Ric Flair Posted 8 January 2007 Posted 8 January 2007 I've no objection to older players like that - and like Sheringham, Berger etc but there's a world of difference between class players with a bit of age and the sort of journeymen we've signed. I'm not especially bothered about the rent-a-team aspects of all this, but I will be interested in the level of Mandaric's supposed commitment to developing Academy players. Lisa talks about balance and this takeover will represent probably the best opportunity we're ever likely to have to get the balance right. Genuinely good young players coming through in the company of genuinely talented and effective older heads. Despite my scepticism about the economics of it all I'm looking forward to the consequences on the field because it certainlty promises more excitement than we've had these last few years. The question I find hardest though is who should be manager?. Well said. Pompey weren't reknown for churning out good youngsters. Gary O'Neil is about the only youngster I can think of who's come from their academy and made it in the premiership. Before someone suggest Matt Taylor, he was signed from Luton aged about 19. Perhaps Portsmouth just haven't had a good enough batch of youngsters or coaches to develop them. Our academy is in the positions it's in at the minute through several years of hard work. I suspect that MM and whoever manages us will realise that and want to utilise it to the maximum. The big difference is that, it's a lot harder to break in to a premiership team as a youngster than it is at a lower level. And it's still hard to break in to a lower level club. If we do get in the premiership (getting well ahead of myself here) then i'll be very realistic about the prospects of seeing our club bringing 3 or 4 youngsters in to the first team per season. For that to happen then we'd have to have one of the best academy sides in the country and that's still very much un-proven.

Well I've been anti Kelly all along but it's beginning to look like he's going to get a chance,at least until the end of the season.I hope it works out for him,I'll be happy if we start playing some entertaining football particularly at home to raise the atmosphere a bit!

He's not MM's cup of tea at all. I think he'll get a chance, but I just can't see it being long term.
MBK Posted 8 January 2007 Posted 8 January 2007 I'm ready to splash out - Mandaric Milan Mandaric is looking to building on Leicester City's youthful foundations if, as expected, his takeover is completed in the next few days. by bill anderson The Serbian-American tycoon was very impressed with Robert Kelly's side in the 2-2 FA Cup third-round draw against Premiership Fulham on Saturday and hopes to make an impact as soon as possible. It was the second time Mandaric had watched City since launching his £25million takeover bid, and he said: "There are obviously a lot of good young players here, and they need a bit more experience to help them along. If everything goes well, it would be good to bring in that sort of experience for them. "The potential is there, and I just want to get this thing (the bid) done, then we can move forward." It was a better result than his other viewing - the 4-1 home defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in early December - but Mandaric said: "In the first half of that game, Leicester played well and I saw plenty of potential. "Of course, this was a better game and it was a very good match. They obviously have great spirit and a lot of ability, and they deserve to still be in the competition." Mandaric is prepared to sign as many players as possible in what is left of the transfer window, which means his arrival can hardly come quick enough. And there are promising signs that the lengthy process is nearing the end, not least that he was at Saturday's game, meeting and greeting shareholders and directors at the Walkers Stadium. It is understood that the board, having accepted, in principle, Mandaric's new terms, are now circulating shareholders with a recommendation that the deal should be agreed, and it could be completed over the next few days. There is a possibility of Mandaric being in control by the time City face Colchester in the Championship on Saturday, and certainly no later than the Cup replay with Fulham which takes place at Craven Cottage on Wednesday week. That would leave Kelly with just over two weeks to complete any transfer deals and City's new era will then definitely be under way. * Birmingham City's draw against Newcastle means the Blues' visit to the Walkers Stadium has been put back a day to Saturday, January 20 with a 5.15 kick-off with the match being shown live on Sky television.
Ultra Posted 8 January 2007 Posted 8 January 2007 Mandaric is infamous for not paying transfer fees in this division but he pays big wages to get older players to his club. At Pompey in 03, he had the likes of Paul Merson, Teddy Sherringham, Patrick Berger, Steve Stone and Tim Sherwood on board and they did the job to get them where they wanted to be, the Premiership! I`d settle for us in getting these types of players that can offer City something for now on short term deals as we need to get out of this division within 18 months. Lets hope Kelly has identified his targets and that by the time the deal goes through that they havent already moved on! Sheringham, Berger and Sherwood only joined Pompey AFTER they had been promoted. It would also take a bigger manager than Rob Kelly to attract experienced, "name" players to us.

Ric Flair Posted 8 January 2007 Posted 8 January 2007 Among others, yes. Doesn't mean RK would, though.. Kelly also was thrilled to get a player of 'Cadamarteri's' so called pedigree. Now, I don't want to take anything away from Danny as he did very well on saturday, but if Kelly thinks Cadamarteri is of good pedigree then the chances of him being capable of bringing in some big names is probably unlikely as you've already said. I can't see Kelly lasting too long under Mandaric.

I think he will be aiming a lot higher if he has funds available soon.

I didn't think Kelly would last 5 minutes but I've changed my mind,I think MM will keep him on a tight rein until the end of the season just to see how he does...lets face it with only loan deals or short term contracts likely he has nothing to lose!

How come? why no multi million pound signings?
lookwhaticando Posted 8 January 2007 Posted 8 January 2007 How come? why no multi million pound signings? There won't be many MM£-signings (is it a coincidence that Milan Mandaric and Multi-Million share initials? That's a topic for another day). If his record at Pompey is anything to go by, spending large on transfer fees isn't on the cards.
Sooper Steve's shin Posted 8 January 2007 Posted 8 January 2007 There won't be many MM£-signings (is it a coincidence that Milan Mandaric and Multi-Million share initials? That's a topic for another day). If his record at Pompey is anything to go by, spending large on transfer fees isn't on the cards. I agree. Apart from anything else, why splash out in this transfer window when there is very little we can meaningfully achieve this season? One or two loans to help keep us up is all I would expect, then re-assess at the end of this season. I don't think Mandaric would rock things too much by booting Kelly out at this stage but, ironically, once we are actually safe he may well look to change things for the longer term (unless RK ends this season - starting now - like we ended the last).

Walkers Wonderkid Posted 8 January 2007 Posted 8 January 2007 so should the takeover countdown begin?according to others it should be 3 -5 days?
SilverFox Posted 8 January 2007 Posted 8 January 2007 Strange - I thought that deal was Harry Redknapp's doing... It was indeed. Alex Ferguson suggested him to Harry.
Swedging Posted 8 January 2007 Posted 8 January 2007 Shrewd signings are his forte. Yakubu on loan from Maccabi Haifa. Well... What did 'Arry mean then when he said the Portsmouth squad he inherited 2nd time around was, "The worst ever seen in the premiership."?
Ajax Treesdown Posted 8 January 2007 Posted 8 January 2007 Strange - I thought that deal was Harry Redknapp's doing... I meant he funds shrewd signings and not big expensive ones (i.e £7m)

What did 'Arry mean then when he said the Portsmouth squad he inherited 2nd time around was, "The worst ever seen in the premiership."? He's not bald Posted 8 January 2007 Posted 8 January 2007 Wonder how much my ST is gonna cost me next season!...ummmm
