The Championship was extremely weak last season and then Burnley probably have a weaker side now than last season. Us, Ipswich, Leeds, Southampton etc are a different grade to last season's contenders.

Lets sign Hamer when SUFC go down.

People vastly underestimate the quality of the PL on here.

Even the poorer teams are miles ahead of what you come up against in the Championship.

(Not including last years promoted sides as they are either still adjusting or absolutely terrible. Early days)

I hope we get someone like Brentford in the FA cup so we get an idea of how we’d get on.

That doesn't really give much of an indication in isolation.

Much like Blackburn in the cup last season gave no indication of this season.

Whilst not simple to do, I think the path to doing it is clear:

- remainder of this season is about promotion, but it is also an opportunity to continue to get better at playing this system

- in the summer upgrade on players where we can, Vestergaard and Ndidi (if no new contract) are the obvious ones for me given their contract situations

- good, sensible, pre-season

Then hope it works out. There will still be some dross in the PL, but if promoted it will be alongside 2 others from the Champ. Aim to be better than them and one current PL team.

Step 1: do not let Maresca go under any circumstance

Step 2: give Maresca anything and everything he wants

Not being funny but these principles are what left us lumbered with Rodgers whilst we fell apart with him sat on a long contract.

Yes Maresca clearly has more class and professionalism in his little finger nail than Rodgers has ever had but the principles are the same.

I would personally rather than club have long term strategic planning in place so that if we lose Maresca, we can replace him well. Like Brighton did with Potter and are Zerbi. Same goes for players.

I think this is a tad previous... however, to avoid a @fuchsntf admonishment, make sure we have a very solid backbone, both in terms of personnel and attitude.

OH dear, what a lost and poor soul I must be..

Dear man, just as sometimes what you say gets lost in translation, I think it also happens the other way round :)

I was having one of these ‘silly’ and somewhat ‘childish’ debates (well, for a grown ass bloke anyway) with a forest fan at work on the quality of our respective squads.

I think the ‘pull’ of Leicester being more of an established name will support the transition compared to that of the three promoted teams.

I’m not of the belief we have a squad that by right is a top 10 squad. Even a top 12 squad going into the next season.

Should we get promoted, next seasons PL is going to be stronger than this season. We go into it without a recognised 12/15 goal striker for the top level. A keeper that looks competent but untested. A centre back trio that will need replacing in its entirety. And wingers that will need to increase their output.

Average PL teams (Brentford, Forest, WHU, Wolves etc) arguably have stronger squads than us currently.

With this said, we have an identity of playing, a manager with competence, a midfield that half of the PL would appreciate and the experience to navigate the rigours of the league.

Next season will be really tough. And IMO a fight to the end. Are we going to be in the same position as a Burnley/Sheff U/Luton - I don’t believe so. But that calibre of team in the PL next season won’t exist.

Nice topic 👍🏻

"A centre back trio that will need replacing in its entirety." Here's Maresca's opinion on (at least) one of them ...

Enzo Maresca tells Wout Faes what he must stop doing to become top centre-back - Leicestershire Live (leicestermercury.co.uk)

Dear sir.. The audacity of it all, I have never been the right way round..

Blackburn last season showed we were sh*t and deserved to go down.

The team that played them is completely different now so wouldn’t be able to use that as an indication anyway.

Which is his achilles heel. He’s showed that he can have unbelievable games but demonstrates with too much regularity that lapse in judgment. Whether it be switching off, or rash challenges, or questionable decisions in crucial moments.

I mentioned again in another thread something similar on Faes. A comment back referenced the fact he is a Belgium international. You could suggest this is more a reference to the lack of top quality choice at CB these days for Belgium rather than Faes being of that ilk. Similar, IMO, to that of Conor Coady.

Let’s face it, if Faes didn’t have the lapses/judgment errors, he wouldn’t be playing for Leicester in the Championship.

We will probably become a yo-yo club, I’m not saying we’ll go down next season (if we’re up) however I think we’ll become one of them mid to lower table teams flirting with relegation each season with 40pts the goal.

We already are! Of all the clubs in the top 2 tiers, City are 4th in the yo-yo club league table.

Birmingham City (32), Cardiff City (26), Burnley (24) then Leicester City (22) are the top four, the numbers in brackets showing the times each has changed division.

IF we go up we will need a few quality additions.

I'm very happy with the squad we have, many will step up easily.  I couldn't say we have made a poor signing over the summer but we might have to mix things up a little.

For all the possession stats we give teams chances which will be put away by any half decent PL striker.

We're still some way off being a side that was sitting comfortably in the top 10.

Every single player have their lapses, it's a good player management to put it out there... GIVES Faes an early season target, plus don't lets be  thinking our top PL players are perfect.. IT'S About getting that last piece of in Faes case concentration... But not expecting a 100% perfect transition, he will hopefully then up his weak area a little more..

Good conversation piece from managers trying to tweak, various areas in his charges.. Nobody should be so vain,fans/manager that they expect perfect 10s..

Sport management whyles, that's all, but still important, to squeeze that last piece out of that player..

Nothing less than the players accept themselves..

"Push me to where I don't know how far I can go". Faes is not a worse player because of it.. 3 games ago (note) his concentration slips and he slips in the last 1/3 of the pitch.. Enzo waited until now, not immediately after the game.

Also a good explanation from Enzo to describe Doyle & Faes individual needs. ONE Older.. One younger.. Indirect also challenging Doyle to keep him on his high level.. BUT Doyle has other weaknesses, that at the moment are not appropriate to hang out on the washing line..

It’s not a case of expecting perfect 10’s. It’s not having those 4 or 5/10 performances in you every 4 games at the top level. It’s a ‘nice’ view to not put a limit on a player. To hope for the top.

I struggle to buy in to the type of articles cited. Flipping it, he’s not likely to come out and say he’s found his level.

There’s value in your rhetoric on good management to support a player’s development. Not every player however has a ceiling as high as the elite.

Happy to see nobody is expecting a walk in the park

I reckon 99.9% are well balanced posts..
