Manchester United favourite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has retired due to a knee injury, according to Sky Sports News.

Solskjaer will be forever remembered in United folklore for scoring the dramatic winner in the UEFA Champions League final against Bayern Munich in 1999.

That goal was one of almost 130 he scored for The Red Devils after joining from Molde in a £1.5million transfer 11 years ago.

He made over 360 appearances for the club, but recent seasons have been blighted by injury.

The 34-year-old did maintain a level of fitness last season, scoring 11 goals as United won the title and reached the FA Cup final.

But he did not figure during the pre-season campaign after undergoing a knee operation over the summer.

This was expected to be his final season as a player at Old Trafford, but he has now decided to announce his retirement.

Solskjaer's decision to quit could prompt Sir Alex Ferguson to rethink his attacking options prior to the close of the transfer window.

Along with Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez and Louis Saha, Solskjaer was expected to form part of Ferguson's plans up front.

But the United manager may now require further reinforcements in attack, having been linked with Bolton Wanderers' forward Nicolas Anelka.

From the BBC:

Striker Solskjaer set to retire

Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to announce his retirement from football on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old Norwegian has been plagued by a series of knee injuries.

Solskjaer, who scored the winner in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich in 1999, made several comebacks during the past four years.

He joined United from Molde for £1.5m in 1996 and the former Norway international has made 366 appearances for United, scoring 126 goals.

He also collected six league championship and two FA Cup medals with United.

Solskjaer scored 11 goals as the Red Devils reclaimed their Premier League crown last season.

His last game for Sir Alex Ferguson's side was the FA Cup final defeat to Chelsea on 19 May when he came on as an extra-time substitute at Wembley.

He has already spent time at United coaching young players and was appointed a club ambassador last year.

The retirement of Solskjaer leaves Ferguson with only three strikers - Wayne Rooney, Louis Saha and Carlos Tevez - the latter being the only one presently fully fit.

Ferguson has been linked with a move for Bolton's Nicolas Anelka and Spurs striker Dimitar Berbatov, although the latter has insisted his immediate future lies at White Hart Lane.

United have sold fellow strikers Alan Smith to Newcastle and Giuseppe Rossi to Villarreal.

Tevez has also been included in Argentina's squad for the friendly against Australia in Melbourne next month, which could further stretch Ferguson's resources.

Saha, whose own United career has been dogged by injury, had hoped to make his return against Spurs at the weekend but his comeback was aborted.

He is expected to be fit to face Sunderland at the weekend, but his persistent knee problems have proved a major cause of concern.

Solskjaer returned to fitness last term, and was hopeful of playing a meaningful role this season, despite undergoing minor knee surgery in June.

But he has had problems during his rehabilitation and recently admitted he fully expected this to be his last season.

Now the announcement that one of Old Trafford's most popular figures is quitting the game has been brought forward.

He was a quality player. I believe Martin O'Neill made enquiries about bringing him to Filbert Street, but sadly it wasn't to be.

As scorer of the treble-winning goal for United, his place in football history is assured.

I also remember him fondly for his part in the 8-1 hiding dished out to Forest on their own ground.

What would we give for a similar result tonight? lol

One of the best players i've ever seen play, on his day. A devastating finisher and a proper footballer.

I dislike Man United, but he is an exception to the dislike. His winner at the Nou Camp was one of the great Footballing Moments.

Great player, great career. Well done Ole.

He was a bargain buy for Man Utd when you look at that £1.5 million price tag, one of the best finishers around, and obviously he'll be remembered for scoring "that" last minute winner.

I always remember him as the 'super sub'. A player who you knew would score if the ball fell to him in a yard of space around the 18 yard box. Will never forget his winner in the Champions league final or his 4 goals against Forest ;)

don't ask me to translate but you can see how much he is worshiped here, just by the volume of stories, haven't looked at papers today, but you just know it will be stacked full...

there's an interview as well - http://atvs.vg.no/player/index.php?id=6097 - it's in norwegian but worth watching a little of, just cause you can tell he's almost in tears....

the funniest thing i saw of OGS was a man u game shown over here last season with norwegian commetnary and the guy was jabbering on as they do and all of a sudden, in english, you hear him say 'baby-faced assain og come-back-kid', wonderful

Quality player, shame to see him retire but he's had a wonderful career.

Good luck to him if he goes into coaching into the future

Certainly one of my favourite players I ever saw - During the O'Neill era I was ever hopeful of seeing him play for Leicester

Along with Schmeichel, OGS has gotta be one of Alex Ferguson's best ever buys?

The kind of players who make me refuse to be part of the compulsary hatred of man utd by anyone but their supporters - Don't get me wrong there's plenty to dislike about that club, but I can't do anything but admire the skills I've seen

Great player, shame about his 4 years of injuries but that will never take the shine off a man who lead Uniteds line during one of their main glory days and scored THAT goal in the champions league final plus 4 others against forest!

Well done Ole. Great career and great servant to United.

I can remember him scoring 4 after coming off the bench once didn't he?! Anyway, a legend and will go down in Manures history for that Champs League winner. Im surprised Cardiff don't try and tempt him out of retirement though lol

Great player, and kudos to him for fighting back after essentially 3 years out and having a good season last season as well.

Must take huge credit for playing his part in putting Norway on the football world map.

What a player he has been ;) ;) ;) ;)

Gonna miss this lad in the world of football, will always be remembered from the Final and the 8-1 against The Scum

Ledgend, best sub you could possibly want.. A true sportsman who will be greatly missed. It was the celebration he did after scoring in the Champs League final that apparently ****ed his knee up...hmm
