I keep reading criticism of selling youngsters, the academy generally, and the desire to play 4 or 5 youngsters this season…..might be me but suggests we are doing something right….. I think the criticism is we should be getting more. But we can’t because we are in league one. We are in league one because we are so badly run. It’s a fair criticism imo.

CornwallFox Posted 13 August Posted 13 August I'm highly doubtful about the £10m claim. They have no reason to pay that much. No tribunal would force them to pay that much. Anybody saying he's worth more... Based on what? He's done nothing. We went get that much and we shouldn't get that much. 1

Granted a lower level but he's broke through 18 months younger than Rice, technically he's miles ahead of where Rice was at that point and Rice was a reject of several bigger clubs. Another reason why Rice was a very odd initial comparison. But he probably won't be as good as Rice, no. But he's definitely got more potential so to suggest he'll definitely be nowhere near as good as him is pretty silly 1

He's on a pro contract for another 3 years so it's not going to a tribunal. He won the EFL apprentice of the year and played 20 games in the championship at 17 (in the most demanding position). So yeah, he's absolutely worth that 1

With Louis Page, he has the ability and drive to become something special, and I am upset with selling him cos in a couple of years time he will be worth a hell of a lot more dough. Making a profit is fine, but making a longer investment would be more beneficial. He reminds me of a very young Declan Rice. What a random comparison. Rice actually played as a CB when coming through at Chelsea by all accounts.

These rules aren’t relevant to clubs like Man Utd of course, but they can still manipulate the situation to their benefit. Later down the line we will buy one of their players for an over inflated fee. See the Maddison / Winks / Skipp deals as an example and also the many strange transfers between other clubs. 1

He's worth what we are willing to accept as a transfer fee as he on a pro contract. Nothing more to be said about it.

Potential is pretty hard to quantify so it's primarily subjective but I've just given you some like for like comparison at the same age (Page actress younger) as to why that might the case. He's got attributes that Rice will never have. I'm a massive fan of Rice, always have been, but he's largely exceeded his potential because he's improved on a technical level more than anyone thought. Unlike you, I've at least tried to quantify/give evidence to back up my claim, rather than just relying on the old 'because I said so'. Oh, and the point of potential is that is how good you *could* become, not how good you *will* become
Popular Post Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 14 August Popular Post Posted 14 August Also, and I cannot articulate this very well because I'm an idiot and it's based on nothing but a gut feeling - but I reckon if Page wasn't ours (and never had been, lets say) but was completely the same standard of player as he currently is – and we loaned him from A Big Club, he would absolutely get more game time here. 14

You can't articulate well because it's not logical, yet you're absolutely correct. Most clubs tend to take a very 'grass is greener' sort of look with youngsters. Not ready for you but somebody else's is 1

Great point made by a not so stupid idiot. Maybe the heirachy should see a pattern that top clubs are coming to our academy for our young guns! Fair play to the academy leads bring these youngsters in and developing into assets… just wish for more to grace Filbert Way.
Reg Vardy Posted 14 August Posted 14 August For Manchester City and United £10m is a gamble….it could (easily based on performances) be argued that Page is less of a risk…..but given £10m over buying some players £50m+ both clubs have signed and barely used, it will be part of their plans to sign the best prospects in the game….it maybe that £10m today turns into £50m tomorrow….low risk based on turnover

Players get inflated reputations just by being on the books of a Man City or Man Utd. They will get loaned out and many in Man City’s case are sold on for profit. Even if they don’t do particularly well, clubs will still dash to sign them based on big 6 reputation. The only way it could be a problem at all, would be if they signed Page, and he had a number of loans where he flopped so badly that nobody signed him (unlikely) and his contact ended. Even in that worst case, they can fall back on being a big 6 club who aren’t held to the same financial rules as the rest so it doesn’t matter. 1

Rice at 23 had just joined Arsenal, Anderson at 23 had just joined Man City to replace Rodri.
