Lovejoy Posted 10 November 2007 Posted 10 November 2007 Forgive me but could someone please explain to me what exactly is so good about Joe Mattock? Apart from the Villa game he has looked out of his depth almost every time he plays. He is clueless going forward, and his defending isn't good enough because he has no positional sense whatsoever.
Mark Posted 10 November 2007 Posted 10 November 2007 It's impossible to play well in a team of statues. Oh and this is what happens when we play defenders at wing back and expect them to act as a right/left back and winger, two threads questioning Mattock and Stearmans ability, Stearmans perhaps justified but this is ridiculous.
DB11 Posted 10 November 2007 Posted 10 November 2007 He is good going forward but not such a good wing back or left back. They should teach him to become a left winger
Milky Posted 10 November 2007 Posted 10 November 2007 It seems a bit early for Mattock. He still plays like a boy, and we need a man.
Brainy Posted 10 November 2007 Posted 10 November 2007 They should teach him to become a left winger But we'd still play him out of position.
Jimmy Posted 10 November 2007 Posted 10 November 2007 He is good going forward but not such a good wing back or left back. They should teach him to become a left winger good going forward? did he ever beat his man? did he ever get a running start at their full back? no on both counts, every time he got the ball he dropped 10 yards back and went from a standing start
Bert Posted 10 November 2007 Posted 10 November 2007 good going forward? did he ever beat his man? did he ever get a running start at their full back? no on both counts, every time he got the ball he dropped 10 yards back and went from a standing start He did actually try and run at their full back, it just came to nothing every time.
Ozwin Posted 10 November 2007 Posted 10 November 2007 He's 17. Geez, show me more 17 year olds in the Championship who are the equivilant of a Wayne Rooney or Thierry Henry. He's got years ahead of him, you don't just suddenly become amazing at what you do, he'll learn.
Jimmy Posted 10 November 2007 Posted 10 November 2007 He did actually try and run at their full back, it just came to nothing every time. yes but if he ever got a running start in stead of being flat footed on the half way line he may of had some success
Nath Posted 10 November 2007 Posted 10 November 2007 What did he do so bad today? He had a steady game i thought
RowlattsFox Posted 10 November 2007 Posted 10 November 2007 He needs a winger infront of him, so does Stearman. Everytime he got the ball he either had to take on both their winger and their full back or hit it up the line. He was no worst than anybody else today.
Koke Posted 10 November 2007 Posted 10 November 2007 He was decent today I thought. I don't understand all the criticism. And he's only 17 ffs.

Yeah why do you think that is? They're not ready. Loan him out to a league 2 club for experience.

Try asking either of the Liverpool or Chelsea scouts this! You think he has just had a contract extension for the sake of it?! At 17, i think he has more footballing ability than the likes of Carl Cort!
Ozwin Posted 10 November 2007 Posted 10 November 2007 I've played Joe Mattock and I'm not slow by any means. He's got blistering pace and I could barely catch up with him, he's got such a good touch and has skills to burn. Remember when he first got his start? He went on a crazy run and the commentators were all 'OMG how daring and skillful of this amazing 17 year old!' - I think he's being held back, he'll come good when he's allowed to express himself. I reckon he just needs the manager to allow him to do so.
Jimmy Posted 10 November 2007 Posted 10 November 2007 What did he do so bad today? He had a steady game i thought i don't think he was bad today just very disapointing as he is capeable of much better then that
Ozwin Posted 10 November 2007 Posted 10 November 2007 Tbh, I think you're all being overly harsh of the guy. We don't have an amazing left back who's worth millions, so Mattock or Sheehan are our only outlets. Believe me, we'll probably get one in in January and we probably won't see much of these two again for a while. They're getting first team football in a big league, this'll help them and stand them in good stead for the future.

Don't let the fact that he is 17 get in your way when judging him.
syston_fox Posted 10 November 2007 Posted 10 November 2007 In my opnion the only problem with Mattock today was his work when he didnt have the ball. In the first half he stayed so close to Kisnorbo and never seemed willing to make an off the ball run down the wing in the hope that the pass would come his way. I think that is mostly down to inexperience at this time and it will come... there is clearly plenty of potential there for all to see.
lcfc_jme Posted 10 November 2007 Posted 10 November 2007 He had a poor game today, probably his worst game for us to date. I'm not going to make excuses for that today because it was terrible, but I like the kid. He's young, he's still learning and he will certainly improve. Please, please stop with this whole wingback farce though. We have no wingbacks. Mattock is a left-back. Stearman is a right-back. Allow them to do their proper jobs with somebody infront of them for God's sake. I'd say Mattock would look useful if he had somebody to link up with down the left. Playing as a LWB he looks extremely exposed, and as a 17 year old he hasn't got the experience to deal with those situations yet. But today underlined how much we actually do rely on Alan Sheehan. Without his set-pieces today we were never really able to seriously threaten the Burnley goal. All of our corners / free-kicks were awful.
Joe. Posted 10 November 2007 Posted 10 November 2007 Mattock did probably have his worst game for us today. To be honest, I do sort of agree with the thread starter about him, he is a bit overrated at the moment. I know he's only 17 and he will improve but I just don't want him to turn out like Stearman, and make what seems like no progress and become complacent now he's just bagged himself a contract. At the moment whenever he plays he does seem a bit far out of his depth, but I'm sure he'll improve with more experience. If I'm honest I think a loan spell to a lower division would do him good.
AyewJoking Posted 10 November 2007 Posted 10 November 2007 He's a rookie and if older more experienced players are playing crap and are not sure of what to do or how then why should we expect him to be any better?
The Reverend Posted 10 November 2007 Posted 10 November 2007 He was pants today. Get Sheehan back asap, he seems a lot more consistent to me. And his set pieces obviously.
