There wasn't just one single reason we won the league, but Kanté was the closest to it and it absolutely wouldn't have happened without him.

Rudkin's decision to give N'Golo a buyout clause in his contract - thus enabling Chelsea to sign him - was the first of many acts of sabotage.

We could have had a real crack at the Champions League in 16-17.

I firmly believe that not only did we give him the buy out clause it was done in some kind of pre-agreement with Chelsea and N'Golo's agent to prove to Chelsea he was up for the PL.

It was all a bit easy for it not to be for me.

I thought he was really dragging his heels about coming and would have preferred to go to Marseillle. His agent probably insisted on the clause because of that.

Chelsea couldn't activate the clause because they failed to qualify for the Champions League so they paid a bit more on top. If it was prearranged, the clause probably would have been open ended to let Chelsea get him.

I don't really blame him for having a £30m release clause for Kante. It was probably like yeah right whatever at the time. Vardy's was £25m I believe. Even for his agent to put that in at the time probably seemed laughable.

One of the finest defensive midfielders every to play. How did it go? 70% of the Earth is covered by water, the other 30% by Kante.

Averaged over 11.5 km per match, but he didn't just run or keep possession to keep up the distance stat, I think his combined tackles and interceptions rate is still one of the very best there's ever been. It was genuinely like having an extra player.

AI has put together this comparison, admittedly on that record breaking season, but it's not like he dipped much in later seasons....

The following table compares Kanté’s record-breaking 2015/16 rates with the current season's leading defensive contributors.

Player  Tackles per 90 Interceptions per 90 Combined Actions
N'Golo Kanté (2015/16) 4.70 4.20 8.90
3.30 1.60 4.90
3.00 0.90 3.90
1.80 1.00 2.80
1.10 0.80 1.90

I mean, it’s quite likely that without the clause he wouldn’t have signed in the first place which would have meant we wouldn’t have won the league at all. So on this occasion, and only this one occasion, Rudders probably did the best job he could have here.
