Can play pretty much across any of the front 4 positions so will offer a lot of versatility. Very good signing at this level and the things I have read about his leadership is very positive.

We need to massively improve the culture and professionalism within the squad, the signings of Chaplin, Ings and McCarthy will be a decent start.

As for the 3 years, I think it will be 2 years with an option for a further year subject to hitting certain performance targets

Out of interest why has he not renewed with Ipswich.

If he still has the same quality as he did in 22/23 and 23/24 you would think there would still be some use for him as a squad player for Ipswich.

For me Ipswich not being willing to renew is an indicator of him slowing down but it would be interesting to hear from someone who is more clued in on the Ipswich side of things.

Another contributer on here hit the nail on the head. Chappers is, in my opinion, a Champs level No 10. However Town want more than just that level for obvious reasons. That is why his contract was not renewed.

Town also have a policy of letting go players that are unlikely to feature very much. Look at Morsy last year. (Now there is a player out of contract at the moment. Old but might do a job in Div 1.)  Broadhead went to Wrexham. Woolfy to Swansea.

We could have offered him a contract then tried to sell but that is not the "town" way. Let him go with our best wishes to further his career.

Chappers will always be a legend to the Portman Road faithfull.

If we play you in one of the cups he will get a standing ovation from the crowd as he runs onto the pitch.

I would also mention that Ipswich have spent over £250 million on players since he joined, so its a different squad from the league one team he was playing at.

I'm massively worried by our business so far.

I don't think most people realise how bad we are at signing experienced players, since Jonny Evans (signed in 2018/19) we've not signed a single player over the age of 25 who's been successful for us. That's 8 seasons and so far we've basically signed 3 experienced players and a manager, all of whom are on the downslope of their career and we're supposed to believe that Leicester are going to arrest the slide, when we can't arrest our on slide?

I think Chaplin will buck this trend but Ings and McCarthy are only being signed because they're famous.

While we have spent a lot it is nowhere near £250m. We spent £130m on the year we went up with the Foxes.

Then we recooped £78m through sales (mostly Delap and Hutchinson) when we went down again. Then spent abt £40m last season.

So far this time we have spend £20m+ on a 21yo Brazillian forward. But we are told there are plenty more to come. We shall see.

From the season after Chaplin joined this is the amount (in euros) It was more about how the team has moved on since he joined, especially over the last three seasons as he started to play less.

26/27 - 41.80

25/26 - 62.25

24/25 - 152.59

23/24 - 5.67

22/23 - 2.48

Shows it well I think. But of course the headline numbers do not tell the whole story. So much of this is over so many years. You have to be a walking computer to get your head around it.

I believe we are still paying for Delap and he has been sold at a good profit a year ago which will also take time to be paid. It is all slightly mad.

At least you cant complain at what you paid for Chappers.

I think most of us are very aware of how poor most of our signings have been since we won The Prem tbf. experienced player's, or not. That's a major reason why we are, where we are.

It's also common knowledge, the hierarchy haven't got a clue, whether it's giving long overpaid contracts to poor/average player's, a business plan, Managerial appointments, the list is almost endless. This has been pointed out for some time now, by many many people.

There's not many managers of the Jock Wallace ilk these days they all seem obsessed with experience being the universal remedy for survival or promotion. Some times it works if they've been lucky enough to sign the right experience but when it fails, which  it often does it's a disaster for the club but the manager just gets back on the manager merry go round.

Whilst I agree with you, it’s possible that some of the  ‘motivational’ tactics and ‘punishments’ used in that era would have some players these days crying to the PFA. Especially the younger ones. It appears that the experienced modern day footballer is the only one with a balanced equilibrium!.

There’s the famous story of Brian Clough fining Larry Lloyd a week’s wages for not wearing a tie in a boiling hot airport in Tokyo. Could you imagine that happening nowadays?
