1 of our top 3 batsman must hit 3 figures and have plenty of partnerships of 50+ , this time we aint gonna be skittling them out for under 250 so our batsman must perform

That's an extremely bold claim.

Monty is the greater threat in terms of taking wickets but Giles is a decent bowler. Containing and frustrating. You can't play the top sides and take 4 or 5 strike bowlers. A balance is necessary.

I don't necessarily think the decision is the correct one... It's a close call.

Giles is the consistently decent, defensive, spin option. In this side, KP can provide an aggressive spin option. Giles is adequate with the bat and functional, no frills in the field. Dependable.

Panesaar is a dangerous bowler. He gives the ball a bit more air and his use of 'flight' isn't yet as good as Giles. Giles is wilier... Panesaar just bowls the odd peach of a delivery. His fielding and batting are pathetic.

Personally... I think I might still have played Panesaar. His form is arguably better. It just puts a hell of a workload on the likes of Hoggard etc if when the Aussies go after him.

This is the beauty of sport though... the 'correct' option will NEVER be known. I think Monty will get his chance anyway.

Errrrrrr no it's not.

After Panesar produced the best figures for a spinner (including Mr Warne et al) at Headingly (traditionally a spinners graveyard) those were the exact words Fletcher used.

Besides what competition does he have? Vettori and thats about it.

And just to back up my EXTREMELY BOLD STATEMENT

Monty - Number One in the World

Thanking you 'The Hero of the People'

Saying that anyone player is the best in the world is a very bold claim. How you can dispute that is beyond me.

It's not as black and white as you'd like to make it appear.

I'm not for a moment criticising Panesaar.. but I do believe he is slightly overrated and can certainly understand why in certain situations Giles would be picked instead of him.

Also, I took 4 wickets for 2 runs at Gills Green last season, I don't think Warne or Panesaar have ever done that so that must make ME the best in the world...

Seriously, it's nice to have a bit of a debate with someone who obviously does know their cricket. I'm not 100% in disagreement with you... I'm not saying Panesaar DEFINITELY isn't the best in the world.. in my opinion, he PROBABLY isn't.. it's just a VERY BOLD statement to say that HE DEFINITELY IS!

And when I start treating Fletcher's comments with anything but the contempt they generally deserve I'll know I've mellowed more than I really want to.:P

Obviously

But when you consider the greats that have played at Headingly it is a fantastic achievement. I wouldn't say he's overrated, when you consider some of the wickets he took against Pakistan (some of the best players of spin in the world). He had the wood on 3 of the best batsmen in the world and none of them ever looked comfortale against him.

Anyways lets hope Giles bowls aswell this time at the GABBA as he did last Ashes tour.

I'm not sure it's the spinners we need to be worrying about mate. I don't think Giles will let us down.

We need Harmison and Hoggard firing on all cylinders and putting in the overs.

Not sure we've got the right skipper either...

Still, let's see how we get on tonight..

I know, Harmy was absolute dros I dare say Saj Mahmood could have bowled better.

Hoggard did bowl pretty well with no reward to be fair.

I have my reservations about Mr Fred aswell, seems reactive rather than proactive.

Harmison did seem to have a bit of a mare. Only seen first hour though. Did Freddy bowl and what were his figures like?

Aye, they get everywhere. It's the ones at the proms that wave through Rule Britannia that really get my goat. And the people that turn up to wave them at Prince Charles in a non-activist manner. *Spits*.

Bitter, who?

I think the aussies will destroy us english. I feel it will be embarrassing :cry:

How do you think I feel. They (English cricket team) are not competitive. They were playing for the draw and got caught out! (In more ways than one)

however there are more important things

COME ON YOU MIGHTY FOXES

The ways things are going england will be very lucky to escape with a draw. They need to rescue their first innings and bat for atleast another day and a half.

But i feel The Aussies will win as our 1st days play was truly awful, and we won't be able to recover from such a poor start.
