Thracian Posted 29 December 2007 Posted 29 December 2007 Midfield needs improving big time. And I'm not too convinced with the lads up front either. And we need at least one left back. Our defence is more or less sorted. You're much too kind. Until we start passing the ball out of defence - like a good team - we will always have the sort of mess we had today. I wonder what the record of pass sequences would have told us today. If either side put togther four successive passes it was an achievement. But watch some of the good teams play. They'll put eight and 10 passes together regularly, sometimes more. And those passes start at the back.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 29 December 2007 Posted 29 December 2007 I'm pleased with a point and believe its about time Ollie is getting the respect he deserves. Disapointed to concede in the last few minutes definetly chucked away 2 points
He's not bald Posted 29 December 2007 Posted 29 December 2007 Absolutely shitty first half both teams were piss poor with silly little fouls aided and abetted by a nit picking referee and a linesman who didn't have mind of his own. Did we actually see more than 5 minutes of football.Second half marginally better again neither team impressed at all and it looked like whoever scored first would win but no I forgot it happened to be us that scored so no win there. Will this punishment ever end? You really talk utter bollox sometimes...we were much the better team in the second half..Charlton had lost the plot until we scored and went all "sit back and defend"..do you actually watch these games?
Jack Posted 29 December 2007 Posted 29 December 2007 1st half was poor, 2nd half we played well and deserved to win the game. Gutted with the point, we deserved more today.
He's not bald Posted 29 December 2007 Posted 29 December 2007 I don't know who's managing the team but if Ollie was responsible for our change of tactics once we'd scored he wants shooting.Talking about wilfully shooting ourselves in the foot. If my neighbour in the stands had accepted my £10 to a five bet I could at least have made some moeny from it cos that's what I offered as a bet that Charlton would score the moment I saw us pissing about with that corner two minutes from time. Instead of just simply flighting the ball into the box and giving ourselves the chance of a second goal we idiotically and unsuccessfully tried to waste time as if we haven't come unstuck time and time again with such negativity. It was only against Wolves that I said how naive we were to stop defending from the front, stop maintaining our tempo and stop putting pressure on their defenders by continuing to push up. The reason we got ahead against Charlton was because we stopped them getting forward and into our box. As soon as we took the lead we went 4-5-1, conceded ground, crowded the defensive area and started making the stupid and totally unnecessary mistakes that allowed them back into the game. City's penalty box was suddenly crowded like a party on New Year's Eve. For god's sake Thrac...stop talking utter sense! Whennnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn will the message EVER get through. It is not obligatory that we concede tactical own goals and those two points we donated to Charlton today could well get us relegated in time. Totally unforgiveable.

Unfortunately I do watch them and I make no apologies for my description of the game, maybe we were the better of two very poor teams but if we can't hold on to a lead then by definition we don't deserve to win. If you're happy with what your seeing fine, but my standards are somewhat higher than yours and I don't speak utter bolloxs I just happen to pay to watch it yet again.

Much the better is still only your opinion, I'd say marginally better, besides better or not both teams were piss poor. As I said if you're happy with that quality of play then I suggest it's you that needs glasses.

Fez of Mahrez Posted 29 December 2007 Posted 29 December 2007 I was devastated and outraged when we started trying to play keep-ball with two minutes of normal time left. I can understand it in the last minute but there's no way you're going to keep the ball up there for five minutes and it just switches players off mentally. Disgusting idea whoever it was. The formation was all over the place again which is a stop-gap measure. We need those creative midfielders badly. I didn't think that in the summer but this charade involving the likes of N'Gotty and Kenton in midfield can't go on past January . Sheehan blew his big chance today. Capaldi please. Wasn't as impressed with Fryatt as everyone else seems to have been. Thought he was far better on Boxing Day. Best goal celebration ever at the Walkers for me. Great fun.

OzFox311 Posted 30 December 2007 Posted 30 December 2007 What can be said... a good solid performance from the boys, but lessons to be learnt about not switching off till after the final whistle... I am excited with Ollie if this can keep up, he's got a side that was flat out looking like even showing interest in the fireworks on NYE let alone a game to come out for their past 2 outings and show commitment, cause and to almost look like for the majority of the match, a team that wants to win. I think Ollie will hopefully get some players he wants in transfer in January and we can sort out some of the issues that are showing, such as N'Gotty in midfield... cause that clearly doesn't work and I think it's a stop gap ATM for what we have. Decent game, shame about the result but it's better than a loss, and the signs are encouraging for the time ahead, it's onward and upward for the team and for Ollie, which for us fans, can only be a good thing.
when_you're_smiling Posted 30 December 2007 Posted 30 December 2007 Anyone see the yellow for Iwelumo? Mate sat near there said it shoudl certainly have been a red and having seen what Arteta was sent off for in the Everton Arsenal game from what I could see from miles away there wasn't a huge amount of difference. I'd of taken a point beforehand but like Wolves, Charlton were poor and we should have hung on. Quite what Fulop was doing for the goal I dont know as he was never going to get the ball and if he'd stayed on his line he would've easily have been able to tip over McCarthy's shot. Given the performances and the chances we have had I think we should've got more than the five points from the past three games though that's testament itself to the improvment we've seen recently. Still at least we're competing rather than rolling over for teams a la Hull, Burnley, Sheff Utd etc. January is going to be crucial with the run of games we have got.
Daggers Posted 30 December 2007 Posted 30 December 2007 Can Fez please post a long comment so that I can agree with it?
Fez of Mahrez Posted 30 December 2007 Posted 30 December 2007 Can Fez please post a long comment so that I can agree with it? philce Posted 30 December 2007 Posted 30 December 2007 You're wrong there. You're bang on Mark. C-Man and Flynny will disagree with me but we blew it big time. We changed our mentality when we scored and it cost us. When you start holding it in the corner it makes us lazy. Charlton sensed we were trying to sit back and it made them come onto us. We had that game won but a stupid mentality cost us the 3 points. I could see Ollie shouting and waving them up the pitch after we scored. They were all shitting it just the same as we were! Confidence will come, after after our last few results I'd have taken the point before KO!

Agree with you once again Fez- thought he was extremely lazy! Played a few good balls but that, IMO for a left back, just isn't good enough if you're getting skinned and not tracking back. Disagree about Fryatt- I thought he was excellent.

What is Fryatt actually doing that's excellent? I do agree he had a good game but he just always seems to lack the final pass or the final finish. When he gets into a good position you expect him to get away from the defender and score but so often he gets caught with the ball under his feet and we lose possession. Fryatts probably one of, if not the best finisher at the club but in the past two games he's not had one clear cut chance.

Fryatts probably one of, if not the best finisher at the club but in the past two games he's not had one clear cut chance. You're right. He's spending far too much time outside the box. He links up the play well at times but we need him in more advanced positions where he can create space and get a shot in. He can't shoot from long range. As for the game itself, we need to put in to perspective. Not so long ago a lot us were worried about where we'd end up come the new year. (me including) Bearing in mind the players we've put out, 5 points is a decent return over the past 3 games, which should have been 7. I thought we were the better side for most of the game without really creating much. Charlton only had two chances though, one from Varney and the other from a fluke McCarthy effort. I don't mind the time wasting but we went about it the wrong way. It was too early and of course this gave Charlton the initiative. Remember it was 18th against 5th, and although Charlton are clearly a better side than us, you couldn't really tell the difference on the day.

Either way he should have been sent of later for diving, and if he didn't dive then the ref should have given a penalty.
dandannieldanok Posted 30 December 2007 Posted 30 December 2007 Iwulumo was a right dirty bastard. Very true which upset our defenders at times, he is exactly the type of striker we need. McAuley to be fair dealt with him well but he is the type of striker we are in desperate need of.
Bryn Posted 30 December 2007 Posted 30 December 2007 From The Sunday Times December 30, 2007 Paddy McCarthy haunts Foxes with late leveller Leicester 1 Charlton 1 Paul Rowan at The Walkers stadium ON THE verge of celebrating their first back-to-back wins at the Walkers stadium since August 2006, Leicester City were denied by a player who knows as well as any how bad things have been at the club in recent years. Their former captain, Paddy McCarthy, celebrated his return to the ground with a rousing performance capped off by an overhead kick that brought Charlton their equaliser in the 89th minute. It was an equaliser the promotion chasers just about deserved, having been stretched for most of the second half by a Leicester City side who have clearly responded to Ian Holloway’s unique motivational techniques. They had deservedly taken the lead through their present captain Stephen Clemence, who scored with an excellent header in the 78th minute. Alas, it was Clemence who contributed to the equaliser, though goalkeeper Martin Fulop will not want to see the replay either. Chris Powell pumped a hopeful looking free kick into the box which Fulop came out for but flapped at. The ball ricocheted around the crowded penalty area before McCarthy hooked it over his head and into the net. “He does that all the time in training,†Alan Pardew joked afterwards about his centre half, who has struggled to break into the side since his £750,000 move over the summer. “We’ve made a habit of scoring late goals, but we can’t afford to keep relying on that though and I am concerned about the lack of technical quality that we should have, and haven’t got available.†Since replacing Gary Megson as Leicester manager, Hollway, has made no secret of his desire to get rid of some of the dead wood and the last thing he would have wanted was to have to dip into his reserves, which he had to do twice within the first 20 minutes. First, Joe Mattock was involved in a nasty clash of heads with his teammate Patrick Kisnorbo and had to be withdrawn on 14 minutes, to be replaced by Alan Sheehan. Then, to make matters worse, Collins John limped off with a hamstring injury, allowing Jonathan Hayes a chance to prove himself. Leicester though, took the game to their more fêted opposition although Iain Hume wasted their best chance by shooting horribly across goal and Richard Stearman firing the loose ball into the side netting. Most of the action continued to be played out at the other end after the break also. Weaver had to beat away an Alan Sheehan free kick from outside the box on 57 minutes and then did well diving low to his right to keep out Matty Fryatt’s effort Leicester took a deserved lead 12 minutes from time when Richard Searman’s deep cross from the right was met about 10 yards out at the back post by Clemence with a firm downward header which crept past the despairing dive of Weaver. It looked enough to win the game until their former captain struck so emphatically. “That game was a bit surreal for me,†Holloway said. “Our former centre half comes and scores with an overhead kick. With the two substitutions I’ve had to make, that team has never played together, there was no balance in it and it wasn’t till half time that I could actually get them together and I thought the second half was terrific.†With the attitude his team showed and money to spend in the January transfer window, the second half of the season shouldn’t be half bad for Holloway either. If you think we need a better alternative to Sheehan and we can find one then I won't be complaining but by all accounts Capaldi's been playing either naff or just average all season. He sounds like another Nielsen really. All hype and no substance. And why anyone would want to replace a guy who's played a part in a greater proportion of our goals and nearest misses than anyone else in our squad I fail to understand. Especially for someone like Capaldi who, as a 26-year-old presumably at his peak, hasn't scored at all this season and has managed just one assist in the Cup. We have enough trouble scoring goals as it is. And even yesterday, ignoring his two crosses, his neaqr post corner that should have been attacked he still had our third best shot which was deflected wide by their diving goalkeeper. I wonder when Mattock, for instance, last brought even a save from any goalkeeper? Yet people would still pick him first. Makes no sense at all to me.
