EXCHANGE AND MART

Three games for Allen to save job Leicester 4 Watford 1

27/08/2007

If Martin Allen is going to get the bullet at Leicester he is determined to go out with all guns blazing.

The Foxes boss has launched a fierce defence of his position but it is unlikely to be enough to prevent Milan Mandaric wielding the axe.

Leicester laid on a sack race as half-time entertainment but Allen looks doomed to be the winner of the Championship - even after this thumping win over one of the promotion favourites.

Allen is understood to have been given only three more games by ambitious chairman Mandaric after a string of bust-ups only three months after his appointment.

Gary Megson and Glenn Roeder are contenders to replace the former Milton Keynes and Brentford boss and the man known as Mad Dog is clearly a Dead Dog Walking.

But Allen insists he will scrap for his job after going out 10 minutes before the start of Saturday's match to put on a public show of defiance.

He said: "I've gone out on the pitch before and I decided to do it again - because nothing is going to break me. Nothing.

"All the innuendo, bits and bobs and rubbishy stuff doesn't affect me. In my first game here I kept a low profile, but I thought it was about time I put my shoulders back and my chest out.

"I was proud to be the manager and walk into that centre circle. I stared at every corner of the ground and the response I got from the supporters was magnificent. They know now nothing will break me.

"I wanted all of our supporters to know I am fine and I am proud to stand in front of them wearing the Leicester City badge.

"I'm not going to hide away in a dark room and sneak into the dugout hoping nobody notices me. I'll lead from the front from the start to the finish."

Allen was dancing on the touchline on 15 minutes after a dazzling 25-yard strike from Iain Hume and the points were safe early in the second half after a sublime start totally stunned the Hornets.

Dj Campbell pounced after the excellent Stephen Clemence's free-kick was blocked. And Alan Sheehan rounded off a comfortable win with a heavily deflected 30-yard shot.

Mark De Vries struck from close range late on and Watford finally found the net in injury time through Marlon King's spot-kick after a foul by James Chambers.

It was a reality check for Aidy Boothroyd's Watford as they slipped to their first defeat since relegation from the Premiership.

Skipper Gavin Mahon said: "Maybe it's a good game to learn from, we are the team everyone wants to beat.

"We feel confident every time we go on to the pitch, but I don't think we were complacent.

"Maybe that shows we are not going to just turn up and turn teams over.

"We have had two good performances before this in the league. You are going to get setbacks, we have got two home games to come."

I suppose after continued speculation that there is no smoke without fire and I would like MM to come out and clear the air as soon as possible, or sack MA. Of course I wouldnt agree with the sacking but this limbo land crap will start to effect the players and thus our chances of a succesful league campaign. MM, sort it out!

It seems odd that Mandaric went out on a limb to poach a manager with passion, determination and agression only to apparently fall out with him so quickly. What did he expect? It's a winning combination of qualities but he's got to stand off, give him space and time and back him.

Blimey, if you do end up with the likes of Roeder - talk about from one extreme to another. Mind you, he does keep some very nice pens in his shirt breast pocket.

MM may have made what he thought was the right choice but he has been known to sack managers quite early in the past although many were interim of temporary managers. They have obviously clashed over transfers and my personal view is that its MA inability to bring in high profile players for the fans. He did that as Pompey got promoted by signing players like Patrick Berger, Steve Stone and Paul Merson who were still capable at that stage of there careers and I reckon MM has been focked off that MA said no to Fowler and Hasselbaink.

I think that MA is doing it the right way though. Far too many sides have gone for these aging players but MA has opted for pace and aggression with no pre-Madonnas. We seem like a lively fast team now who look hungry and even the one oldie that he did sign, Bruno N`Gotty, starts running up and down like Cafu did for Brazil!

I think this week will be another turbulent week for us as Leicester fans though. If MM sanctions the signing of players early in the week then we can be pretty confident that this is mostly rubbish as only an idiot will keep backing the managers judgment with his money and then sack him days later.

This story is hanging around too long for there to be nothing in it, despite all the wishfull thinking by the ostriches amongst us. If Mandaric were to sack Allen then dark clouds would begin to descend over Leicester City. Despite all the goodwill Mandaric has accumulated thus far, he would look like a meddling prat whose motives could never be trusted again.

This is only the second decent managerial appointment that he has (potentially) ever made in his life. So, not only would he not be trusted anymore, his judgement would be the laughing stock of the football world.........and only the likes of failures such as Glenn Roeder would be happy to work under him.

I just hope we haven't got another Ken Bates pitched up here because the signs aren't looking good.

Berger didn't join until they were in the premiership for their first season, but apart from that i agree with every word. Mandaric has been trying to get a high profile name since he's been here.

He does seem to be a manager who will go for youth. On reflection with Allen's time at the Dons, he did get us 5 inspired signings O'Hanlon, Andrews, Dyer, McGovern and Knight, all of them 20 somethings with the last four ex-Championship players that should really still be playing there. Definitely Andrews should - he's a superb player.

After so far signing 10 players, Ince hasn't brought in any players with the same flair.

and the Mirror has rehashed the story again today!!

it makes me feel sick that Milan could sack a man who has reignited the passion in the players and fans I will be disgusted if he gets sacked and even more if he is replaced with a footballing non entity like Gary Megson or Glen Roeder!!

I think we should show Milan what we think at Forest tomorrow and sing Allens name loud and proud!!

MM does want to do things for the fans and he keeps mentioning us in every interview he seems to do but he must realize we don't want big named old timers who may end up injured or are just here for one last biggish payday and not give a toss. The main thing that has impressed me this season has been our pace at times when we break forward and the energy and willing to go on until the end of the game. I know that we have conceded two late goals already but that wasn't down to fitness as the lads always look stronger in the second half whilst our opponents weaken. You wont get that with a team of old stagers and I do wonder how sides like Cardiff will cope as the season progresses.

i'll be calling for milan's head if he sacks allen! Harry isn't a yes man, and he and milan got on perfectly, so well he hired him twice!

I thought Redknapp left due to a fallout with Mandaric...

"Despite apparent arguments over transfers and coaching positions with chairman Mandaric, Redknapp strengthened his squad over the summer of 2004, and restated his commitment to make Pompey an established Premiership side. However come 23 November 2004, following further disagreements with Mandaric, particularly over the appointment of Velimir Zajec as Director of Football, Redknapp & Jim Smith resigned with immediate effect."

He cant be a bad chairman though for Redknapp to have returned. You wouldn't hear of Gregory going back to work for Doug Ellis somewhere thats for sure. I dont think that MM is the devil either lol but its simply a case of MM wanting the very best for his club and maybe wanting to get involved as its his money and MA maybe standing his ground and not agreeing with MM or even agreeing to the sanction of moves such as the Hasselbaink one.

One thing though I heard from the Championship on Sunday, when Fowler was getting interviewed apparently the reporter asked him if he was aware that they sold over 3,000 shirts with his name on the back in one day. Thats arguably the type of the thing that MM wanted to happen with us had we signed a high-profile player and who knows, that type of signing may have put a few extra bums on seats for Blackpool and Watford. Once again, Im happy MA is doing it his way but we must see it from MM`s side too.

I don't blame Allen for not wanting to sign Fowler and Hasselbaink. It's no easier scoring goals in the Championship for a player that's past their best.

Agree, I can't go but those who are going please make it clear we want him to stay, Milan is known for listening to the fans!

It's good that you all want him to stay but putting things into perspective and being devils advocate for a minute he has only got one win so far and is busy whipping up as much support as possible some might say for his own cause.

so he should though, HES OUR MANAGER, he shouldnt have to if people got off his back!!! i know you were just making your point but can we not stick with a manager for once! youre not going to get instant success with new squad, chairman, manager, staff etc!

MA is on SSN now, he says there has been no riffs etc and things are fine, he also included getting some scout reports back today!!!!!!

Just seen the end of the interview. He's awesome, could listen to him all day, just his attitude and how is answers the questions! :worship:

I don't think Allen was whipping up support for himself - he was doing it to get the result. He is a motivator and Saturday showed he can motivate the crowd as well as the team. For me, that's part of his job and it worked well at the weekend. Long may it continue.

Ultimately, though, he is being employed by Mandaric to do a job and he will be judged by the team's results; if he fails on that score then it doesn't matter how well or otherwise he gets on with the fans. Milan Mandaric is a businessman, he has put money into this club with a view to making a profit and he knows that he will only get a return on his investment if we are successful.

Personally I think we have started the season reasonably well in terms of performances and results, but Mandaric sees the full picture rather than just the snapshot on matchday that we see. Given his track record at Portsmouth and elsewhere, I would trust Mandaric to do the right thing - if someone can get us better results then bring him in.

MM yes he is our saviour now it is time to step aside and give MA all the support needed to see LCFC in the prem again.

Sacking MA will not achieve anything not yet anyway and all this talk is just riddiculus. Give MA time and space to try and achieve something great.

Leicester manager Martin Allen has dismissed reports of a rift with chairman Milan Mandaric.

Speculation was rife that Allen's job was on the line ahead of the Foxes' emphatic 4-1 home win over Watford on Saturday, with Mandaric rumoured to be lining up former West Ham and Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder as his replacement.

There was a suggestion the pair had fallen out over the collapse of Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink's proposed move to the Walkers Stadium, despite Mandaric publicly backing his manager's decision not to sign the veteran striker amid concerns about his fitness.

Speaking ahead of the second-round Carling Cup clash against Midlands rivals Nottingham Forest on Tuesday, Allen told Sky Sports News: "There's no rift with him. Both of us have opinions but we just get on with our jobs, we don't let it effect us.

"He is a very clever man and I have learnt an awful lot from him already. We get on really well. I've taken training, we have watched the DVDs of Saturday's game and carried on as normal. I enjoy my job and I love coming into work every day.

"I don't know where these stories come from. But if I thought about things like that I would end up sat in a room banging my head against a wall."

Now can we get rid of the "Allen's going to get sacked" rumours? I know it's not as strong as MM denying them but still, it's something :)
