MBK Posted 19 March 2007 Share Posted 19 March 2007 City boss Rob Kelly was left scratching his head today after the Irish FA invoked the FIFA five-day ruling to prevent Gareth McAuley from possibly taking to the field against Stoke City on Saturday, March 31. McAuley was forced to miss last weekend's Championship clash against QPR after picking up a hamstring injury in training prior to the game. The knock came as a massive blow to the defender, who has been in fine for the Foxes. In fact the player had hoped that his recent run of 10 consecutive games, which included a brace of goals at Ipswich last month, would help to win him a recall to the national set up. But after the injury was fully diagnosed by the City medical team it was decided that there would be no way that McAuley could feature in either of the games for his country, which take place on March 24 and 28. Kelly took the relevant steps and informed the Irish FA that the player would be unavailable, but after a further conversation with Northen Ireland boss Lawrie Sanchez it became apparent that the ruling would be enforced. Kelly said: "Gareth tweaked his hamstring on Thursday ahead of the game against QPR and we were forced to leave him out. That was disappointing. "We were hopeful that he would be available for our game against Stoke, but the disappointing thing from our point of view is that the Irish FA have invoked the five-day ruling. "We have told them that we are quite happy for Gareth to travel over so they can have a proper look at him and assess the injury for themselves. We are certainly not trying to do anything underhand here. He would obviously have played for us on Saturday against QPR had he not been genuinely injured. "But they have told us that if he is not available for the internationals then he will not be available for our game against Stoke. "I have spoken to their manager, but in the end there is nothing I can do about it. You would hope that a bit of common sense would come into it, but that is what they have decided to do. "My only hope is that if that's the case then we are treated just as everyone else would be - not just because we are Leicester in the Championship. "Gareth is as honest as the day is long and he has got a genuine injury. "At the moment he would be touch and go for the Stoke game - just as he would be touch and go if Northern Ireland's game was in a fortnight. "As we stand today he is not fit and we are quite happy for him to be tested by the Irish FA. "The lad is actually going to the game anyway to support his nation. "But they are saying if he is not available for us then he is not going to be available for you three days later. "It's a strange world we live in. Sometimes common sense is rarely common." Meanwhile, fellow City centre half Patrick Kisnorbo jetted off to Australia to meet up with his international team-mates today ahead of their international against China. Thats a slightly daft view, he's got an injury that has ruled him out for two weeks which means he can't play for Ireland, however he may be touch and go for our game five days later. It's not like we're going to be playing him the next day and we've allowed their physio team to look at him and they haven't even bothred.
