Thracian Posted 9 March 2008 Posted 9 March 2008 The fact there are so many different choices of favourite only strengthens the view that we have no-one who you could describe as consistently dangerous or outstanding. In the past there was always certain individuals who stood out. Davie Gibson, Banks, Shilton, Derek Hogg, Frank Worthington, Lenny Glover, Keith Weller, Derek Dougan, Graham Cross, Emile Heskey and so many more. Now we have no-one who really causes a bit of buzz and that is a major shortcoming. Not only ability wise but character wise because, while our team is functionally quite eficient now, there is no devil, no mischief. No-one with star quality that opponents have to be wary of. For me our most consistent player right now is Richard Stearman and he has been for some weeks. When people like Oakley and Howard were looking laboured and Hume/Utuhu had gone off, Stearman was still driving through into the opposition box even though dead on his legs. But you'd hardly call Stearman a natural star. The nearest thing to "buzz" footballers we've had this season are Shush, simply for his dead ballk kicks, DJ for his impishness and very occasionally Fryatt. Gradel would have been the same I imagine but none of those four deserve being even mentioned in the company of the illustrious names above. All are bit part players by comparison. Yet we'll get nowhere without some stars and some characters. Dogged professionalism is all very well but it doesn't generally win things on its own.
Monk Posted 9 March 2008 Posted 9 March 2008 Ricky "the machine, he will tear you to shreds" Sappleton Davie Gibson I preferred Colin 'Lovejoy' Gibson myself
Zingari Posted 10 March 2008 Posted 10 March 2008 kisnorbo and hume, but i doubt if either will make my all time top 50
