It was the result of things that had been building for a while. As I was living in Bulgaria I was very aware of the insane panic over Bulgarians and Romanians from 2013 onwards that led to Brexit, and the anti-liberal backlash was growing in America too I am sure. Most surprising thing about 2016 for me was that people were surprised.

I'll happily confess to being surprised by the speed and the vehemence of the change.

Since then, it would appear that the ideological conflict has only intensified, and the stakes continue to rise (in fact, they may end up being absolute.)

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that aims to overhaul US federal elections, including by requiring voters to show proof of citizenship and limiting when states can receive mail-in ballots.

Experts warn the move could disenfranchise millions of Americans who do not have easy access to a passport or other legal documents proving they have the right to vote.

It is unclear how enforceable the order is, given US states have wide legal leeway to determine how they run their elections. It is expected to be challenged in court.

The logical next step, I suppose. Why risk rigging an election when you can suppress the vote to win it instead?

And the following one, and the one after that...

That's a key part of it all too, yes.

I know I keep saying it, but anyone really aware of the pathway we're going down as a species outside the most ardent nihilist really should be terrified.

I still maintain that the year 2016 broke something in the space-time continuum.

Someone bought one of those monkey paws to make us win the league without realising it was cursed, and that is why Brexit, Trump, Covid and Ukraine happened. We’re in the darkest timeline now.

Worth it tbh.

One thing I’m struggling with on this signal group is why no one bothered to look at the list of group members and spot the rogue one

when I’m on a watsap group I always look through the members so I know who is on it and avoid saying something embarrassing or potentially upsetting/inappropriate (however minimal that may be).

I assume signal is the same in that you can look through the list of names. Surely in a political/security group this is even more relevant ???    If there are numbers which aren’t identified as being in your contacts then surely you ask others in the group (away from it) who that person is ???

seems nuts to me

Possibly not.

Unfortunately decisions like this will divide and cause more conflict right up to the point where there is serious civil unrest.

Which is exactly what Convict#47 and his followers want, because a. They have less compunction to use and are therefore better at violent repression than the side they want to repress, and b. It leads to a situation where enough people will accept such a repressive state for anyone outside a particular demographic simply to stop the aforementioned violence (or the risk of it).

Rachael, just tell the Bank of England to lower the interest rate, there’s a good girl

I think the Government needs to go even further with cutting PIP. It absolutely should be means tested at the very least.

The way it's set up is like compensation for being disabled, rather than being in any way being designed to cover extra costs incurred by the disability.

£5bn is nothing really against the huge and ever rising welfare bill.

Tbf, I don’t think that constitutes infidelity…..

but your assumption is correct - I haven’t

There are signs that the SCOTUS is not quite as compliant as Trump hopes. They certainly seem to be quite assertive when it comes to executive or federal overreach, which would not bode well for this executive order should this come to court.

In a weird way, it's kind of reassuring that they're so galactically incompetent.

An administration that can't even manage what is essentially a more sophisticated WhatsApp group properly is going to struggle to dismantle 250 years of federal governance.

Firefighters are racing to save people and ancient artefacts from the largest wildfires in South Korea's history, which have killed at least 26 people so far

Tens of thousands have also been displaced in the blazes, which started in the south-east on 21 March.

That's grim. Unusually hot and dry there for the time of year, too, which really doesn't help.

The same people that are kicking off about this jasmine crockett calling someone governer hot wheels ( not the best idea) will be the same people that laughed when trump mocked the disabled reporter on his rally. Dumb f***
