And give the way the world is changing, that's just the beginning.

So perhaps instead of being simply reactive, could the UK and other players instead be a little proactive and look more at the causes of these migrations in the first place? Because otherwise, the only options are the status quo or abandoning a great many innocent human beings to their (rather horrible) fate in pure social Darwinist style.

3 women killed on their way to the UK via small boat the other day. Covered up as heart attacks.

Did climate change make them do that?

Tell me you are backed by the same folks as the Republicans without telling me. America barely had a lock down because of Trump and his red states. Lowe is a prat.

don’t believe that. I live in a ‘ red state’ and we had a lock down. We could barely do anything or go anywhere,  so many businesses had to close, so many services just stopped happening.

You are being kind just  only calling Lowe a prat, though

If it wasn't for geopolitical issues (of which climate change is one steadily increasing part), there would be no need for them to get on one of those boats in the first instance.

I'm not sure what about addressing the bigger causal issues rather than just reacting to their consequences is somehow unclear or problematic here.

Let’s just say these people are leaving their home nations because of climate change…

They are travelling through many safe countries in order to get to the UK. We know why they are going to great lengths to get to this country in particular.

And do you really think we just welcome unknown predominantly males in to the country? It’s a security threat amongst other detrimental things.

A lot of sympathy for what’s happened in Spain the last couple of days. Terrifying for the people that live in that area.

They're not leaving their homes solely because of that, as per above, other geopolitical matters are more pressing (for now, anyway).

What I think is (again repeating myself) that if nations actually take the time to address those root geopolitical issues, then this whole matter becomes much less of one.

Or we keep going as we are, and again have the choice between the status quo and the risk that may entail, or abandoning a great many innocent human beings (because how can someone know who is some kind of threat before they actually demonstrate it) to their fate.

I think it’s incredibly naive to think everyone entering western countries is at risk or fleeing war etc…

And I don’t think you allow mass numbers of people in to a country that will include threats and a culture clash just because some of them are ok.

The priority should be the safety of the British people from our perspective and if that means blocking some innocent people in to the country for our greater good than so be it.

The crime rates for some nationalities v the national average or against other groups cannot be ignored. Just because some people from those countries are good citizens doesn’t mean you should take risks.

If that's where you come out and the fate of at least some people who did nothing wrong other than being born in the "wrong place" is no nevermind to you then so be it - that's between you and your conscience.

However, and I'm repeating myself here, why is it so difficult to look at the matters that make that choice necessary in the first place and not go at least some way towards addressing them?

Yes, it wouldn't be easy, but that's the only way that this debate gets settled - short of a catastrophic population crash.

Just the other day a man from South Sudan entering a primary school grounds with weapons. Why the **** is he here?

Exactly.

The argument is that someone else from Sudan wouldn’t do this so just let them all in. Where’s the risk analysis?

But there’s people in this country who did “nothing wrong” who have been victims of serious crime from people who ultimately shouldn’t be here. Some of the stories are frightening.

Any compassion for those people? Just because you favour one group v another doesn’t make you morally right.

We already have issues amongst our native population - why welcome more risks amongst an illegal population?

I think we're going round and round here tbh.

I'm not favouring one set of people over another, I'm advocating for a solution where migration is reduced a fair bit because there is much less reason to migrate.

Again, I fail to see why that's somehow problematic.

We have absolutely ZERO idea who these men are and what their background is. It’s terrifying and I don’t care what I’m called.

Human.

the Morocco/algeria/spain aspect is very valid and likely the reason for events.

the inclusion of Israel  -  you can’t just blame them for everything !  That is tinfoil hat stuff.

As it happens, there has been a pretty good discussion on the topic of migration not far back on this very thread.

Page 657/658 is where the meat of most of it happens.

Just goes to show how often such discussions crop up.

One of the issues is that when asylum is refused it appears that it takes so long to deport. Would be interesting to know the full facts without spin.

Posted this about a year ago, pretty sure it's still true:

Any argument about immigration control that doesn't include a workable plan to address the root causes of why it occurs now (and why there may well be much, much more in the future) is either well-meaning but ultimately massively ineffective, or flat-out accepting the death and suffering of a very large amount of human beings so long as the arguers "tribe" can go on living life in the comfort they now inhabit.

This still applies.
