Like other English sides, we suffer from delusions about how good we are relative to the opposition.

Like last year, we seem to believe we have enough to breeze the group with either little effort or a reserve side (or both)

Last year’s campaign showed proved that and I fear we are going to learn the same lesson again

Only this time, on the whole, we have played with very strong starting 11s.

What does European Credentials even mean? You hear it thrown around a lot, but I can’t see how a good 3-0 win in Brugge 5 years ago could have any impact on a game away in Napoli this season.

“How well equipped are we to perform in Europe” … the reference to seasons in the past is part of the make up as to where we are today. You’re right, the result in Brugge doesn’t impact our performance in Napoli.

👍It's the sort of thing that media types like to talk about to make themselves sound knowledgeable. It's all a load of crap. You play the team in front of you, European competition is no different.

Not sure if it’s a vocabulary issue, the word “credentials” doesn’t imply knowledge, it’s just a word.

You’re quite correct, every game of football you “play the team in front of you”, thanks for your delicious insight!

So it’s all a load of codswallop then, that means nothing at all.

Couldn’t agree more. Codswallop is what people say to sound more knowledgeable about not knowing what something means 👀

The teams with the best 'European Credentials' are those with the biggest budgets.

The 'European Credentials' argument doesn't work, when Man City and Spurs have reached a latter stage in the Champions League in the last 5 years, than 7 times winners AC Milan.

European Credentials = Budget + Depth/Ability of playing squad.

Those who believe that 'European experience' means something.....You know that means you think Forest would beat us right?

Who said the word 'credentials' implies knowledge? I didn't. The quote is also shortened in an attempt to misrepresent, again a known media/journo technique.

It's a very winnable competition, you only have to look at the finalists since it started, it definitely feels like we don't take it seriously

We did breeze through the group last time. We were qualified by four games, the earliest chance. League toppers by five

We have the capability of doing better than last season in the competition but the problem for me is that the players don't seem to want it enough.  Feels like our so called better players think this is below their station.  Too many putting in a I can't be bothered attitude to the games.  The fact that Victor Moses ran rings round us says it all.

The points from the Champions League run have now expired. We are back to the English minimum coefficient unless we get 5 more points. We've earned 14 points over the last 5 seasons which gets replaced by the English minimum coefficient of 18.785. It's 2 per group stage win, bonuses for advancing rounds. I'm not even sure that we're surpass our former 32 by winning this competition. Not that coefficient matters if we won... West Ham are above us in club coefficient by points earned this season. Looks to me like we're back to square one on that one.

But we do have a deeper squad now reflecting that we have additional games to play.

I’ve seen some posters suggest that winning the Europa League is within our capability, others acknowledge that our lack of experience on the European stage has a tangible impact on our ability to progress beyond a certain stage of the competition (which is my view).

I just wanted to put my 2 pence worth in and open the conversation as I find it interesting how fellow supporters set their own expectations.

What exactly does "within our capability" mean?

Although it's a different sort of competition, pretty certain that before the 15/16 season and just coming off the Great Escape, that anyone suggesting that winning the PL title was "within our capability" would have been more likely a candidate for the looney bin. Of course, winning the Europa League should be considered "within our capability" but whether we can actually win it is a different kettle of fish. There are way too many factors (injuries, form, scheduling, weather, officiating, 'unknowns', etc.) that influence performance and determine outcomes in a season-long continent-wide competition.

Apart from winning the Spanish FOURTH Division over 50 years ago (and the "Intertoto"), Villareal had won NOTHING at all (at any level whatsoever) before winning the EL this year. You beat the team in front of you and move on.

What's BR's overall record in 2 legged European games with Liverpool, Celtic and us?

His record in Europe is shocking. It's one of those reputations I wondered if he got a bit unfairly but it really is dire.

Context is important. His one season in Europe with Liverpool he had no strikers apart from Balotelli. At Celtic we were lumbered in groups with Barca, City and Moenchengladbach in one year, PSG, Bayern the next year (and finished 3rd) and then finished 2nd in our Europa League group the year after, before Rodgers left. For yous, he finished top of his Europa League group before getting knocked out in the next round. So while he could be doing better in Europe, it's certainly not a dismal record.
