Matt Piper

Matt Piper's ill-fated time at Sunderland has come to an end.

The midfielder's contract has been terminated by mutual consent and Piper has left the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland's chief executive said: "We would like to wish Matt all the very best for the future."

Piper, 24, has been plagued by injuries during his three-and-a-half-year stay at Sunderland, making just 29 appearances for the Black Cats, 15 of them as a substitute.

The former Leicester winger, a £3.5m signing, has had numerous operations while at the Stadium of Light, his latest being an ankle operation earlier this season.

Piper has played one game for Sunderland this season, against Cheltenham in the Carling Cup in September.

What's the point? He'd only be competing for a place with Lee Morris, both on the pitch and (more frequently) the treatment table.

I suspect his career is over. :(

Let's wish him well in whatever he decides to do in the future...

That's really sad.

Any news on whether he's retiring from footy? I'd like to hope that it's not the last we see of him, he showed a lot of potential while he was with us and it would be such a pity to see it unfulfilled.

Good luck Matty, in whatever path you take.

Give him a pay as you play deal, reckon that would suit both parties

An extremely injury prone player available for nothing?

Micky must be licking his lips.

But Micky took him on trial and turned him down!

So it looks pretty terminal for him...

What a shame, I had him down as part of Leicesters future along with Jon Ashton, Tommy Wright etc then it all went horribly wrong :(

Good Luck Pipes whatever happens, you'll go down in Leicester City history for scoring one of the last league goals at Filbert Street

it was actually THE last goal at filbo, such a shame for the lad, i'd still offer a trial to him though, it wouldn't cost us anything

he must be very unfit because Micky didn't consider him fit enough for a loan spell at Cov!!! and we all know how low his standards can be

And Coventry City are six points above us.

If he needs somewhere to train and see if he can get fit again, it can't do any harm to have him at the training ground. If he does make it you've got yourself a player.

We should give him a trial and if he impresses a pay as you play contract, he looked an outstanding prospect for us.

He never wanted to leave Leicester but the finacial situation made the club wanna sell.

I have no doubt in my mind that he would of gone on to be a star player for this club, we should give him the chance better than the shite we currently have.

i think the least he deserves is an opportunity to get fit with us, afterall, he's one of our own, and he may still have a career in him yet.

Sunderland have released Matt Piper after terminating his contract by mutual consent.

The 24-year-old was a £3.5 million capture from Leicester City back in 2002 but his stint on Wearside was ruined by injury problems.

The Black Cats have decided to cut their losses on the winger and he will be seeking new employers during the transfer window.

Although he underwent an ankle operation this season, he did appear against Cheltenham Town in the Carling Cup.

It is likely that he will bid to earn a move to a Coca-Cola League club, possibly by undergoing trials in the coming weeks.

The last ever actually :P

If we were in for him which i strongly doubt i think either a month to month contract or a pay as you play deal would be the best option for him but i just cant see it happening.
