Leicester Gay Pride Cancelled

Leicester gay pride festival (June 23, 2007) has been cancelled this year due to lack of funds.

It’s the first time that the event, which has been running for seven years, has cancelled. According to festival director Corin Desborough, the event attracts nearly 10, 000 visitors.

Although this year’s festivities have been cancelled, Desborough is hopeful that they will be able to revive the event for 2008. She insisted that Leicester pride is not bankrupt.

“We've had some difficulty raising funds,†Corin Desborough, festival director, told the Leicester Mercury.

“It's not a funding crisis - we have got money and we're not bankrupt.â€

"We could not guarantee being able to stage a festival of the same size this year. It's not unprecedented that events, every now and then, have to take a year out.â€

"The festival is entirely run by volunteers and we've lost some key committee members who have moved on, so we are down in terms of expertise.â€

"We are very disappointed but not too downhearted because we are doing the sensible thing by taking a much longer run at 2008."

Leicester pride is seeking sponsors and volunteers for next year events.

Although the festival does receive some financial support from the Leicester council, the amount is not enough to support a full blown festival.

Despite the lack of official festivities, some venues around the city still will mark June 23rd with pride events. Click here for a guide to gay Leicester.

 They don't like people making fun of them but they don't half flaunt it do they

Good.

The whole idea of 'gay pride' is ridiculous. Not only should homosexuals treat their sexuality as a matter of fact rather than something to flaunt if want to be treated the same as others, but getting your todger covered in poo is hardly a reason to hang out the bunting.

I'm being slightly more forthright about that than is probably fair but I'm tired and its late.

Look at it as more of a continuation..............

I'm also listening to the soundtrack of possibly the most homosexual film ever, Top Gun.

People, lock up your sons.

Pride was allowed to wither and die by the present regime at the City Council, many of whom refuse to admit that the lesbian and gay community make a significant contribution to the economic and social well-being of this city.

But the administration that emerges after this week's elections is likely to bring it back for next year.

When that happens, remember you read it here first!

Imagine the uproar if people were taking the piss out of asians/blacks instead of gay people.

Very true, although it depends on the nature of which the piss take was!!!

Surprising thing to say for one who was not above taking the piss with homosexual innuendo...

But, as far as I'm aware people take the piss out of everyone, including themselves, just as they always did.

All the legislation, political correctness, social manipulating and threats of tough action, won't make the slightest bit of difference to whether it's done - only to whether the jokes and whispered or shouted.

People tell jokes about wives, mothers-in-law, husbands, visits to doctors, pregnancy, homosexuals, bi-sexuals, lesbians, blacks, whites, asians, the English, the Irish, the Martians, soldiers, sailors, airmen, and anything else that is likely to draw a laugh.

If people take themselves so seriously as to be bothered about it then it's a poor do.

There are far more important things to put right in our world rather than worrying about a bit a mickey taking.

Did I say it was wrong? I'm merely pointing out LOTS of people on here would be quick to moan if these were racial jokes. People would be labeled racist quicker than you can say "Andy King". Personally I think everyone is fair game for a quick ribbing no matter what colour/race/sexuality they are, my post was to point out the double standards of some.
