Wycombe Fox Posted 29 November 2006 Posted 29 November 2006 What's the general opinion of what is wrong with City at the moment? Is it the players we've got in the club or is it the tactics being deployed by the management? We can't afford new players at the moment so could a management change do any better with what we've got? Being in exile on the Isle of Wight I don't get the chance to see us play very often so don't really feel qualified to comment. From this distance it appears a lot to do with tactics and lack of passion. I didn't say players because at times this season we've got ourselves into decent positions during games but have just pressed the self-destruct button i.e. take a lead then defend just like Sven G E did in Euro 2004.
Bert Posted 29 November 2006 Posted 29 November 2006 Tactics. We know the players are good enough as they have shown us, believe it or not. But they are playing under specific tactics, which just aren't working.
lildave3 Posted 29 November 2006 Posted 29 November 2006 I personally believe it is a mixture of both. A creative midfielder and a tall striker i think could make the difference, but so could different tactics.
Wycombe Fox Posted 29 November 2006 Author Posted 29 November 2006 I feel that I could have recorded a JB commentary in August and just repeated it for every game since with exception of the games against Southamton and Villa - the format would have been the same. Whenever I've read a newspaper report involving City the word 'poor' has crept in somewhere.
BartonFox Posted 29 November 2006 Posted 29 November 2006 Tim Davies and Andrew Taylor are to blame then Rob Kelly who is so far out of his depth it isn't funny.
Finnegan Posted 29 November 2006 Posted 29 November 2006 A little from column A, a little from column B. I think there are players in the squad that simply aren't good enough and others we are prone to over-hype. But I think generally, with a bit of patching it's the bones of a top-six side there somewhere. Tactically, I think we're lacking, but I don't think you have to be Oda Nobunaga to win the Championship. You need a motivator and that's something neither Levein, Kelly or Adams have been. We need a Strachan, an O'Neill, a Ferguson - someone to inspire a bit of fight.
MBK Posted 29 November 2006 Posted 29 November 2006 Listen this is crap, some players aren't up to it. RW is a big big problem. Central midfield there is mediocre competition. And despite whatever people say about Logan, he is good but you don't improve the young players by playing them all the time but giving time to rest and observe and learn. Get Hendo in, before Kelly names Dougie in goal!
Babylon Posted 29 November 2006 Posted 29 November 2006 It's both and that is pretty obvious. Anyone who says the players have proved they are good enough is living on a different planet!! It would be possible to be higher up the league with an inspirational manager, but to get one of those you either have to pay for them (which we can't). Or you are lucky and you stumble across one like Boothroyd at Watford or Davies at Preston.
gatesheadfox Posted 29 November 2006 Posted 29 November 2006 the players arent brilliant but which team in this league can say there's are? the difference is we play all of our mediocre players out of position and with negative tactics to boot. when kelly took over from levein the difference in play was that we were more confident and played players in their chosen position if possible. we now have more options in terms or wingers but would still rather play stearman or hughes on the wing
uncle_connolly Posted 29 November 2006 Posted 29 November 2006 in my opinion its a bit of both. I mean, I would never choose a fully fit Andy Welsh over a fully fit Levi Porter or keep using the 4-4-2 over and over, never trying a new formation or even think of including Andy Johnson in the 16 or play Josh Low instead of Momo Sylla. I never thought I would say the latter but then that moves me onto the players. I mean, the right wing is a choice of Momo Sylla or Josh Low and in this division both players are just incompetent. And others such as Alan Maybury are just not good enough for what we want.
jumbo mills Posted 29 November 2006 Posted 29 November 2006 they looked for the cheap option that is why they went with rk
breadandcheese Posted 29 November 2006 Posted 29 November 2006 Our midfield is possibly the weakest in the league (give or take one or two exceptions). That is the major problem in my eyes. It doesn't offer enough going forward and yet doesn't really do enough to protect the back four, either through retaining possession or forming an organised tackling midfield. I can't help feel that we have takeover paralysis. We didn't get anybody in on loan and the question is why not? Kelly spoke about getting loan players in a few weeks before. I don't believe you do that without having a little nod from the chief exec. Then the takeover bid comes in, everything shutsdown (with regards decision making for the football side) and there is no money available for a loan signing. There are teams in a lesser financial state loaning players, so I can't help feel that the board didn't want to sanction it during a takeover. We need our midfield strengthening desperately. Should we get 2 good midfielders in (a creative player and a defensive tackler) we will be OK. After all for this division, we have a decent forward line (albeit Fryatt is looking sh*te) and a decent group of defenders.
Thracian Posted 29 November 2006 Posted 29 November 2006 Kelly chooses the players and the tactics. As far as players are concerned Alan Maybury is a good example from last night. He is a perfectly competent right back for this division. But he is about as suited to being left back as Levi Porter is to heavyweight boxing. Danny Tiatto was the option as left-back last night. It wasn't complicated. That would have retained balance there and avoided another problem ... two non creators in midfield. Instead of picking balanced teams, Kelly seems to want to find places for certain people even if they're unsuited to either the position or the requirements of the team. In a nutshell that's his major failing.
Babylon Posted 29 November 2006 Posted 29 November 2006 Kelly chooses the players and the tactics.eam. In a nutshell that's his major failing. Did Kelly Choose every player at the club then?
Thracian Posted 29 November 2006 Posted 29 November 2006 Did Kelly Choose every player at the club then? No but he chooses whether to pick them for his team. And he's certainly had long enough to sort out the squad he wants by now.
Babylon Posted 29 November 2006 Posted 29 November 2006 No but he chooses whether to pick them for his team. And he's certainly had long enough to sort out the squad he wants by now. Oh yeah, I forgot that with unlimited funds he has had he should have bought a new bunch to replace all the crap.
The People's Hero Posted 29 November 2006 Posted 29 November 2006 Seems to me you can gain immunity from criticism by not spending money. If I was appointed boss tomorrow and just fannied about and gave patronising, generic, tired excuses following one gutless loss after another, would that be good enough? My get out would always be I had no money. My point is, RK knows he has his excuse sorted out. In his mind then, perhaps he feels what he is doing is good enough. In my mind, it isn't. That's my plan anyway, be appointed manager at LCFC, makes us even worse whilst refusing to spend a penny. As I'd not spent any money, I'd be immune from criticism.
Manwell Pablo Posted 29 November 2006 Posted 29 November 2006 Oh yeah, I forgot that with unlimited funds he has had he should have bought a new bunch to replace all the crap. You forget, Thracian believes we actually have some good players at this club. Silly boy.
Babylon Posted 29 November 2006 Posted 29 November 2006 Seems to me you can gain immunity from criticism by not spending money. Not at all, as I said earlier it is a case of poor players, poor tactics and poor team selection. But to suggest, as Thracian was, that he is to blame about the shitness of the squad it ridiculous. He has made poor decisions in the transfer market. But his additions probably only make up a 1/4 of the squad at most. If other people don't want to buy the likes of Sylla, Hughes, Maybury, Hammond etc what can you do?? People can rant on about how great the youth team or their manager would be if they got a chance. But there is as much to back that up as there is me saying we would lose each game 5-0 playing youth players.
Lord Nibblington Posted 29 November 2006 Posted 29 November 2006 The Tactics are often poor. The Players are often poor. When you put the two together, we end up being very very poor. There is often the age old excuse of money. But there are quite a few teams above us with no money. So it's not an excuse. The simple fact is we don't make use of what we have, in any way shape or form. So it's no suprise that we end up looking utterly clueless.
Daggers Posted 29 November 2006 Posted 29 November 2006 The Tactics are often poor. The Players are often poor. slight correction
Lord Nibblington Posted 29 November 2006 Posted 29 November 2006 slight correction Well. I was trying to look at it positively, but, err... good point, well made!
Thracian Posted 29 November 2006 Posted 29 November 2006 Oh yeah, I forgot that with unlimited funds he has had he should have bought a new bunch to replace all the crap. Sorry Babylon. Much as I would like to make endless excuses for the guy I have rarely agreed with his choice of team from what he has got. I've not been impressed with the players he brought in - even for free - and I am quite sure there are charismatic managers out there who would have made more of the choices available.

What has that got to do with the price of cheese. You made out the squad is his fault and he has had the time and resources to do it his way. He hasn't end of... doesn't mean he hasn't sent out a team with shit tactics, signed poor players. But that wasn't the argument.
Wils Posted 29 November 2006 Posted 29 November 2006 Tactics. Rob's tactics last night were stupid, taking Hume of for Fryatt when Hammond wasnt doing nothing and Hume looked our only threat.
