Anyone been watching it?

I was channel hoping yesterday evening and came across it on BBC4 of all places. The 100 metres mens preliminary round was on.Fascinating stuff where athletes who hadn’t got the required qualifying time could compete. One athlete from every country can qualify this way (didn’t know this)

100 metres quarter’s today.field events and the mixed 400 metre relay.Didn’t even know such a thing existed.Fantastic race tbf.

It feels like this has not been advertised at all. 20 years ago this was a real showpiece event for the BBC, now they’ve got it lurking on BBC 4.

Probably due to the football on BBC 1/2 and the timing doesn't help either.

Crowds there have been pretty small too.

USA 1-2-3 in the 100m which i think was expected.

the atmosphere was pretty flat and didn't even fill the stadium for the 100m final. would've thought that would be quite a big attraction with it being hosted in the states.

Can't see any stand out medal prospects for GB but we do have a young 800m runner called Max Burgin, who ran a world lead time last month with a pace maker for the first 600m. No championship experience outside of the UK level, so will be interesting how he gets on if it's a slower tactical race. Katarina Johnson-Thompson is struggling in the heptathlon so far.

Well done to Jason Wightman getting gold in 1500 metres. Deserves more prevalent airtime than BBC4.

Was on BBC 1 tbf but middle of the night so probably not many saw it live and outside of the Athletics media not sure how much coverage this great achievement will get unfortunately.

Great performance though .

Link here for those who missed it .

Well done Jake. Great that Steve Cram was commentator. Our last 1500m world champion in 1983

Just seen a few highlights, but aren't there any medal ceremonies anymore. World Champs were second only to the Olympics at one point, but looks like no one can be bothered, including the organisers.

They showed Wightmans earlier, so they are doing them. Just think the BBC haven’t shown many

Yeah it's a bit odd, they get the medals immediately after the race then have the ceremony later.

i think they were fake ones - there have been proper medals at the  ceremonies.

GB end 11th with 7 medals which seems a fair total - 5 bronzes and 1 gold/silver.

Middle distance events seem to be our best suit atm.

Shame we don't really have anyone of note in the field events now as we did in the past.

I seem to recall seeing medal ceremonies. But getting a medal just after the race is more appropriate somehow. The whole patriotism thing is being overstated these days - athletes standing tearfully while flags are hoisted and anthems played.

Then the medal haul is shown - and it's going to show how effective the American collegiate system is at creating champions. One is also aware that, were the selections based on times or distances, many more Americans, Ethiopians and Kenyans would be included in the mix. Seeing someone trail in several seconds or minutes behind the main pack of runners means they're there because their country is part of the system, not that they're there on merit. But that really just highlights the money certain countries can throw at publicising their training superiority.

One thing I dislike is American athletes being interviewed post race. I don't mind Caribbean runners being given BBC attention - there's strong links with the UK with the islands. But this country has no real social links with the US.

Great how Muir, Hodgkinson and Wightman have done so well against the odds.

It's a tough watch.

Watch the athletes come onto the track, watch them warm up, watch them being introduced to the crowd, watch the race, watch countless replays, watch the interviews, back to the studio so 4 more people can analyze the race, then back to the stadium to talk to other presenters about the race.  And that was just the heats.

Good that UK is becoming good again at middle distance. We were spoilt when we had Ovett, Coe and Cram all around same time

I can bear the commentary on the heats - anything informative on the athletes themselves, but the in-studio stuff becomes tedious after a while. The events are the thing and, given the actual live stuff was at a time very few Europeans (and Africans) would comfortably view it, a recording could be cobbled together and reviewed in early evening. It feels as if the studio + Johnson and Cram are padding out the programme.

Its a bit of overkill.

Analysis in team sports or technical sports add a lot of value as there are so many variable.

There's only so much that can be analysed about a running race and in most instances the runner can either time things better/worse, or train to be faster.
