What’s the actual rule regards whether players have to go off the pitch when the physio comes on?

Today Ben White goes down like a sack of dirt, physio on … stays on the pitch.

Odegaard goes down like a sack of dirt, physio on … goes off the pitch.

🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

Also what are the rules when it comes to the ref stopping play due to injuries? I thought he could only do it with head injuries or something really serious?

He can't really have thought that Odegaard had a face injury/serious injury to have stopped play?

Yeah agree, the inconsistency of stopping the game for Odegaard’s injury but not stopping when Soumaré went down prior to Arsenal heading down the other end of the pitch and winning the corner which they scored the first from was baffling.

The White one was given as a foul straight away on Vards so the game had stopped there & then, so no issue with that, although genuinely don’t understand why he didn’t have to go off after the physio came on …. Is it because he didn’t actually “treat” him? He literally bent down and spoke to him for 2mins, didn’t get the magic sponge out etc and then waltz off the pitch and White stays on with Vards picking up a yellow, couldn’t have been that bad could it? 🧐

He didn't stop Arsenal playing when Soumare was down first half...

Sure the rule changed 2-3 years ago - so if the player tackling gets booked, the injured player doesn’t have to go off. In theory so you don’t get punished for being on the end of bad tackle. Vardy got booked for his challenge on White

Player doesn't have to go off if he's being treated for an offence that got a card.

Exactly …. The ref’s inconsistency on that was ludicrous.

But then I don’t think I had ever noticed players NOT having to go off when the physio comes on …. So what is the rule around that? Presumably there is one and it’s not the ref making a gaff time n time again?

Ahhh OK, gotcha! Genuinely didn’t know the rule, that clears that one up then! Cheers 👍🏻

OMG, I hope it wasn’t that long ago as I’ve only noticed it last couple of games!!! My word!! 🙈🤣🤣

Soumare wasn’t in a position where he was likely to interfere with play

odegaard was lying just outside the penalty area so would play us onside

you may not like it but that meant Oliver had to stop the game

Think it's time in football a rule was introduced where if player goes down to recieve treatment or very long substitution, the match clock should be stopped on the on screen match clock at least then us fans in the stadium. know were not being robbed of time. They do the same rugby at least then no one can complain about the injury team added at the end of the game.

That was the only possible reason I could think of. However, for me the ref should not stop play in those situations as any player could simulate to ruin an opponents attack.

that’s true but the ref does have an ongoing connection to Stockley Park and can ask if there is evidence that the injury is likely to be real (not sure he is supposed to under the protocols)  - it was questionable as to whether it was a foul by lookman.  Had we played on and scored because he was playing us onside, do you think the VAR would have told Oliver that it should have been a foul ?

It is my understanding that the play who receives treatment has to leave the pitch unless the challenge that caused the requirement for treatment ends with yellow card.

What annoyed me with the Soumaré one was the ref never even bothered coming over to him, didn’t check if he needed a physio, didn’t call one on it was Ramsdale who called on the physio

Who knows what VAR would have done. By regulations nothing as the foul happened too long before. But we all know the VAR process is full of flaws.

It’s the most important law which is unwritten …………. common sense

avoids all sorts of aggro for the official

Players going down because they want to pisses me off.

If they go down, stop the game, and there's nothing wrong with them they should get "treated" and be off the pitch for 5 mins.

Stop them doing it ffs.

If they receive treatment they should go off. Oliver was wrong yesterday, it's that simple.

White stayed on because vards was booked for the challenge

odegaard and Bouba left the pitch because there was no free kick given (irrelevant of no yellow card)
