City’s Youngsters Depart UK For Soccer Sevens

The 2023 edition of the international seven-a-side tournament sees 16 teams compete for the Main Cup title, with Premier League involvement from the Foxes and current holders Newcastle United, among others, with the pair drawn together in a four-team group.

Ahead of the trip, on Tuesday morning, the side coached by Ben Petty held their final training session inside the indoor dome at LCFC Training Ground, putting in preparations for the competition they last won in 2017 and last attended in 2019.

Then, earlier this afternoon, the team made their departure south from Seagrave, before jetting off on the 10-and-a-half-hour flight to Hong Kong’s Causeway Bay district.

A squad of 11 players have headed out to Southeast Asia, with goalkeepers Brad Young and Chituru Odunze joined by Joe Wormleighton, Harvey Godsmark-Ford and captain Lewis Brunt in defence.

Midfielders Brandon Cover, Deniche Hill, Kasey McAteer and Wanya Marcal-Madivadua are also off to Hong Kong, along with Kian Pennant and Tawanda Maswanhise – both in the squad to provide attacking quality.

Games will be played in two seven-minute halves, starting on Saturday, with the knockout stages to follow on Sunday – all at the scenic Hong Kong Football Club venue.

The fast-paced action will be covered across LCFC.com and @LCFC on social media. Check back to see how City’s Under-21s get on in Hong Kong.

Having landed in Hong Kong on Wednesday, the players have begun becoming accustomed to their new surroundings, with two days to go until the competition begins, when they will be taking on Newcastle United, Hong Kong Football Club and HKFC Captain’s Select in Group C.

Ahead of the big kick-off on Saturday, when fixtures will be two seven-minute halves, the team got a feel for the pitch at HKFC in a practice game, played out below scenic views of the Hong Kong skyline on Thursday morning.

Resources Capital Football Club, also known as Chun Fung in Hong Kong, finished eighth in the 10-team Hong Kong Premier League this season and provided the first test of the southeast Asia trip for City’s Under-21s.

Kian Pennant opened the scoring in the first half, before Tawanda Maswanhise added a second for the Foxes. Chun Fung then grabbed a consolation late on, providing a strong start in humid conditions.

Wanya Marcal-Madivadua moves forward with the ball.

With the game made up of four quarters of seven minutes each, there was plenty of time on the artificial surface, allowing all 11 squad members to put minutes in the tank.

LCFC.com and @LCFC’s social media channels will continue to bring updates from the tournament throughout this week.

I remember sitting in a lounge at HK airport many years ago and the Blackburn team rolled in (they’d played in a pre season tournament)

Steve Keane ended up across the table from me and I asked him how difficult it was in the heat - he answered that the heat was the least of their troubles - it was stopping the players escaping their hotel in the evenings to go to wan chai !!

Petty: We’re Raring To Go

- Leicester City’s Development Squad are at HKFC Citi Soccer Sevens in Hong Kong
- The competition begins with the group stages being played out on Saturday
- Coach Ben Petty previewed the tournament and City’s upcoming opposition
- Newcastle United are in the Foxes’ group, one of several British sides present

Since arriving in East Asia earlier this week, the task of acclimatising to humid conditions and the change in rules has been a challenging one, but the squad have been able to settle into the rhythm with a friendly fixture against Chun Fung.

And ahead of the competition getting underway, LCFC TV caught up with City’s coach to gain insight into the preparations for what will be an intense two-day contest.

“We’re struggling with the heat,” Petty admitted. “I think it takes a few days to adapt to a different time zone and a different game. The heat is frightening, it’s very difficult. It’s really going to test them over the weekend.

“It’s also different rules – no offsides and very much a transitional game, which is something we don’t really practice in the season. But we’ve had two really good days of training and I think the lads are up for it.

Hong Kong Soccer Sevens: Day Two

“It’s a good test for them, like it will be for all the other clubs as well that are out here trying to win it. A lot of the teams that we’re going to play we’ve played in the league this season – Fulham, Brighton and obviously we know about Aston Villa.

“It’s really good opposition and obviously the foreign opposition that we’re going to play as well. We’re really looking forward to it. It’s got a little bit of everything.”

Placed in Group C alongside holders Newcastle United, as well as local sides HKFC and Captain’s Select, the Foxes are vying to reach Sunday’s Main Cup quarter-finals and ultimately regain the trophy they have previously claimed on two occasions.

Although a different format, they are entering the competition in good form, having beaten Everton on the final day of the Premier League 2 Division 1 season, after drawing at Manchester United three days earlier.

Petty continued: “We’ve got to try and stop them (Newcastle) winning it again. They’ve won it the last two times. There’s been a gap because of COVID-19, but they are the last winners.

The way you are treated at Hong Kong Football Club is second to none. It’s a fantastic facility.

Ben Petty LCFC TV
“It’s a tough group with the two local teams who know the game. They are used to the conditions. Let’s hope we have a good Saturday and move into Sunday.

“We finished the season in a much better place in terms of results and we want to build on that and take those performances from the last two or three games of the season into Hong Kong Soccer Sevens.”

Played at the scenic Hong Kong Football Club, it’s a familiar setting for Petty and some of the backroom team, but a new experience for all but one of the players.

“It’s a wonderful place,” the 46-year-old added. “The way you are treated at Hong Kong Football Club is second to none. It’s a fantastic facility. I think we have the benefit that some of the staff have been before, and we can give that experience to the group, but as for the players, there’s only Lewis [Brunt] who has played it, so it’s a new game to them.”

Realistically what is Brunt (played in the PL) going to get from a 7 aside kick about?

I’d guess it’s more to do with what he can bring to the rest of the younger players out there. A steadying ‘experienced presence’
