potter3 Posted 25 June 2007 Posted 25 June 2007 Neil Warnock claims he would be a better choice than Sven Goran Eriksson to be Manchester City's new manager. Eriksson is tipped to be Stuart Pearce's successor at the City of Manchester Stadium once Thaksin Shinawatra completes his takeover of the club. There has been a mixed reaction to the impending appointment of the former England coach, who boasts a club CV few can match. But Warnock, who left relegated Sheffield United at the end of last season, feels he would be capable of performing a better job at City than the Swede.......... From SkySports
davieG Posted 25 June 2007 Posted 25 June 2007 Yes, but isn't that why he left Sheff U in the first place - he thought clubs would be falling over themselves to take him on, how wrong could he have been?
Gené and Tonic Posted 25 June 2007 Posted 25 June 2007 Well he didn't actually say 'I'd do better than Sven' He was aked it and sort of laughed it off whilst saying yes.
Manwell Pablo Posted 25 June 2007 Posted 25 June 2007 Yes, but isn't that why he left Sheff U in the first place - he thought clubs would be falling over themselves to take him on, how wrong could he have been? No, I believe he got sacked. EDIT: It appears he resignd, although I do remember the board saying something along the lines of them thinking Neil Warnock wasn't the best person to take the club forward at the time?

They said that shortly after he left. Not exactly the pat on the back he was hoping for, I shouldn't wonder.

Sure Neil. i think anyone who thought he would of been the man we should of appointed only needs to read that article. his sanity ( or lack of it) is clearly on display for us all to see..
Craig Posted 25 June 2007 Posted 25 June 2007 Which manager wouldn't do a better job than Sven??? Steve McClaren.
Stevosevic Posted 25 June 2007 Posted 25 June 2007 Which manager wouldn't do a better job than Sven??? No doubt Sven is a good club manager, there is a reason why he got the England job in the first place.
Raj Posted 25 June 2007 Posted 25 June 2007 No doubt Sven is a good club manager, there is a reason why he got the England job in the first place. And that reason being??????
dandannieldanok Posted 25 June 2007 Posted 25 June 2007 Sven is a good manager, he was good for England despite all the bashing he received.
Raj Posted 25 June 2007 Posted 25 June 2007 Sven is a good manager, he was good for England despite all the bashing he received. Please....you ARE joking right???
potter3 Posted 25 June 2007 Author Posted 25 June 2007 Which manager wouldn't do a better job than Sven??? Not a lot to be honest
dandannieldanok Posted 25 June 2007 Posted 25 June 2007 Please....you ARE joking right??? Not at all, look at the shite we are suffering under McClaren, I can't see the current England set-up reaching the Euro's never mind doing well in them.
potter3 Posted 25 June 2007 Author Posted 25 June 2007 Please....you ARE joking right??? No, he lost only four (FOUR!!!) competitive matches during a 5 (?) year tenure. And only one of them was a esult to get angry abnout to be honest. Brazil - We lost 2-1, to the eventual winners, and to an arguably flukey Ronaldinho free kick Portugal '04 - We should have gone through with Sol Campbell's disallowed hearder, and only went out on Penalties Northen Ireland - No excuses Portugal 06' - Although he made some mistakes, we play a large part f the game with 10 men, and only went out on penalties, again. And he was a very good club manager, he's won a lot, includoing Lazio's only ever Italian League title: 1979-82: IFK Gothenburg Swedish Cup Winners 1979 Swedish League Champions 1981 Swedish League Champions 1982 UEFA Cup Winners 1982 1982-84: SL Benfica Portuguese League Champions 1983 Portuguese League Champions 1984 Portuguese Cup Winners 1983 1984-87: AS Roma Italian Cup Winners 1986 1987-89: AC Fiorentina 1989-92: SL Benfica Portuguese League Champions 1991 1992-97: Sampdoria UC Italian Cup Winners 1994 1997-2000: SS Lazio Italian Cup Winners 1998 Italian Super Cup Winners 1998 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup Winners 1999 UEFA Super Cup Winners 1999 Italian League Champions 2000 and it doesn't say it on there, but he took some Swedish side (Degerfors, or something) from the thrid divion to the first in three years. And he is the only manager to complete a double in three different countries
Raj Posted 25 June 2007 Posted 25 June 2007 Not at all, look at the shite we are suffering under McClaren, I can't see the current England set-up reaching the Euro's never mind doing well in them. Agree that McClaren could be even worse. BUT you cant say Sven did well for England? Considering the players at Englands disposal any half decent manager would do well with them....surely?
Joe. Posted 25 June 2007 Posted 25 June 2007 There's no denying Sven is a good manager at club level. He's done very well wherever he's been and I would expect him to do fairly well at Man City if he's given the right sort of financial backing which he's bound to have.
dandannieldanok Posted 25 June 2007 Posted 25 June 2007 BUT you cant say Sven did well for England?Considering the players at Englands disposal any half decent manager would do well with them....surely? Read Potter's post who makes an excellent point. And to be honest, Sven was playing the likes of Barmby when we beat Germany 5-1, McClaren has better players at his disposal.
Raj Posted 25 June 2007 Posted 25 June 2007 I understand Sven has a good record at Club record...but it was along time ago. Perhaps things have changed since then? I just can't see mangers like Sven and McClaren being able to motivate players at that level? Im probably wrong I will be when Sven takes over Man City and propells them to Top 6 and McClaren wins the Euros!!!!
Thracian Posted 25 June 2007 Posted 25 June 2007 Good or not Sven makes a blank tombstone seem like a neon Coca Cola sign. Even when he's excited he's like a cardboard cut out... Perhaps that's what gives him his reputed sex appeal... Cardboard might be bland but at least it's rigid!. Imagine every club had a Sven for manager. It'd be like watching multiple Epilogues on match day. Okay Warnock's more Music Hall than marvellous football. But at least he reacts to pain and all the emotions of the day. With Eriksson he's not just cool as Arctic water. If he were granted one final wish before his own execution I'm sure it'd be for a serviette - to keep his suit clean while he quietly savoured his last meal.
The People's Hero Posted 25 June 2007 Posted 25 June 2007 Agree that McClaren could be even worse.BUT you cant say Sven did well for England? Considering the players at Englands disposal any half decent manager would do well with them....surely? Don't think you're considering the fact that every single player in the England squad is overrated.
Finnegan Posted 26 June 2007 Posted 26 June 2007 # Brazil - We lost 2-1, to the eventual winners, and to an arguably flukey Ronaldinho free kick# Portugal '04 - We should have gone through with Sol Campbell's disallowed hearder, and only went out on Penalties  fooking English. Will you ever give up? Ronaldinho's free kick was blinding, and deserved to win. Sol Campbell's "goal" would never have been given in the Premiership in a million years. You can't touch the goalkeepers these days, whether that's right or wrong, and Terry (I think it was) clearly did. The end. Get over it. Move on. Thankyouvermuchmate!
Ultra Posted 26 June 2007 Posted 26 June 2007 No, he lost only four (FOUR!!!) competitive matches during a 5 (?) year tenure. And only one of them was a result to get angry about to be honest. Actually we lost five. France beat us at Euro 04 with two Zidane goals in the last two minutes when we should really have killed the game off long before then. But in his later years good England performances were far outnumbered by crap ones. How many times, for example, did we play well in last year's World Cup? Given the talent at his disposal we underachieved big-time. And his mistakes with squad selection cost us dearly. He'd passed his sell-by date and the FA were right to get rid.
