shrek1970 Posted 10 January 2008 Posted 10 January 2008 Ipswich are chasing Leicester's £1million-rated centre-back Gareth McAuley (mirror) Leicester City central defender Gareth McAuley is today's player claimed to be interesting the Blues by the tabloids. The 28-year-old Northern Ireland international is reportedly valued at £1 million. McAuley, 6ft 3in tall, joined Leicester on a free transfer from the Imps in the summer of 2006 after his contract at Sincil Bank came to an end. His current deal at the Walkers Stadium is up in the summer of 2009. The Larne-born centre-half is a regular for Leicester and it would be a surprise if they were to allow him to leave, although new manager Ian Holloway may have a January target lined-up as a replacement for McAuley, who has been capped eight times by Northern Ireland. McAuley, if there is any truth in the story, looks to be a long-term replacement for Jason De Vos rather than a partner for the Canadian. Interest in McAuley may signal that boss Jim Magilton is no longer eyeing Hibs centre-half Rob Jones, the Town manager having admitted interest in the former Grimsby man back in the summer. Fox in a Box Posted 10 January 2008 Posted 10 January 2008 Don't sell as he is one of the better players at the club.

MikeyT Posted 10 January 2008 Posted 10 January 2008 sell him!!!for a million we'll be laughing we need a pacier player to play with kisnorbo. mcauley is a weak link in a 4 man defence No, he's one of the better players!! Bloody keep him!!! If we are serious about heading up the table, we need to keep our best players!! IMO he is one!
Fez of Mahrez Posted 10 January 2008 Posted 10 January 2008 Any sort of half-decent replacement and I'd sell up for that money. He's one of the reasons we are in this position, as much as anyone. N'Gotty til the end of the season and then shell out for a more mobile centre-back in the summer. I can't believe we'd be getting £1million for a slow 28-year-old who would get murdered in the Premiership.

I agree, but we'd need to find a replacement this month as i'd not fancy going through the remainder of the season with just Kisnorbo and N'Gotty as our recognised centre backs. I know Kenton and Stearman could play there, but neither of those fill me with any confidence when we're in the shit. I would flog McAuley and move heaven and earth for Martin Taylor at Brum, he'd be gotten for £750,000. In fact we could probably get Taylor and Danns for a million.

Ive always thought he was decent tbh.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 10 January 2008 Posted 10 January 2008 What about N'Gotty(i dont mean to sell), he's slower than Mcauley!!I say keep him! Ive always thought he was decent tbh. He will do til the end of the season - there's not much to choose between him and McAuley. Cover-wise I agree with Ric we'd be looking a bit bare but I'm sure we could get someone in on loan to sort that and Kenton as a backup wouldn't be the end of the world. I just think if that fee is correct then we should be doing that. There are decent young Premiership centre-backs going for that sort of money (Martin Taylor, Gary Cahill etc). We need to inject as much pace into the team as possible and we've got far too many one-paced players (McAuley, Fryatt, King, Sheehan, N'Gotty, Clemence, Howard for example).
Flynny Posted 10 January 2008 Posted 10 January 2008 Sell. Him and Kisnorbo are solid players but have the same weaknesses. Kisnorbo is marginally better because of his extra mobility and distance on the header, though his positioning isn't quite so good. Sell, get someone speedy in. Or try Stearman there with Chambers Right-back. A million's silly money.
The People's Hero Posted 10 January 2008 Posted 10 January 2008 I'd take anything over £250k for the lad. Too slow and positionally poor. Not even the greatest tackler. Also, has any noticed how often he competes with other centre backs for the ball, making them both miss it? Strong in the air, weak on the floor.
Manwell Pablo Posted 10 January 2008 Posted 10 January 2008 What about N'Gotty(i dont mean to sell), he's slower than Mcauley!!I say keep him! Ive always thought he was decent tbh. Reads the game better has better distrubution, better techincally, arguable as good as McAuley in the air. Million Pounds. If they had a brain cell between them in the back rooms at Leicester we could of signed Marton Fulop, piece of piss.

N'Gotty's anticipation and reading of the game is worth a yard or so start on McAuley though. Not to mention the fact he can actually pass a football.

Yeah, i do understand what you are saying. I actually never realised how slow Fryatt was until i saw the Ipswich game recently. I was sat behind him when he picked up the ball towards the end of the game and went on that little run, which ended up with him giving the ball away, but it was the first thing i said to my mate sat with me. I mean ive seen him play loads of times before, but it just struck me on that instance how slow he actually is!
The People's Hero Posted 10 January 2008 Posted 10 January 2008 At QPR away, Fryatt suddenly looked quick (albeit sh it).

Holloway would much rather blow the cash on mediocre Plymouth players, just because he once managed to get them in and around the play-offs at the start of the season.

IMO he is one! if we have eventual aspirations of pushing for the play offs in the long term i dont see mcauley as being good enough. pace isnt a neccesity so long as you can read the game and see things before they happen but mcauley has shown on numerous occasions he has lapses. i think we need a more dependable player in his position
Finn Claw Posted 10 January 2008 Posted 10 January 2008 Holloway would much rather blow the cash on mediocre Plymouth players, just because he once managed to get them in and around the play-offs at the start of the season. He spent funk all on Hayles - From the sound of things he wanted a strong player in the dressing room. £1m i'd drive him to Ipswich, Kenton or Stearman can act as cover for Ngotty.
Blue Bob Posted 10 January 2008 Posted 10 January 2008 We have one of the tightest defences in the league, which McAuley has been one of the main players. To break this up would be madness. Our problem is midfield and going forward. Leave the defence alone for now ... I appreciate he is not premiership quality but we are not there yet so it is not an issue!!!

lildave3 Posted 10 January 2008 Posted 10 January 2008 I like him, but I wouldn't turn down a million.

morris1234 Posted 10 January 2008 Posted 10 January 2008 1 million for mcauley?? not sure about that, 1million extra so we could afford norris..................................................... dum dum DDDDUUUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMMM
Uncle Monty Posted 10 January 2008 Posted 10 January 2008 I'd be pretty pissed if he went, he is a good player and i like him. i met him when i was working for the council and started chatting he seemed a pretty down to earth guy. He also didnt think much of josh low which i thought was spot on.
