Stuliasz Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 After spending far too long on a dreadful Tiscali service, I have finally got round to getting the MAC code from them to migrate elsewhere. So I was just wondering if anyone could recommend anything decent. There are a few that I'm leaning towards after a bit of research - we are with Sky so I've considered their packages which look best for the price - but with them being quite mainstream I was wondering what the speeds are like at peak times and do they throttle peer-to-peer downloads? Others that seem to be recommended highly on all the comparison sites are Zen and Madasafish - the same questions as above apply to these. Thanks in advance for the help.
DB11 Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 Sky Edit: I should read more than the topic title... but yeah I use Sky.
hebangsthedrums Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 Not orange... www.ispreview.co.uk is a good place to research
Phube Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 I'll third Sky... £5 a month and I get ~4-5Mbps (BT says My server is 6.1Mbps Max!) Can't complain!
the_bowman Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 I'm on VirginMedia, wouldn't reccommend it, speed drops dramatically at peak times (I run on 2Mbps and it drops to about 500Kbps or even lower)
lavrentis Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 I'm on Virgin Media ADSL 8MB, normally for ADSL services speeds go down in peak periods to around 500-1000kbps. In peak periods I often get 2-4MB broadband. Off Peak I get the around 7-8MB. Overall I would recommend it, however it does vary from house to house because of the distance to the exchange etc.
dandannieldanok Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 I'm on Orange, Wanadoo when we signed up, and I wouldn't especially recommend it.
the_bowman Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 Oh, and if you wanted to go for the VirginMedia TV package thing then I don't know about anyone else, but we have a lot of trouble with it, not showing program listings, channels dissapearing etc.
Rincewind Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 I'm on virgin. but I also have it for tv and phone so its all in one package. At some point I want to get a new telly cos its on rental and just get a sert top box inseead of the virgin/ntl one saving me a bit of cash. the isp[ and phones ok so i'll keep them. I left BT a few years ago when they said I could not have a special priced internet connection cos I was a low user. This was when I was on dial up though so whether its changed I dontknow. At the mo I get enough channels with the basic package. I am not at home enough to have any extras like sport or movies. I think I need a decent playback system though. Not noticed much speed change with the isp. Though it was the same at all times and any slowness was natual cos of busy times.
DB11 Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 I'm on Orange, Wanadoo when we signed up, and I wouldn't especially recommend it. That's what we were on before Sky. Rubbish!
danny. Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 Have you tried google? http://www.google.com/tisp/ really good and works pretty much anywhere with a dead easy install.
Rincewind Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 Don't you need an internet ISP before you use Google?

Daggers Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 Virgin - but only if you buy a package so it works out cheap. It is far superior to Sky. Fact.
danny. Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 Don't you need an internet ISP before you use Google? take it you didn't click the link? :-/
Nationwider Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 It just depends where you are, your proximity to the local exchange or whether you're in a cabled area. If you've got cable, go with NTL/Virgin for convenience, but prepare yourself for inexplicable billing mayhem. The fastest connection I've ever had is with Sky, but then their customer service employees tend to be a little hard of understanding at times.
Daggers Posted 22 January 2008 Posted 22 January 2008 Move to Hull If the BBC have to apologise for some of their phone competitions then you really ought to have to apologise for shitty advice like that. For shame.
AoWW Posted 31 May 2008 Posted 31 May 2008 Just bumping this thread to see what people would now recommend? I'm currently (well, I would be if it was working ) with Tiscali but in the early hours of Sat morning they suspended my account. 7 phone calls later they admitted that it was an 'administrative error' on their part, but that it would still take up to 7 days to restore my connection. I am not a happy bunny. Their customer service has been the worst I've ever experienced (repeatedly not calling me back when they say they will - then being arsey when I call them!) and they don't seem to think that what's happened is any big deal - I beg to differ. Anyways, went out today and got a Vodafone contract for one of those mobile broadband USB-thingys. Works very well but my usage is too high to have this as a permanent solution - though it'll be useful to have if I'm out and about. I do really need a 'decent' broadband ISP. So, any recommendations? (I'm with BT for my landline and have Sky TV, if it makes a difference.) Far too pissed off with Tiscali to stay with them.... will tell them where to stick it on a point of principle.
