Megson's team selection

I have been reserving my judgement on Gary Megson and I have to say this hysteria is silly. He has been here 8 days and the choice of Matty Fryatt was to be applauded. Less so the dropping of N'Gotty.

Less so the abysmal team selection and substitutions.

Yesterday's performance reminded me so much of the Kelly era - no passion, players out of position, defensive confusion, long ball and lack of match fitness. We had no chance with the team that started - why play 3 defensive minded players in midfield and a striker at right-wing?! Why wasn't there any creativity with the exception of Clemence in the team, let alone on the bench? It is so frustrating given the attacking talent at the club (Kaebi, Ferreira, Newton). Newton played brilliantly in central midfield by all accounts for the reserves so why not give him the opportunity to start there against his old club? How are we going to know whether Kaebi and Ferreira are good enough unless they get their chance? After Leicester beat Watford 4-1, I thought at last we had a team with purpose and ambition. Sadly, I was wrong.

By the way, I don't understand why people are saying our fans were poor yesterday in their show of support - if we're going to be served crap like that for the whole match, we're not exactly motivated to get behind the team? We have to show our displeasure with the performance (and not each other as happened a few times yesterday during the match).

Personally I'm pleased he put Stearman and Fryatt back in the team as I've been calling for it all season. They both came on against Forest and did well from what I can gather so give them a chance in the team. Stearman is LCFC through and through and will always give 100% and Fryatt needs a run in the team to build up his confidence and then I think he'll be a very good player.

N'Gotty is awful as a full back but was very good as a centre half earlier in the season but so are Kisnorbo and McAuley so that's a tough one.

So why was hume subbed?

He wasnt playing to bad, considering the way the game was going. can only see it as an injury

But him and sheehan subed, for 2 defensive players in kishishev and N'gotty, is quite simply a disgrace.

Chambers centre mid?

It doesn't take a genious to work out he is a RB.

Stearman is terrible, gets the ball, whacks it.

Cort and Fryatt upfront..

a never used parnership before, you dont start them in a big game like this, yes you have to pair them sometime, but that should happen by making a sub.

Also, 2-0 down, he never went out on the attack, kept only 2 forwards on in the second half, instead of keeping three on and going out to grab something.

His record is worse than Allens after 3 games... (Cup games included)

Allen:

P W D L F A PTS

3 1 1 1 3 3 4

Megson:

P W D L F A PTS

3 1 1 1 4 6 4

Same points, just more conceeded under megson

Allen's table doesnt include Watford either, as that was his forth and final game

So does that mean if Megson doesnt win the next game, he is to be sacked, as he has started worse than Allen

I know it wasn't the reasons on the pitch for Allens dismisal, but still...

Table reveals Allen's reign was beter after 3 games

Same results, but

I was listening to yesterday's match and they made a good call in saying that he should try (as far as possible) to play the team that beat Watford. This would mean DJ out wide Hume and Vries up front. I would prefer Hume and Fryatt.

I don't understand why the man is making it so difficult for himself. He says we all have players who are much of a muchness and then he proceeds to play so many of them out of position?

If I were to come into a club without knowing much about the players (piss poor in itself, he should have busied himself by watching every single recent performance that he could get his hands on from the moment he was called in for an interview), I'd do one of two things. I'd either look up the best recent performance (Watford in our case) and work to that framework, or I'd just play a simple 4-4-2 with players in their correct positions. How long does it take to ask the 20 or so first team players what their preferred position is? Frankly he should know anyway.

I thought the decsion to play Chambers in the centre of midfield was woeful. Yes, he did do okay there against Forest but they are a lower league team and he has no real experience playing there. The decsion seems even more confusing when you see an experienced pro in Kishishev sitting on the bench!

Not only that, but Cort and Fryatt just do not work together at all, when you look for a good pairing you look for them to complement each other, they don't do this at all, both looked very lazy to me yesterday.

Well pretty well everyone has been rubbished.

And that's after we've signed so many players it's almost embarrassing.

Have all these wondrous big-wage signings pointed us towards the promised land?

No.

So what do we do now.

Ditch them and sign some more like MM sees to do with his managers?

Well I for one don't believe they are all bad players.

In fact I'd say very few of our current squad are bad players

What they lack is leadership and direction.

Nothing Megson has said in public so far would have inspried me one bit if I were a player.

The substitutions against QPR didn't impress.

The second half performance against Forest didn't impress

And Megson's half-time reaction to us going two-down at Charlton didn't impress.

Megson might think he needs new personnel.

But right now he needs to focus on getting the best out of what he's got.

And those very players beat Watford 4-1 and gave a perfectly decent account of themselves against Blackpool (despite the defeat), against Palace and against Portsmouth in the friendly.

We were quite obviously nothing like that standard yesterday.

I must admit i do feel sorry for Megson who has inherited a side that now has now Weso and no left-back of any talent. He has got to find his best team which may take a few games which is both disastrous and unfortunate, especially as it took MA a few games before he found a decent system and line-up after trying a few.

I wasnt impressed today but I wont have a real go at GM unless he takes more than a couple more games to find his best side.

Fully agree,

Megson has had what, 8 days in which to get to know a squad of 45 players!!

Probably doesn't know the name of half of them yet.

Think that over the next couple of games he'll try a selection of players to try to determine the best line up.

Can't be an easy job, think we all just have to be patient for a few games and hope he gets it right.

It was the manner of the defeat that I found so worrying, i've not seen city play collectively that badly for a long while. Even our 'good' players Fulop, Kisnorbo, hume McCauly all were poor (and the rest worse).

by Stoke he should have a better idea of the squad, the only way is up from that performance

I'm, pretty sure we'll see some new signings soon. ;)

Yeay! More Colmun inches in the paper. I see that Robbie Fowler bagged two yesterday and Hassilbank has scored as well hasn't he - will they prove a missed opportunity - properly considering they're not wearing a leicester shirt - no doubt if they were with us they'd be shite! Pesamism and dislexia overload

Megson needs to stop skulking on the touchline with his hands in his pockets and his tie at half mast. He looks like he's just left the pub after a couple on a Friday night. He looks nervous. His body language betrays this, and that kind of thing soon passes to the team.

He also needs to stop publicly criticising his players and using the 'I didn't buy them card'. I reckon we have enough decent players to be top 10. They just have to believe it and want it. If he keeps saying we're not good enough in public, everyone will start to believe it.

It's just basic managment skills you could pick up from reading one of those 'how to be a manager in 60 minutes books' you get at the airport.

The man has no class, and needs to start inspiring everyone, not criticising them.

Good post........body language and communicatiion skills leave a lot to be desired. That won't change no matter how long we give him.

Brilliant post. It should be on Mandaric's desk in the morning. Cos that's the thruth in four sentences. Players need a manager to show some belief in them and to make them feel pumped up and terrific - not to snidely slag them off.

I don't really have much sympathy with Megson to be honest. He has a squad here that is quite capable of getting wins. I only hope for his sake that he starts picking a decent side instead of the attempt he made at Charlton.

Just to jump on the bandwagon for this post.

I agree as well, watching him on the touchline, when he is actually there he just looks like he doesn't want to be there. Taggart always seems to be ahead of him, bellowing out instructions. Maybe this has an adverse effect on the players, as during the match, a newcomer to football might be mistaken to thinking Tags was our gaffer.

This picture shows a good contrast...

ha, it's almost like he's thinking: "hey, what's that grey haired fellow doing, seems to be....saying things...saying things that...might...make...his team play better! ooh, don't reckon that'll help. now maybe if i don't move i'll become invisible."

Also, as an aside, Joe Mattock looks really camp in this picture.

lol

I'm not sure I agree with these statements - what the manager does off the field far outweighs what he does on the field. What the players need to have in their minds is what their gaffer has pumped into them all week, and in the changerooms. And also the arsekicking that they will get if they don't perform.

Think Alex Ferguson - he couldn't look less interested half the time just sitting there chewing his gum like a tripper, but I suspect the players respect him.

Let's also not forget that Megson has promotion credentials.

Lets not forget that in MA`s first game in charge he started Kish, Newton, Chambers and MDV. He quickly assessed the players and by the Watford game we had a good system and team out for a home game although Hume on the right was a risk that worked on this occasion. GM has probably taken some advice from his backroom staff, watched some DVDs and then made his own judgment but a lot of his decisions thus far havent been so great but some at Forest worked out well. As I mentioned before, he is without 22% of his best 11 with Clarke and Weso out and they are big players for us, especially Weso. Without them you would imagine that the side would not perform as well as we would with them.

I know its sounds like I am defending him but I`d like to see what happens against Stoke and Wolves first before having a real go!

He is saying it to shift blame from himself and I agree with everything you say tho putting your own squad down like that will only make them think negative, god knows how he explains it on the training ground.
