Guest Bilo Posted 12 April 2025 Posted 12 April 2025 What about John Mousinho? He seems to have had a decent start to managerial life at Pompey and there's no prospect of his team going down, despite very limited resources and a rank injury list, having just won promotion. He seems pragmatic, flexible and appears to be quite articulate.

Popular Post cityfanlee23 Posted 12 April 2025 Popular Post Posted 12 April 2025 (edited) Someone massively going under the radar at the moment is Liam Manning at Bristol City. Nobody can doubt the job Pearson did in stabilising them as they sold off everyone and refused to reinvest, the Bristol city fans didn’t want Pearson to go. But since arriving Manning took Bristol to 11th after taking over in 15th, and now has them in the top 6 with a budget of £10m. He's done a fantastic job building on Pearson's foundation. Prior to that he did a great job at Oxford, MK Dons and Lommel in Belgium. Was part of the city group so has contacts at Man City and its clubs. I would add, he has got Bristol City there with quite a low number of wins at 16 with 5 to play but there’s no doubt he’s improved the club this season and is taking advantage of a very competitive mid table. Not completely sold on him but definitely worth keeping an eye on him for the summer if our main targets don’t come. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liam_Manning Edited 12 April 2025 by cityfanlee23 12
Popular Post studentofthegame Posted 12 April 2025 Popular Post Posted 12 April 2025 Still want Urs Fischer Fell apart a bit at the end at Union Berlin but his record was remarkable They finished 8th in the second division before he took over, got them promoted to the Bundesliga for the first time since it formed in 1990 in his first full season. Finished 11th, 7th, 5th, 4th in his 4 season in the Bundesliga. Progressed from Conference League to Europa League to Champions League season on season. Only spent about 100 mil over 5 seasons with only one signing over 10 mil. In 20/21 lost Andersson, his top scorer of the previous 2 seasons, signed Max Kruse who was top scorer for a season and then lost him to Wolfsburg 18 months later, signed Awoniyi who became top scorer and then also lost him after just one season. Sheraldo Becker was top scorer next and again lost him after one season. So in 4 consecutive seasons the top scorer from the previous season left and each time they kept progressing and finishing higher until it eventually caught up with them. As well as Kruse they also lost Friedrich (starting CB) in January and Andrich (Starting CM) in the summer of 2021. So they went from 7th to 5th whilst losing 3 key players. So he took a midtable second division side to the Conference League, Europa League, and Champions League in 5 seasons, finished higher each consecutive season whilst spending minimal amounts and consistently losing key players every season. His sides don't play particularly pretty football but it is efficient and effective. In 20/21 they had the 4th best defence in the league, 3rd best in 21/22, and when they finished 4th in 22/23 they only conceded 38 goals in 34 games, the joint lowest with Bayern. They play disciplined, rigid, well drilled football. 4 1 1

I think I remember calling for him around the time that Rodgers appeared on the brink, and it was felt that a combination of the hierarchy not wanting his style of football and the fact that Union were flying made him impossible. I like the idea, but being unemployed for two years and never managed in England are red flags.

Lots of examples of managers coming over here and doing fine without any experience in this country. Nuno and Bielsa and more recently Le Bris at Sunderland this season.

Nuno had managed Wolves and Spurs before going to Forest, but I take the point. You could also argue that Potter was unemployed for two years before going to West Ham, and we'd all have taken him over RVN. The problem is that our board have probably never heard of him and would burst a blood vessel if they watched Union games under him or saw their xG stats.

It’s like when Rodgers was messing it up and there were so many decent foreign managers available who we could get. Fischer, Slot, Hutter and Glasner are ones that I seem to remember.
bigpapagoldy Posted 12 April 2025 Posted 12 April 2025 Not taking the piss, but what about Bielsa, the way he had that Leeds side playing was refreshing!!!
Parker Pen Posted 12 April 2025 Posted 12 April 2025 I know they are only betting odds but Rohl has slipped from being odds on at Southampton to 2/1 and Gary O’Neills odds are shortening. I know Rohl has been linked to Leipzig as well so maybe an indication that’s where he is headed?

He was always the number one choice. You’re right that Enzo was initially approached after Rodgers was sacked. But I’m pretty sure I remember reading a piece by a connected journalist (was it Tom Collomosse?) that said Scott Parker was seen as a specialist ‘get-out-of-the-championship’ manager, and was their first choice at the start of the summer?

The data shows that Boro play a slower and intricate style, which is what the club hierarchy wants but is demonstrably unsuccessful for newly promoted sides in the Premier League. I find this interesting, so the promotion fighting clubs are doing the opposite of whats needed at the top level. Based on this Sheff Utd will do the best out of the promoted clubs next season if promoted.

God I hope he has changed his ways if he ends up here though, his football was a snooze-fest. Just listened to this, thanks for sharing. Thought he came across really well overall. Haven't previously had a lot of time for him as from what I'd seen in previous interviews he always came across like Rodgers with sound bites. The only red flag for me was when he was asked would he change his approach and he said no, then seemed to go along with Gary's suggestion of tweaking, though it didn't seem like that was at the forefront of his mind. I think he'd do a decent job given the opportunity here. The squad for me is better than any he's had previously so I think some of the issues he experienced at both Swansea and Southampton wouldn't be so big an issue here. I wouldn't necessarily champion him for the role, but I think we could do a lot worse.

Claudio Fannieri Posted 12 April 2025 Posted 12 April 2025 All out of work managers talk well to the media, very easy to talk a good game, completely different once you are appointed and the pressure is on to get results. I would rather we appointed a manager based on recent achievements of on basis of good reputation rather than media sound bites or punditry.
Guest Bilo Posted 12 April 2025 Posted 12 April 2025 I'm increasingly convinced that we need to move away from possession football. It's all very well having pundits drooling over us putting together a 36 pass move leading to a goal against Oxford, but it'll do little in the Premier League. Honestly, of the names touted, I'd go for Mousinho, Fischer or Röhl.

Very easy to sit down and come across well in a soft interview, doubt he'd get the same reaction on here when he says how well we played after a 2-0 defeat.
