“Grandson, in a football stadium, there are going to be some naughty words - many of which you won’t understand at the age of 10. If I hear you using any of them away from the stadium then [insert appropriate punishment that will resonate with a 10 year old]”.

 

Thats how it used to work, isn’t it?

 

I don’t personally sing that chant because I just don’t think it’s productive for getting people on the same page. There are a lot of, let’s say “fans of a certain age”, for whom that word is far more significant than anyone under the age of say 30.

 

Have a little browse of social media, go to a comedy gig or sit beside a group of young people in a pub and you’ll hear it very casually used. It’s lost its gravitas as a swear word in popular culture in the UK but there’s a whole chunk of our fan base still viewing it how it was used 20/30/40 years ago.
 

Funnily enough, they’re the ones out of sync with social norms, not the people singing it in a football stadium.

 

But, as I said, that doesn’t mean people should sing it if we’re trying to get as many people on the same page about this issue of Rudkin.

I tell my 9 year old he's only allowed to swear at the football, they say worst words to each other
