situations are ideal, 

 

What we need is another Evans/Big Wes type figure, preferably as a stop gap like Bertrand, until someone like Tarkowski becomes available.

If any side in the league had injuries to their first three centre halves they'd have a problem. Ask Liverpool.

Yes but that means we now need to sign another 4 centre backs... you know... just in case any of the back ups also get injured :ph34r:
