Also, it doesn't help that it's held every 2 years and is an expanded tournament, these days. I don't quite think it's enough to put clubs off buying African players but I can imagine that they certainly have the competition in mind.

Have Nigeria qualified :sweating:

Still qualifying stages at the moment, groups of 4 with top 2 qualifying for the tournament, players who are currently in our squad:

Nigeria are 1st in their group, played 2 won 2

Ghana are 1st in their group, played 2 won 1 drawn 1

Zambia are 2nd in their group, played 2 won 1 lost 1

Senegal are 1st in their group, played 2 won 2

To be fair playing this in Africa in summer would be insane.

CONCACAF and CONMEBOL play summer tournaments, tbf, and they suffer many of the same heat/weather issues as Africa.

But having a biennial tournament in the middle of the season for the Big 5 European Leagues -- and for the Premier League, especially, since it doesn't have a winter break, isn't helping the game in Africa. If would make more sense if the bigger African leagues were on a summer schedule, like most of the Western hemisphere leagues, but they aren't: Mostly, the begin in the autumn.

I mean, a team will take the hit if it's a Salah, but it will affect the careers of mid-talent African players, who might not be bought due to concerns over availability. FIFA should just say players only have to be released once every four years for continental tournaments outside the usual international windows. That would probably fix part of the problem.

It should be played once every 4 years, but the European summer months are almost unplayable in the hotbeds of African football - West and Central Africa (virtual monsoon season), and North Africa (heatwave). 29 of the 33 AFCON titles have been won by teams from these regions (and the 2 won by East African team was way back in the 1960s).

You're right it is pretty cold there right now. Leicester is a few degrees warmer. So pleased to be visiting.
