England vs Paraquay

What a poor game and a disgusting piece of management yet again by Sven the clown.

When Owen came off we just handed over the initiative and lost the plot. The first half was encouraging (though not as good as the pundits thought) but the second half was extremely worrying.

We were lucky to win because the opposition was so poor, and it will be the same again versus Trinidad. Like I said in another post, we'll beat these 2 teams and then qualify, but we'll get found out in the knockout stages.

Crouch was pretty useless, kept giving away needless free kicks by waving his arms all over the place. And yet people still think he's our secret weapon. I said he'd get found out at the world cup and he's not proved me wrong. Owen was anonymous too but at least he stuck to his mission of stretching their defenders and he would always be in and around the box. We caved as soon as Owen departed, but that's Sven's fault.

If this is a sign of what's to come, I dread to think what will happen when we face decent opposition.

PS Lampard and Gerrard cannot play together! Gerrard is a shadow of the player when he plays for England, it's time to drop Lampard and bring in Carrick so Gerrard can play his usual game.

It still went to an opponent who kindly did the scoring for us and virtually ended the afternoon's excitement.

was it really a great free kick looked to me like it was just placed on the penalty spot witha bit of pace on it!! you can't say it was an inch perfect pass as they did all the hard work for us!!

on one hand I am disgusted once again in Svens tactics and feel that the players may have been to confident in their own ability!!

on the other hand we got a win with not the best performance but it showed room for improvement and progression you want to develop and get better and better in the world cup each game you play and this is certainly possible!!

as for the ref he was shocking some bad yellow cards some shocking decisions for both sides seemed obvious that he new the rules but not the game and think it's a disgrace he stopped the players taking on water when it was 30oc!!!

Cant wait for the game, i'm just watching it at home with a couple of mates.

Pleased we've won but worried about the performance.

Nah. I'm not normally an optimist as far as England is concerned but this time the poor second half performance didn't lead to a ton of opposition chances and us being punished. Grinding out a couple of poor wins in the group stages is fine - just remember France in 1998.

And Beckham looks to be in fine, and sometimes inspirational, form. We could be doing better than I initially expected.

Seeing T&T and Sweden play today, I think it will be difficult to qualify from this group esp with our woeful performance. And that is with the 3 points from the first match! We just need a shock defeat by T&T or Sweden and we are in trouble!

Please can everyone stop being so focking pessimistic its annoying. Its the first game, and we won. Yes we didn't set the world alight, but it ultimately hasn't cost us anything and we're still top of the group.

You can say 'If we we're playing a good opposition we would have lost', but the fact is we weren't and that's all that matters.

My enthusiasm went when we brought off Owen for Downing - talk about sitting on a 1-0 lead! Downing was touted as a brilliant crosser but even if he is, you still need more than a lamp-post up front to feed off any knock-downs.

I completely gave up on us scoring again when Hargreaves came on - what the hell has he got on Eriksson? I just don't get his role in the scheme of things at all. Only my humble opinion but maybe someone other than SGE can enlighten me.

Well done Trinidad & Tobago though.

Not really. Two wins and we're through. We an even scrape through with a win, a draw and a defeat if the results go in certain ways..

Owen - Downing

Cole - Hargreaves

Sven did the same bloody defending of a 1-0 lead against Brazil and lost us the match. He did the same defending of a lead against France and lost us the match.

At what point does an idiot appreciate that it is a suicidal technique in international football? He got the three points today against inferior opposition that almost embarrased us.

I'm one of the most annoyingly positive people you could hope not to meet ... but the writing is on the wall that he simply hasn't learned from his mistakes and we will do this again this tournament.

We have an outstanding squad, if they played to potential. If we win anything it will be despite Sven Goran Eriksson.

Lighten up people for god's sake.

We won against a team that have beaten both Brazil and Argentina recently and who haven't lost against European opposition for some time.

Were we brilliant? - No

Did we win? - Yes

Do teams that win tournaments play at their peak throughout? - No

Can you switch off if you think it's a crock of shite? - Yes

Does it seem that everybody on here thinks they are better qualified than the England bench to make decisions during an international? - From where I'm sat reading it does.

And are they? - No, else they'd have all been in the frame to succeed Sven.

Couldn't agree more... I was about ready to punch the TV the man is so incompetent.

The FA should have lt him go to Chelsea last year, we would have been in a better position now. Toss.

So by that reasoning a fan can never question any managerial decision, because if we knew better then we'd actually be in football management ourselves? Ex-players like Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer, Ian Wright and Alan Hansen all lamented Eriksson's tactics, just like us fans are doing. Are their opinions invalid too because they've never been international managers?

Almost everybody thinks Hargreaves is useless - just because we're not international managers it doesn't mean we are wrong.

Sven has played defensive football in the last 2 tournaments after we've gone ahead, and every single time it's cost us. Leading 1-0 v Brazil, we sit on it and lose 2-1. Same against France 2 years later. It's arguable that we did the same against Portugal in the same tournament although Sven has the convenient excuse that Wayne Rooney got injured.

Today was a sign of things to come, I'd bet you money on it.

Yup.

No one woud like to be more positive...but I am getting old. I have seen tournaments come and go where we have excellent players, outstanding opportunities and yet we piss it all up against a wall because players drink too much pop or managers disappear up their own assholes.

In '74 Beckenbaur led a revolt in the changing room - 'No more' he said 'to your inept management' and led the resurgent Germans to victory from the second round onwards. Oh for a player with cojones like that in the English changing room...oh for a prospective manager with sense like that sitting on the bloody bench... :(

But if you've been to the Way in the last three seasons you should be used to that..

I'd rather we peak in a couple of weeks than peak now and go down hill from here.

Surely the aim should not be to "peak" in a small competition - but to enter it in fine fettle and proceed with the intention of capturing its prize? Argentina did not seem slow of the mark, nor Ecuador/Ivory Coast/Germany/Trinny&Tobago ... so how come 'we' are the only country trotting out the same ole same ole "We always start slowly"?

Because we always start slowly means we always finish with eggy on face. If eleven highly paid, world class professionals can not sustain 90 minutes of effort and committment then what the fock have we got?

Posted

we'll see in 3 weeks time which teams are in the final

maybe if we had an 18 team premiership our players would have more time to be a cohesive team for the first match r_blatter_vt.jpg hah

I would have thought you we're used to that.

And when people say we sat on a lead against Brazil, we got done in the 50th minute by a fluke. Ronaldinho got sent off 7 minutes later, and we certainly were not sitting back after that.

Against France we we're unlucky. Heskey didn't need to dive in and Gerrard played a poor pass back. We led for over 50 minutes until injury time, so sitting back didn't play that much of a part then.

We didn't get beat yesterday when we sat back so let Erikson do what he wants. He's far more qualified to do the job than I am, as well as every single other person on this board.

From Leicester City yes, but I expect more from a team that's supposed to be made up of:

World class players

Who've never been fitter at the start of a World Cup

Who had an extra week to prepare

Who were fielding their full first team bar one player

Who had ten players, I believe with Champions League experience.

Who are managed by some one with previous World Cup experience.

No one can justify that level of performance for me, inexcusable.

Correct, but most of the players would say that they have to improve, so at least they recognise that!

Regardless of the performance, we are still clear at the top of the group. Not many would have predicted that this time yesterday.

Although T&T played astonishingly well, I'd be amazed if they were able to repeat that performance against us. If we beat them, as we should, we are through to the 2nd round.

There is still plenty of time to get things right. Owen is a lot better than his dismal display yesterday showed. Maybe he's saving his shooting boots for games when it'll really matter.
