breadandcheese Posted 21 June 2006 Posted 21 June 2006 I thought Hargreaves had a good game. Dare I say, he should start alongside Gerrard in a 4-4-2 instead of Lampard. I guess now Sven is not faced with this difficult decision of actually having to drop one of his favourites, what with Owen's injury and the likely 4-5-1 we will play. Cole of the Joe variety was excellent las night, but I am still a little concerned with his ability to link up with Ashley Cole.. Anyway, well done to Hargreaves. He proved a lot of boo-boys wrong last night.
Strokes Posted 23 June 2006 Posted 23 June 2006 Which he did. Not IMO, but i will conceed he did better than both Lampard and Gerrard has done so far in the WC, i still expect a hell of a lot more from hargreaves if he is to make the first team, but he warrented his place in the squad i am happy to say.

I feel like a complete simpleton compared to rocket mans beautifully written poetic master-pieces.

dandannieldanok Posted 25 June 2006 Posted 25 June 2006 England 1 Ecuador 0 And another full 90 minutes from Owen Hargreaves, i think he played well again, what do you guys think now ? Did quite well but did lose the ball a few times, may be out of his depth in the next game though as he will be up against the likes of Ronaldo and Figo or Robben and Van Persie. All in all a steady performance.
Stevosevic Posted 26 June 2006 Posted 26 June 2006 Did quite well but did lose the ball a few times, may be out of his depth in the next game though as he will be up against the likes of Ronaldo and Figo or Robben and Van Persie. Luke_Leicester_Lad Posted 26 June 2006 Posted 26 June 2006 Owen Hargreaves is very underestimated. I think he played very well in the games that he has played in and hopefully some people will agree with me.
Cobbo Posted 26 June 2006 Posted 26 June 2006 I think the lad struggles getting the pace of a game when coming on as sub. Always seems steady when starting.
Molson Canadian Posted 27 June 2006 Author Posted 27 June 2006 From Skysports http://home.skysports.com/worldcup/article...light+at+chance Hargreaves delight at chance England utility man Owen Hargreaves has spoken of his delight to finally get the chance to play regularly at international level. The Bayern Munich star has previously struggled to win a place in Sven Goran Eriksson's side but a combination of injuries and changes in formation has allowed him the chance to play in the last two World Cup matches. Hargreaves is expected to keep his place in the side for the quarter final tie with Portugal on Saturday, with Eriksson set to stick with the team that narrowly saw off Ecuador. The Swedish tactician switched to a 4-5-1 formation for the second round match against the South Americans, meaning Hargreaves reverted to right back, and the 25-year-old insists he is happy wherever he plays. "It was brilliant to just get the opportunity to play 90 minutes against Sweden. It was in a position I was accustomed to and to get the opportunity to start again, even at full back, was a great opportunity as well," he said on Sky Sports News. "I enjoyed it. Whether playing at right back, in a holding role or on the left, I would just love the opportunity to perform in a game of this calibre. "We've played in different formations and all the formations have done relatively well. We can play with five in midfield or two up front. "It's up to the manager to decide and I'm sure we'll see in training tomorrow which direction we'd like to go but I think we're very flexible and can be very successful with both formations. "It's not about proving [myself] to anyone, I proved in the past to myself and all the people who know me well. "It's now just about receiving the opportunities and going out there and doing the business." After fairly unimpressive performances in reaching the last eight, The Three Lions renew their rivalry with Portugal in Gelsenkirchen at the weekend, a game that sees England face Luiz Felipe Scolari for the third successive quarter final in major competitions. Both previous occasions have ended with the Brazilian coach on the winning side, the last time being in Portugal in 2004, and despite still having painful memories of that evening, Hargreaves is adamant the game will have no impact on their next meeting. "It's been two years, a long time. Obviously the memory some of us footballers have is probably not a positive one but there's such a fine line between losing and winning and you saw it that evening," he continued. "We could have easily progressed with a bit of luck and I'm sure we'll have that in the back of our minds when we step out on the pitch on Saturday. "It's not just about Phil Scolari. I think about the success of our team and obviously we've got the whole nation backing us. The support has been one of a kind and to say to spite Scolari would not be the right phrase, we want to be successful and move on to the next stage. "We are one game away from the semi-final and that would be a great achievement. "Any game at this level is going to be very physical, there's great individual talent all across the pitch in both teams but it's going to be physical - it's part of football. "Look at our squad, we've got very talented players and very physical players as well. If it came down to a technical game we'd be well suited, the same with a physical game. "They're missing two very good players but sure have some great players to step in and do a job for them as well." Meanwhile, Hargreaves has played down the importance of England's performances in the early rounds of the tournament. With inexperienced teams such as Ivory Coast already out of the competition after playing exciting football, the versatile player believes England have done right to just ensure they pick up wins in the early rounds. "Things have gone well and we've got another opportunity on Saturday against Portugal and we would love to go out there and move on to the semis," he added. "I think the most important thing is to win our games and move on to the next round. When you look at the first games of the tournament, Ivory Coast looked amazing against Argentina but are sitting at home. "It's not about playing beautiful football, it's about being successful and we know what that's like, we have got players in big clubs. "You see some of the more inexperienced teams play beautiful football but haven't moved on. We've got great players and we'll continue to improve. We expect big things from ourselves as well. "I think when you look at the players we have, the expectation is not just to be at the World Cup but to win the World Cup. We're three games away from winning the World Cup, three 90 minutes. When you think in those terms, we're very close. "I think tiny little details will decide these games, they'll be very tight, not high scoring."
martyn Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 Haha, just read through this thread again. Owen Hargreaves>* That is all.
Molson Canadian Posted 2 July 2006 Author Posted 2 July 2006 i thought he was the best player on the pitch today... he is worthy of a first team spot for england
The People's Hero Posted 2 July 2006 Posted 2 July 2006 Hargreaves did actually impress me. After a couple of starts he did start to grow in to the roll. Just got better and better as the confidence built up. Well done to him - he always looked so out of his depth as a sub.
