Is it time...

... to let a few younger players like porter, Logan, O'Grady (from the start), Sheehan and maybe Dodds to get a chance in the team, after today's result i think its safe to say we're safe from relegation.

with reading coming next they'll get a stiff challenge with minimal consequences to a defeat.

OR would you wait a couple more game 1st.

No....

I think we have to win as many was we can. If we lose games towards the end of the season the positive momentum we are building could go out the window.

I would not be adverse to having one extra kid on the bench for a few games. Then maybe two for the last 2/3 games.

I could understand it if we had a load of players out of contract that'd be leaving at the end of the season...but we have a squad on long contracts that'll be here for a while hopefully so we should stick with it.

Try and infiltrate a few of the kids if we can, but not a mass overhaul of the first team squad.

People like O'Grady starting the odd game from here on in would be nice, as he's going to have a big influence next season I think.

thats more what i was thinking, him, logan and sheehan (if fit) in from the start, anyone else on the bench coming on.

probly dint explain it that well

Maybe give a few fringe players a chance, eg. Gerrbrand, Sheehan, Morris (when, if ever, fit), O'Grady and (dare I say it) Sylla...

Sounds good to me, and is it time to put Rab back in goal?

Just out of interest, can Reading win the league at our place?

Reading can wrap up the title at the Walkers if they win as they go on 94 points and Seffield United lose they can only get a total of 18 more points and therefore a maximum of 93 points.

Yes, i just heard that myself but it also depends on Leeds Messing up, and only Drawing or losing

Oh yes, just spotted now Leeds have a game in hand on Reading and Sheffield United.

Agreed with that.

We should wait. I think we are safe but our next 4 games are important as we play Reading, Norwich, Palace & Preston. All in and around the play-offs. This will really test how far we have progressed under Kelly all of these 4 teams need the points just as much as we do, so I would wait to see where we sit after these games are played. If the worst happens and we only get a couple of points from these games we may be pulled back into the relegation battle again.

I tend to agree, once we've seen the next four games out I think we'll have a real measure as to how far the team have progressed under RK. For the remaining 3 games after that it would be nice to see the likes of Sheehan and Morris get into the team (if fit), even if it's the last 20-30 mins.

Sheehan won't be fit for a while and has not even played at Reserves level for over a month so the only obvious candidates for a first team chance are Ashley Chambers and Louis Dodds.

Of the two I think that Chambers would cope best. I have seen him regularly in Reserves and Academy matches and think he is a exceptional athlete and stealthy finisher.

I don't think it matters at what level he plays, he would still be a threat.

But I seriously doubt that Kelly will even consider the idea. He's not been able to play Welsh enough and therefore the lad has gained little in terms of match fitness.

Indeed, it is not impossible that his club will recall him after the first 28 days of the loan period is up for one reason or another which would be a shame and, perhaps, an opportunity lost.

I certainly cannot imagine why he would wish to stay for the rest of the season without getting games so you cannot imagine, if he does stay, that Kelly will use reserve players in his place.

Also, Kelly is no tinkerer or risk taker.

He knows the youngsters inside out and won't need to see them at first team level to know their capabilities. People like Sylla, Tiatto and Hammond might get a bit more action after missing the business end of the season so far and O'Grady may be used more, but that'll be it, which is a pity.

Kelly has many qualities but exciting doesn't look like being one of them.

As I said in effect once before what he's done is tune the engine on Levein's car. Apart from the front, it's no better to look at but it works more efficiently.

I believe that a strong end to the season, using the players we are going to be using next season, is the way to go. As Cobbo says, perhaps give O'Grady a start, but I would like to see a winning end to the season, and the confidence to take that into next season, where hopefully we'll be pushing for promotion.

How much do Championship teams earn based on their league position at the end of the season?

It isn't like the Premiership so has no impact, its only going up, being in the play off's or relegated that matters.

We need to keep going on a good run though so we have the momentum for next season (we have seen the reverse apply, think Wycombe loss & then Bolton the next season).

Having a good finish is needed not only for player moral, but from a financial viewpoint it will encourage those current ST's who are wavering about renewing, to do so for another year.

Not to mention incoming players will be more attracted to a club that finished 14th in the previous season than one that finished 21st.

Definately, but I do think that Kelly should think about changing things around to give fringe players a chance. I don't mean wholesale changes but for example if we win a game but there are 1 or 2 players that perform badly in the match then he should think about dropping them and trying others once we are safe.

Perhaps give one or two youngsters (Chambers, Dodds, Gradel) a place on the bench at some point aswell before the end of the season just to encourage them for next season.

If he did tinker and took risks you would only lambast him if it didn't go right. So why fix something that isn't broken. Levein got slaughtered by you for changing things.

I'm not sure you can form such opinions of him coming from the circumstances we have been in. Now that safety has been almost assured I would think we will see a bit more of Kellys real style of play after the Reading game. Even more so next season when we start on an even keel again with other teams and he has had time to bring in a few players.

No matter what you say Babylon, Thracian will always find something against Kelly to criticise. Moan when we're winning, he even moans when we're winning... ;)

You may have read it as such but that comment about not being a tinkerer was not meant to be a criticism of Kelly in the context of what I said. It was merely an observation of how he is and therefore his likely approach.

Thankfully, my memory of what Levein did is fading fast but I do remember being most critical of the fact that he was loathe to change anything not even in the face of the most compelling evidence (like Sylla's poor form, Kisnorbo's ineptitude in midfield etc, and I wasn't the only one, it was an avalanche of criticism).

As for Kelly, the circumstances have changed and we need to develop our side and far better to do so from a position of strength.

I was at the Reserves tonight and spent a long period of time in conversation with a group of dedicated fans who travel miles to watch Leicester City home and away, first team and reserves.

Without any prompting from me they were calling for the use of a winger and for the sort of football which will put another 3000-5,000 on our gates (and for revised season tickety prices next season).

What on earth is wrong with being critical when we're winning?. I imagine Rob Kelly spends a good period of time when we've won refocusing the players and demanding that, no matter how well they did, that they focus on what they can do better.
