I don't believe that at all, nearly everyone I know is on more like 16-21k
Dr The Singh Posted 31 October 2007 Posted 31 October 2007 Something I learned the hard way, since graduating i've only had 1 job in Leicester, and since have looked at moving career back in Leicester but for me to do so I would have to take a massive pay cut!!! Unfortunately there isn't much else in Leicester barring call centre work relative to other city's!!
The People's Hero Posted 31 October 2007 Posted 31 October 2007 That's simply ridiculous. Why do I earn so little?
Monk Posted 31 October 2007 Posted 31 October 2007 You have to bear in mind that the average salary for people with significant experience is much higher than the average social profile of someone on FT (from an age perspective). 31K sounds a bit high as an average salary though.

Yeah but I'm a pretty good underwriter and also have to put up with being company secretary. Oh and I'm part ACII qualified.
Manwell Pablo Posted 31 October 2007 Posted 31 October 2007 I've just applied for a new job, salary will be around and about fez's. And he has "enough money to do anything I want" which sounds good to me.
The People's Hero Posted 31 October 2007 Posted 31 October 2007 I make a loss each month and that's without actually doing anything. I'm already starting to think I've spent too much money on this Chelsea game. Can't we start up a company- there must be some decent skills here between us?
Vacamion Posted 31 October 2007 Posted 31 October 2007 The distribution of wages is not going to be a bell curve, is it ? You can only go so much below the average, but you can go waaaay above it. The Hedge Fund Managers and foreign Oligarchs must be skewing the average upwards.

I have sod all qualifications other than a degree - I've just been lucky to land up in a good job. Pretty much decided on doing a masters next year though

Monk Posted 31 October 2007 Posted 31 October 2007 Yeah, that's a sound point. But I earn a ridiculously low salary and I'm not a happy chappy. I'll get you a pint tonight then
Vacamion Posted 31 October 2007 Posted 31 October 2007 Yeah, that's a sound point. But I earn a ridiculously low salary and I'm not a happy chappy. I have just taken a new job (I, too, crawl around on the dungheap that is the insurance industry) for a LOT less than my last job, on the grounds that happiness, where I will be living and my workl/life balance are more important than earning shedloads of cash and being miserable... As Jim Bowen's mate Tony used to say - "That's the gamble!"...

Broking/Intermediary/Insurer?

Vacamion Posted 31 October 2007 Posted 31 October 2007 Broking/Intermediary/Insurer? I'm a claimie. Was with an Insurer for years. Volunteered for redundo earlier this year. Just about to start with a big Loss Adjuster. I was so ashamed of working in insurance that I used to tell girls in clubs that I worked "with dolphins". That didn't work either...
The People's Hero Posted 31 October 2007 Posted 31 October 2007 I tell oooppss erm told women that I'm 'big in risk'.

It's distributed like so: So the majority of people are earning less, it's just dragged up by those few people that earn a feck load. I drew that in paint, up the stats nerds!

Fat Ron Posted 31 October 2007 Posted 31 October 2007 A Truer reflection of an "average wage" in Leicester would be to take into consideration the Students and the other 70% of the population in Leicester that they forgot to involve. I have recently moved into what I would class as a well paid job on £20k, for the last 10 years struggling to get £15k. I am qualified and experianced in my line of work so get exceptionally annoyed when I hear the average wage in Leicester is around £27k-£35k... That utter Bollox. Who did they ask, Dentists, Doctors, Solicitors and Footballers?? Average wage in Leicester should actually be around £15-18K IMO.

Leicester is in general a very poor city. I doubt the average wage is that high. Its only about 30K in London I can't see how Leics could be higher

Most people I know would struggle to get by on 20k in London but we have someone in Leicester saying they consider it a high salary. I'd struggle massively on that sort of salary. But then I am a complete idiot with money and am still paying the price for an "excessive" time at University. Someone who had at least some control over their finances might be ok but I still think it'd be a struggle. Just my rent, credit card, student loan and personal loan comes to about £1,500 per month!!

I'm sure you're one who can sympathise with me that once you get above 30K you get totally raped on student loan payments. Think mine's £250 a month at the moment or something stupid. Sods.
