A Dark Day For English Football

A new record will be set on October 6 with only one of the 10 Premier League games starting at the traditional Saturday 3pm kick-off

Eight matches will take place on Sunday, October 7 and another at 12.45pm on the Saturday. Due to the demands of television and involvement with the UEFA Cup, only Aston Villa v West Ham remains at Saturday 3pm.

Fans' leaders are to complain to the Premier League about the timings, claiming that it will be "a dark weekend" for match-going supporters.

Malcolm Clarke, chairman of the Football Supporters' Federation, said: "Fans still very much like the traditional 3pm Saturday kick-off and the decline in that element of the game is a matter of great concern.

"For there to be just one game kicking off at that time is quite extraordinary and it will be a dark weekend for fans.

"It's symbolic of the way things are going but the views of the match-going fan seem to be bottom of the list of priorities. We will certainly bring this up at our next meeting with the Premier League."

Manchester United v Wigan is the other game taking place of Saturday, October 6 but is kicking off at 12.45pm as it is being televised.

Three other matches are being televised on the Sunday, four more games have been switched because teams involved are playing in the UEFA Cup on the previous Thursday and Manchester City v Middlesbrough has been moved for policing reasons.

The City game was originally due to be played in the last week of the season but as their ground is the venue for the UEFA Cup final, UEFA asked the club to switch their Middlesbrough matches to play at the Riverside on the last weekend of the season.

As United are at home on Saturday, October 6, City have to play on the Sunday.

A Premier League spokesman said: "It is a combination of factors - teams featuring in Europe, television games and policing issues.

"We always try to give fans as much notice as possible as our research shows that if we do that, then they can make the appropriate travel arrangements."

Teams involved in the UEFA Cup do not have to play on a Sunday but under Premier League rules they have a right do so if it does not impact on the opposing team.

Saturday Oct 6: Man Utd v Wigan 12:45pm; Aston Villa v West Ham 3pm.

Sunday Oct 7: Arsenal v Sunderland 12pm; Reading v Derby 2pm; Blackburn v Birmingham 3pm; Bolton v Chelsea 3pm; Liverpool v Tottenham 3pm; Man City v Middlesbrough 3pm; Newcastle v Everton 3pm; Fulham v Portsmouth 4.10pm.

To be honest, I find it sickening.

Who can forget when Man Citeh played Everton on a Saturday morning, 11am kick off.

Its bizarre. Fans are being treated like dog shite and I think its safe to say good old traditional 3pm kick-offs on Saturdays are gone.

The people in charge of the game don't give a shit about the supporters, really. As if they're going to give them what they want just because a few will be upset. Money talks, and in this day and age, money is in TV deals. Tough break. But that's the way it is now.

Just shows how much TV plays a role in todays game. Look at it the other way though, if teams hadn't received as much TV revenue then they wouldn't have been able to afford such players to come to the prem. The foreign stars unfortunately make this league the best in the world.

Well if it's only football kick off times that upset you well done.

Personally, I find things like paedophilia sickening but then maybe I've got a distorted view on life.

It was good before the foreign players arrived and when we were developing our own players. Now the proportion of English-born players in the Premiership is so low our national game is bound to suffer and will suffer further.

Calm down mate it's only a game ffs.

Sunday football in Europe is the norm. When are you going to realise that most fans don't a shit when the match is played in fact many welcome sunday football as it allows them to watch more games which in turn may lead to more season ticket holders.

Tell you what lets get rid of floodlights and substitutions too

Wake up and smell the coffee!

This is an argument that will always be around.

Sky have a huge impact on the game, financially and as such, appear to have a say in when games are played.

However, many would say that the coverage now shown by Sky is better than it ever was, pre-Sky.

Therefore, the argument should be, do we allow TV stations to dictate over Football? Is it better to watch mathches on Sky as opposed to how it was 20 years ago. (Grandstand, World of Sport, MOTD)

As long as I can get to games and watch MOTD, I don't really care when they kick-off.

A recent survey, unfortunately I can't find it showed that for a majority of fans this particular tradition does matter a lot. it wasn't just the Saturday issue either it was the majority of games kicking off at the same time also mattered.

On it's own it might be considered unimportant but it's part of a whole raft of supporter affected decisions/restrictions that are eroding the fun and entertainment out of the game such as over pricing, sitting, the absence of unreserved seating and paying on the gate, incessant music to signal every decision in the game such as corners, throw ins, goals, excessive advertising again for throw ins, substitutions, time added on FFS.

To relate these issues to substitutions and floodlights is disingenuous to say the least.

The game is gradually becoming a laughing stock.

I guess the answer to this might be are those that watch live matches only on TV as opposed to attending live matches in the majority, if the are, and I suspect it's true then should we allow the needs 'armchair fan' to dictate when matches take place?

A laughing stock by whom exactly?

...............It's about money at the end of the day and anyone who thinks the introduction of floodlights wasn't about money is kidding themselves!

Lets remember it's not all Skys fault, there are re-arranged UEFA Cup games, & F**king Sentanta Sports to consider, what a stupid idea it was to sell them some rights.

Agree about Setanta.

No, it's not all Sky' fault but they are considered to be the innovators of the modern 'watched on TV' game. And in fairness, they have got better at it.

Also, do they not pump some cash back into the game?? :dunno:

I'm a man who likes weekend football matches to be played on a Saturday, I always have done. I like to get up, wander in to town, buy a paper, read it whilst having a fry up. The in the bookies for a few football bets. Then if i'm not going the Leicester game, then it's up the boozer in the early afternoon for a skinful and watch the results come in.

As a traditionalist I find it disappointing but its the way of things now everywhere else, Spain, Italy especially so it was bound to happen here, especially with Sky and Setanta battling out the rights to the matches.

Fans may whinge, but they'll still turn up for matches no matter what the kick-off time or date.

Like it or not, Sunday matches are part and parcel of Premiership football, and always have been.
