The news will be full of celebrating Venezuelans in the streets ( assuming the army and police don’t try and double down)

Western public opinion is a fickle thing

they should take the World Cup games away from America , they won’t but they should

I think FIFA have already clearly shown they are onboard with whatever Trump wants to do.

Presume they tried to whack Maduro?

From what it looks like, they wanted him alive.

When this comes up at the UN, will the UK actually show some courage and vote for any resolution denouncing it?

The only good thing that might come from this is even the most sheltered and naive person can see the current US administration for what they really are now, and it's going to be difficult, even for them, to lie about "peace" when they've done this.

I wonder whether any national football authority might actually decide to boycott the World Cup next year and encourage others to do likewise?

Probably not given FIFA would likely hand out a ridiculous sanction for it, but...

One of these moments will eventually be the Franz Ferdinand moment sadly, we’re just getting too many of them nowadays and the world is becoming more and more of a melting pot. The camel can’t take much more pieces of straw. The frog in the slowly raising temperature saucepan is now approaching boiling point. I’ve run out of metaphors….

This administration doing its usual abuse of power but without any kind of pretence anymore.

The UK diplomats have some serious work to do.

Reports now that maduro had agreed a deal to be taken by the Americans

I mean that doesn’t excuse the bully boy tactics

but most of the world will say that the ends justify the means on the basis that they don’t want to upset trump and maduro shouldn’t be in power

Nah america’s power is still wild when you think about it. No other country could have done that today. Maybe China in a few years  and only on the basis they knew the US wouldn’t engage them.

They’d have been stupid to kill him, he’s a bad man but he’s hardly the Bin Laden type. They’ll probably send him in Dmitriev’s jet next time he’s in Miami and let him live out his days on ex dictators row in Moscow with Assad and co.

The Crans-Montana fire has me thinking of the Station Club situation in Rhode Island in 2003.

There's a video of it – you can look it up online, but it's' nothing for the faint-hearted.

I thought the same. That video is horrific. One moment you seen dozens of people trapped in a doorway, a minute later it's engulfed in flames. It's why I always make a mental note of every fire exit, anywhere I go.
