Asha Posted 4 August 2007 Posted 4 August 2007 My great aunt is 99 this week. She still line dances and is fitter than Mark De Vries i swear! MM get it done!!!
Steven Posted 5 August 2007 Posted 5 August 2007 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/6921217.stm Should be Sir Harry Patch.
Finnegan Posted 5 August 2007 Posted 5 August 2007 Can I ask why he's legendary? He's old, he isn't a bigot and he fought in the war. I'm sure that can be said of other people.
Jay Posted 5 August 2007 Posted 5 August 2007 Can I ask why he's legendary? He's old, he isn't a bigot and he fought in the war. I'm sure that can be said of other people. not that many more now in terms of those that fought in the first world war, although imo anyone who saw action in ww1 or 2 deserves immense credit and legendary status in my book
Finnegan Posted 5 August 2007 Posted 5 August 2007 Right. So. He's the best bloke ever because he's lucky enough to still be alive?

Jay Posted 5 August 2007 Posted 5 August 2007 Right. So. He's the best bloke ever because he's lucky enough to still be alive? No I didn't say that!! all I was saying that what these old men did was pretty amazing in my book the conditions they survived were horrendous I have always asked my self that if called upon would I be able to do what they did and to be honest while I hope I would I don't know the answer! I didn't suggest that he was the best bloke ever or that he should be knighted but as a whole the effort these people put in should never be forgotten.
Jay Posted 5 August 2007 Posted 5 August 2007 Lots of Nazis... ok maybe I should have put allies in my post and then suddenly I'm a closet Nazi!!
Jay Posted 5 August 2007 Posted 5 August 2007 Clearly he meant for the good guys. if that makes you feel better to describe them that way then yes I did mean the good guys!!
Daggers Posted 5 August 2007 Posted 5 August 2007 ...but boy could they carry off a raincoat with panache
Phube Posted 5 August 2007 Author Posted 5 August 2007 Should be Sir Harry Patch. Totally agree (before he pegs it!!) Can I ask why he's legendary? He's old, he isn't a bigot and he fought in the war. I'm sure that can be said of other people. Many reasons: 1: He is the last surviving person (on either side) who fought in the trenches, 2: I saw him on the programme "The last Tommy" as few years ago, he was only 107 then!! And he is a top, top man. 3: He's done more for this country than anyone posting on here!! (In fact more than most people under the age of 75!) 4: He doesn't whinge and moan, even after all the attrocities that he has witnessed, which is a lot different to many of todays people!! 5: If he doesn't qualify as a legend, and mther people (like John Peel do!) then modern life really is rubbish!

I certainly agree with the guy's philosophy about warfare. It is an obscenity and simply another example of how the strong manipulate and abuse the weak.
Mort Posted 5 August 2007 Posted 5 August 2007 Nothing wrong with Rommel, couldn't compare him to certified war criminals like Hitler and Himmler. But yeah i take your point... just seeing action doesn't make you a "legend", I've got boundless respect for anyone who's fought for their country and risked their lives (and that goes for those out in Iraq and Afghanistan at the moment - even if I'm not convinced that they should be there in the first place), but at the same time their only doing their job, shouldnt detract from the respect i have for them though.
Rincewind Posted 5 August 2007 Posted 5 August 2007 I always thought you had to be dead to qualify for legendary status. Wikpedia Not read it all so the definition may have been updated.

Actually it was just a joke. I'll get me coat
Finnegan Posted 5 August 2007 Posted 5 August 2007 3: He's done more for this country than anyone posting on here!! (In fact more than most people under the age of 75!) See this is the bit I have a problem with. I've a lot of respect for the hardship he's endured and the horrors he's seen, and I pray I never have to see such woes, But he was presumably conscripted into service and had little choice about whether or not he stood all day in a trench getting shot at. What exactly did he do for his country? Compare his achievements to, say, Oskar Schindler and I maintain my point that this bloke's just lived a very, very long time. If you were British, male and his age then presumably you too saw service. It's a bit of a slight against the countless others who served and survived in WWI to call this man the best bloke ever, purely because he's lived to over a hundred. Do you not see the point I'm trying to make here?
Daggers Posted 6 August 2007 Posted 6 August 2007 Maybe we should change the title to: Best (equal) ever bloke along with everyone else that did the same things and lived [but not the ones that died in horrific agony and miserable conditions because that wouldn't be very telegenic] ?

Daggers Posted 6 August 2007 Posted 6 August 2007 Do it!! You appear to be confusing me with one of those power-crazy deleting-happy moderators that prowl the corridors of this fair forum
