Molson Canadian Posted 16 June 2006 Posted 16 June 2006 I just wanted to know why some english fans hate him so much? His Stats for Bayer Munich are great he has won alot of silverware with them and in my view he is a great player. I just dont understand why he is not liked by all England fans I mean just because he was born in Canada and plays for England because he is eligble because of his father's birth in England in my view does not mean he can not play for England. Infact Owen could have played for Wales, Canada or even Germany. I just want to know why some people dont like him i know there is a few people on this site who dont like him at all and i just wanted to know your views why. Owen Hargreaves Bundesliga Champion - 3 times Champions Leauge Champion - 1 time German Cup Champion- 1 time In 6 seasons with Fc Bayer Munich a total of 192 games in all competions for Bayer with 10 goals not bad at all for a DM i think.

He's awful.
Ricey Posted 16 June 2006 Posted 16 June 2006 He's awful. No he's not, he's juast not good enough to in the England team.
Foxes_Wizard_Striker Posted 16 June 2006 Posted 16 June 2006 He offers nothing special to the squad in my view. His role can be play by Carrick,Carragher and even Gerrard. But he is not only one who is medicore, likes of Jenas and Alan Smith are just same as him.Imagine if he is out and Defoe is in and we will have enough strikers
Thracian Posted 17 June 2006 Posted 17 June 2006 One goal in every 20 matches in a League which hardly compares in depth with the Premiership. What is there to be excited about?. And then his brief appearances for England - please explain what there is to remember?. I don't hate him. He's been totally inconsequential. Whether he's defensively competent or not I've no real idea but he hasn't looked it so far by a long way. It's only you starting this thread that has made me remember he is even in the England squad.
Phube Posted 17 June 2006 Posted 17 June 2006 Because if he is any good, Sven has never used him properly!!
Steven Posted 17 June 2006 Posted 17 June 2006 I don't hate him, he is just not International quality unless you are the Tinidad and Tobagos of this world.
Jay Posted 17 June 2006 Posted 17 June 2006 The thing is although I haven't really seen anything to encourage me he should be in the England squad but I don't think it helps playing in a league where we see little or no tv coverage, however he does play for one of the biggest clubs in Europe on a regular basis but IMO he is no better or worse than the likes of Phil Neville who managed to get over 50 caps for England!!
Ultra Posted 17 June 2006 Posted 17 June 2006 "Hate" is too strong a word. But I resent the way in which he has been constantly indulged by Sven. Any other player with a string of poor performances for England behind him would have been axed years ago (ask Emile Heskey). His presence in the squad is a reminder of the better players we have kicking their heels at home. (Jermain Defoe, for example). Every manager has his own "pet" player and Sven is no exception.
Deathside Posted 17 June 2006 Posted 17 June 2006 I am not an england fan Hate is too strong a word However I dislike Hargreaves for scoring the opening goal for Bryan Munchen against St Pauli in this years PFB Pokal (German FA Cup) Semi-Final
Molson Canadian Posted 17 June 2006 Author Posted 17 June 2006 so what about the fact that he has turned down deals to join manchester united, arsenal, newcastle, hotspurs just to name a few of premiership teams that have been interested in signing him?
Leicester Lass Posted 17 June 2006 Posted 17 June 2006 so what about the fact that he has turned down deals to join manchester united, arsenal, newcastle, hotspurs just to name a few of premiership teams that have been interested in signing him? What about it?? These teams being interested in him doesn't improve his peformances in an England shirt or indeed warrant his selection in an England squad.
Bert Posted 17 June 2006 Posted 17 June 2006 Maybe it's because he isn't English, He could've played for Canada, Germany, Wales or England, it's a privelage he chose us but it still doesn't hide the face that he isn't good enough. Or maybe that's the reason no one likes him.

It's because he's not very good. He bottles challenges and can only pass sideways.
Alexikokopops Posted 18 June 2006 Posted 18 June 2006 so what about the fact that he has turned down deals to join manchester united, arsenal, newcastle, hotspurs just to name a few of premiership teams that have been interested in signing him? He still plays poorly or England whether you like it or not. The fact of the matter is that all we really have to judge Hargreaves on are his England performances. He hasn't been performing yet is constantly indulged by Sven. There are better players who can play in his position.
Molson Canadian Posted 18 June 2006 Author Posted 18 June 2006 well those were some interesting comments... will have to wait too see if he will be in the next england squad after the world cup
Anish Posted 18 June 2006 Posted 18 June 2006 He's brilliant Well let's see him play in the next game when he's playing in his preferred position. He'll have no excuses if he performs badly and I'd like you to defend him if he does.

Ultra Posted 19 June 2006 Posted 19 June 2006 Barring injuries, he'll have to play out of his skin to displace Gerrard or Lampard. I wouldn't mind seeing this (the midfield as it stands isn't balanced), but can't see it happening.
Strokes Posted 19 June 2006 Posted 19 June 2006 And I'd like you to defend your earlier comments if he plays well. Which he won't.
martyn Posted 19 June 2006 Posted 19 June 2006 The hate for Hargreaves is pathetic and stems from the fact he plays abroad and we never see him. For England, he's barely had a chance apart from 20 minute cameos, mostly out of position. People won't remember but he was playing quite well around the time of the last World Cup before getting injured. I have a friend who supports Bayern, he says that Hargreaves was one of their top 3 performers last season, especially in the 2nd half when Demichelis was injured and he was restored to a central midfield role alongside Ballack. I'm not saying that he should play, but the vitriol pushed in his direction is ridiculous considering the circumstances. If I would criticise any squad pick, it's Jenas who offers absolutely nothing as an international midfielder. Even if you don't like Hargreaves, at least he is versatile.

Jenas is by far the most disgraceful pick in that squad, and Hargreaves probabley has a right to be in the squad as he is as you say versatile. Hargreaves may have done alright in the latter parts of the season ( however that fact Demichelis normally keeps him out is a sign he's not that good, as Demichelis really isnt all that ) but he is still not as technically gifted as Carrick and doesn't seem to close down players as quickly as he needs to in the DM postion, something Carragher does alot better. He may look alright in the Bundasliga, but thats not the league it used to be. Hargreaves problem is he is a jack of many trades and master of none, . On top of this he's first touch at times can be woeful, and he never really performes for England. Obviously the extent of the abuse he gets is not deserved, we love a scape goat in this country and it's fashionable to call Owen Hargreaves a duffer. It will take a blistering performance to changes peoples opinion.
The People's Hero Posted 20 June 2006 Posted 20 June 2006 I don't care how he plays for Bayern Munich, I care about how he plays for England. For a defensive midfielder, he's toothless in the tackle (when he does tackle), backs off rather than closes down and can only complete a pass if it's a sideways or backwards one. I don't hate him and I don't send any vitriol or bad feeling his way, he's just not good enough to play for England in my opinion. Anyway, he doesn't pick himself, Sven does. I'm sure that when he's picked he gives his all for the cause. We all would.
