Fez of Mahrez Posted 10 February 2007 Posted 10 February 2007 Exciting innit? Slightly nervous as well. Just found out my favourite band released three mini-albums before they made it big with their major label debut. I remember when I bought the Arctic Monkeys album, had only heard half the songs on it and was blown away by every song (apart from Vampires, which I've never liked). I never listen to it anymore cos of the blasted over-exposure but I'll never forget that first listen. Virtually a year to the day. What album has impressed you most on first listen? And do you still listen to it?

Craig Posted 10 February 2007 Posted 10 February 2007 Arctic Monkeys, without a doubt. I remember waiting down Tesco from 7.30 until it opened at 8 for it, even though i'd already downloaded it The first listen in the car on the way to uni though, immense.

Flynny Posted 11 February 2007 Posted 11 February 2007 There's very few albums I completely love on first listen, and of those I'll tend to tire of half of them. The ones that you love at first listen but then sustain your interest with something more underneath are rare albums indeed. Radiohead's 'The Bends' was one. Not their best album, but easier going. The Young Knive's 'Voices of Animals and Men' is proper good, too. Uhh... gotta be more. Oh M83's 'Dead Cities, Red Seas and Lost Ghosts'. Death From Above 1979's 'You're a woman, I'm a Machine' 'Absolution' from Muse, I guess, too. EDIT: Just thought, 'Turn on the Bright Lights' By Interpol and 'Mezzanine' by Massive Attack. Both proper mellow.
Filbert_Ross Posted 11 February 2007 Posted 11 February 2007 ill add the long blondes- someone to drive you home

Smashing Pumpkins - Gish Tad - Gods Balls A Guy Called Gerald - Black Street Technology They all blew me away on first listen
OBO Posted 12 February 2007 Posted 12 February 2007 The Haunted - Made Me Do It - Too right I still listen to it Rated (by me) as the best metal album of all time Better than Slaughter of the Soul?! At The Gates are untouchable as far as that style goes IMO Some love at first sounds for me: Death Cab For Cutie - The Photo Album Gorilla Biscuits - Start Today Aganst Me! - Reinventing Axl Rose Oasis - (What's The Story) Morning Glory? Count Me Out - Permanent Ghostace Killah - Supreme Clientelle (Not my favourite Wu solo, but the one that hit me hardest on first listen) The Get Up Kids - Something To Write Home About I still put them all on occasionally.
act smiley Posted 13 February 2007 Posted 13 February 2007 5 is a nice number to use: Sigur Ros - (), all weird noises might not sound like something with a lot of impact, but when I first got it, I slapped the headphones on and watching the sun set over Cardiff, it just made perfect sense. Adequate Seven - Here on Earth. At the other end of the scale, something with the impact of a car crash. Catchy tunes and a bucketload of energy, sure Now Its Time is a bit of a grower, but other than that its all rather immediate and it lasts too. kent - Hagnesta Hill. Their other albums would do too, but Hagnesta Hill has the least growers and was the first one I got after hearing 747. Start to finish its enjoyable no matter how much I hear it. The Cardigans - Gran Turismo. When I heard this, I finally realised why the word "lush" existed. Junk of the Hearts is poor but other than that, top stuff. Muse - Absolution. Very "in your face", but very much something I like and when its all new, the over-the-topness doesn't get a chance to register.

Other albums you would adore IMHO are:- * Radiohead : Kid A * David Sylvian : Dead Bees On A Cake * Lucky Pierre : Dip * Irresistible Force : It's Tomorrow Already * The Cure : Disintegration * Miles Davis : Kind Of Blue

Anyway, some of my favourite first listens: Hope Of The States - The Lost Riots and Left The Research - Breaking Up We Are Scientists - With Love And Squalor Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Yr. Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven

Daggers Posted 13 February 2007 Posted 13 February 2007 Way too many to list but Screamadelica ~ Primal Scream is near the top

Other albums you would adore IMHO are:- * Radiohead : Kid A * David Sylvian : Dead Bees On A Cake * Lucky Pierre : Dip * Irresistible Force : It's Tomorrow Already * The Cure : Disintegration * Miles Davis : Kind Of Blue Agree on Kid A - amazing album but not quite Love at First Sound - although to be honest some of my best albums are ones that I DIDN'T love straight way, the more challenging ones that need a fair few listens to get into (hmm, maybe I should start a thread...) Anyway I'll try out some of those other reccomendations, some more from me though: Buena Vista Social Club - Beuna Vista Social club The Roots - Things Fall Apart LTJ Bukem - Logical Progression Roots Manuva - Brand New Second Hand Blackalicious - Blazing Arrow

Yeah, Kid A is the precise opposite of 'love at first sound'. It's the biggest 'grower' I've ever heard.
Libertine Posted 13 February 2007 Posted 13 February 2007 I liked Kid A a lot at first. And I love it even more now.

Buena Vista Social Club ?? - is that Ry Cooder's band???
